Wild police video: Cops ram car driven by female armed robbery suspect — who actually tries to run away after freeway crash

In a wild police video out of Georgia last week, cops are seen ramming a car that was driven by a female armed robbery suspect — and she actually tried to run away after the jaw-dropping crash on an interstate.

Atlanta police said the department's Auto Crimes Enforcement Unit on Wednesday assisted the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office in locating a vehicle and an armed robbery suspect accused of stealing an elderly woman's cell phone.

The suspect quickly gets out of the vehicle and makes a run for it, hopping over the freeway divider.

Atlanta police said officers found the vehicle and the suspect. Video shows them catching up to the suspect in a car wash:

And an officer is even seen drawing his gun as police tell her "hands up!" and "don't drive away!"

But the suspect backed out of the car wash bay and fled from police, after which a pursuit ensued.

WAGA-TV said the pursuit continued on Interstate 285. Atlanta police said officers utilized a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit. Indeed, video shows a patrol vehicle hitting the left bumper of the suspect's car, which spins out and travels backward along the left shoulder and freeway divider until it comes to a stop.

Police said the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was the arresting agency and charged Johnson with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, theft by receiving stolen property, and fleeing or attempting to elude police. She also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or first-offender probationer.

Blaze News original: 10 times retail workers ended violent threats with absolute finality

Readers of Blaze News won't soon forget the headline-grabbing plight of Jose Alba, a 61-year-old worker at a Harlem deli who fatally stabbed a much younger male who was physically attacking him inside the business on July 1, 2022.

A female tried to use a benefits card to buy potato chips for her 10-year-old daughter around 11 p.m. at the Bluemoon Convenient Store on Broadway near West 139th Street, the New York Daily News reported. The transaction was declined, the Daily News said, citing the criminal complaint. Amid an argument, prosecutors said Alba reached over the counter, grabbed the girl’s hand, and yanked the chips away, the paper reported.

'The restaurant worker was struck [and] hit the ground. ... As he was coming back up, he drew his own legally-owned firearm and fired three shots.'

Alba's boss — deli owner Maad Ahmad — told the Daily News the mom became enraged: “The lady threw everything from the counter and the [benefits card reader] machine, too. She said, ‘I’m going to get my man, and he’s going to get you.’”

The mother then came back inside the deli with Austin Simon, who got behind the store's counter to confront Alba, the paper said. Security video shows Simon physically attacking Alba — after which Alba grabs a knife that appears to have been stashed behind the counter and starts fighting back, stabbing Simon at least five times in the neck and chest, the Daily News said.

Simon was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, WNBC-TV reported. Simon was 35 years old, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

Alba was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge, the Daily News said. He also was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, police told WNBC. Alba soon ended up at the notorious Rikers Island prison.

But the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg was intensely criticized for charging Alba with murder and sending him to Rikers — as well as the $250,000 bail Alba would have to raise to get out. One of Alba's defenders was Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who called Alba "innocent."

Soon, Alba was released on a reduced $50,000 bail and maintained he was defending himself against Simon. Pressure mounted daily against Bragg's office to drop charges against Alba. Finally, the DA's office said “a homicide case against Alba could not be proven at trial beyond a reasonable doubt" as part of a motion to dismiss the case, the New York Times reported, adding that the case won't be presented to a grand jury.

The following are nine other times when store employees made thugs pay the ultimate price for physically attacking, threatening, and trying to rob them.

Dollar General clerk fatally shoots armed robber in self-defense — but robber's siblings are outraged: 'Yes, he's robbing them. Oh, well! Call the police ... You're not supposed to take matters into your own hands!'

Roosevelt Rappley, 23, entered a Dollar General store in Dayton, Ohio, around 6:20 p.m. Oct. 2, 2019, and pulled a firearm, pointed it at several individuals in the store, and demanded money from the clerk, WHIO-TV reported. An employee pulled a gun and shot Rappley in the chest, after which Rappley left the store and collapsed outside, where he died.

Rappley's siblings told WHIO it was "wrong" that the employee shot their brother. "He's got some responsibility, but not all," Rappley's sister told the station, adding that it "was wrong for that clerk to shoot my brother in the chest."

She continued, "Yes, he's robbing them. Oh, well! Call the police, that's what you're supposed to do. You're not supposed to take matters into your own hands!"

The employee said on a 911 call that the shooting was in self-defense: "I just had somebody try to attempt and rob me over here at Dollar General on Gettysburg. Came in with a firearm, threatened to take money out the drawer, pointed a gun at me and my staff members. He pointed a gun at me, I had a firearm on me, I pulled my firearm, and I shot him in self-defense."

Charges weren't expected against the employee who shot Rappley.

Masked, hooded crook demanding cash pistol-whips restaurant employee. But knocked-down worker turns the tables, pulls his own gun, and shoots suspect dead.

Police in Warner Robins, Georgia — which is about a half-hour south of Macon — said a man wearing a mask and a hood and armed with a gun entered the American Philly N Wings on Watson Boulevard around 9:45 p.m. Dec. 5, 2022.

The gunman — identified as 23-year-old Joshua Hickey — jumped the counter demanding money and pistol-whipped a male employee amid a struggle for the gun, police told WMAZ-TV.

"The restaurant worker was struck [and] hit the ground," police Sgt. Justin Clark noted to the station. "As he was coming back up, he drew his own legally-owned firearm and fired three shots at Mr. Hickey. Mr. Hickey was struck twice and fled on foot."

Officers found Hickey on Vernon Drive and took him to a hospital, where he died, the station said. Police concluded that the restaurant employee was acting in self-defense, WMAZ said.

Knife-wielding Harlem fishmonger 'was like a machine' when he stabbed 2 brothers — 1 fatally — who were physically attacking co-workers in seafood market

The New York Post reported that Junior Aquino Hernandez, 34 — a father of four with no criminal priors — was working at the Fish Express Fish Market in Harlem on the night of Feb. 21, 2023, when an individual came in and attempted to steal some product.

Pedro Laza, a 60-year-old witness, told the Post that Robert Burrell, 29, "tried to stick a lobster down his pants." A police source told the Post that the alleged thief punched an employee then fled the store only to return with his brother four minutes later.

When Burrell and his 25-year-old brother Malik returned, they reportedly went straight to the employee-only area behind the counter, where a fight broke out between the brothers and the fishmongers.

During the melee, Francisco Morales — a worker at the market — had his teeth knocked out, reported the Daily Mail.

Hernandez's tried to break up the fight but was interrupted when Robert Burrell threw a chair at another cook, the DA's office said.

Prosecutors alleged that Hernandez grabbed a fish knife and rushed to defend his coworker, ultimately stabbing both brothers, first Malik and then Robert, who dragged his wounded brother out the door. "Nobody stopped him stabbing," said Laza. "He was like a machine."

Both brothers were rushed to Harlem Hospital, where Malik Burrell died; Robert Burrell survived with a punctured lung and other injuries.

Zaimar Eusebio, the mother of Robert Burrell's daughter, remarked after seeing the body of the deceased, "His whole stomach was out." The father of the Burrell brothers told the Post, "My sons were good kids, they ain't get in no trouble, they not no hard criminals. ... I'm crushed, man, I'm hurt. I can't believe my boy was killed over some shrimps. They killed my baby on his birthday."

Hernandez initially was charged with murder, assault, and weapons possession.

But Manuel Perez, the manger of the establishment, said the Burrell brothers "broke the door and started hitting one of the employees that took the shrimp from them. They broke his face, his mouth, he was in really bad shape." Perez added that only when the "fight got really bad did Hernandez intervene with the knife."

Robert Burrell — who was charged in 2019 with felony assault — was charged in the February 2023 incident with robbery, burglary, and assault, the NYPD said.

In an about-face, however, the DA soon dropped the murder charge against Hernandez and released him from custody, stating that "we are not prepared to go forward with the charges related to the death of Malik pending a full investigation" but "we are, however, filing charges with regard to the incident at the door for the stabbing of Robert Burrell."

A high-ranking police source told WCBS-TV that surveillance video will inform prosecutors on how to proceed, noting that if Hernandez is seen "fighting them off with a knife, that's one thing. If he's charging at them with the knife, that's something else entirely."

Armed crook tries to rob Seattle smoke shop, opens fire at co-owner. But wounded victim is armed, too — and blows crook away.

Seattle police said a 30-year-old male entered King Smoke Shop at 7758 15th Ave. NW just after 4 p.m. Feb. 20, 2023, and tried to rob the store, KING-TV reported. The station said the suspect shot at the employee, who returned fire.

Responding police attempted life-saving measures on the suspect, who died at the scene, KING reported, adding that officers discovered the shop's co-owner also was shot.

Community members made tourniquets out of belts for the co-owner while waiting for medics to arrive, KING said, adding that the 38-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

A man who preferred to remain anonymous told the station he was in his car when he saw the suspect fall to the ground.

"I was at that red light, making a right turn, and the individual, as you can see where the police [are] standing right now, that's where he fell," the man told the station. "So literally like feet away from me."

The man added to KING that "the guy came stumbling out with a gun in his left hand, and he fell face-first onto the sidewalk, or into the parking lot right here. And as he fell, the gun left his hand." He added to the station that he called 911, and police were on the scene in a matter of minutes.

Would-be robber attempts stickup of Chicago auto parts store, but the manager of the business shoots him dead instead, police say

An apparent good guy with a gun turned the tables on an armed robber at a Chicago auto parts store on April 1, 2023.

The would-be robber between 30 and 40 years old entered the O'Reilly Auto Parts store in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, flashed a firearm, and demanded the manager hand over money from the store's cash register, according to the Chicago Police Department.

But the store manager, who police said is a valid Firearm Owner's Identification cardholder, shot the would-be robber instead.

Police said the suspect was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. Police had not identified him at the time of the report. While they were investigating the shooting, no charges had been filed against the store owner, who seemingly acted in self-defense.

Masked, hooded crook actually tries to steal gun from gun store while armed with hammer, cops say. But gun store owner (of course) wields much deadlier weapon.

A masked, hooded male tried to steal a gun from a gun store in Livermore, California, on Oct. 22, 2023 — and did so while armed with a hammer, police said.

As you might imagine, the gun store owner had a much deadlier weapon at his disposal and fatally shot the would-be robber, police said.

Police said their investigation revealed that a 28-year-old male from Redwood City entered East Bay Firearms in the 4000 block of First Street around 2:30 p.m. wearing a mask, gloves, and a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head while "acting suspicious." The male then tried to rob the gun store by taking a firearm while armed with a hammer, police said, citing witness statements.

Police said the gun store owner fired two rounds, fatally wounding the main. Police said they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived at the scene, and they, along with paramedics, performed lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the gun store owner was cooperating with the investigation, was not a suspect in a crime at the time, and that it appears the incident was a case of self-defense.

Would-be robber tries to hold up Dollar General in Philadelphia with what later turns out to be a toy gun. Unwise move, as the store manager has a real gun and promptly puts down the threat.

A 36-year-old male barged into the Dollar General at 9th Street and Girard Avenue in Philadelphia around 8:30 p.m. March 24, 2022, demanding a cashier empty her register, WPVI-TV reported.

The threatened cashier alerted her 45-year-old manager, who reportedly tried to talk to the suspect and reason with him — but the manager's de-escalation attempts weren't enough.

"The manager came over, attempted to talk to him. The suspect then said again, 'I have a gun, give me all your money,'" Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace told reporters.

Police said the suspect then brandished what appeared to be a handgun wrapped in plastic. That's when the manager, who's licensed to carry a firearm, allegedly shot the suspect twice, striking him at least once in the head. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate the suspect, but he died at the scene.

WCAU-TV later reported that the suspect actually was carrying a toy gun that he had wrapped in plastic to make it look like a real gun. Police said the store manager acted quickly to put down the threat. He wasn't expected to face any charges.

Manager of Dollar General in Texas fatally shoots would-be robber who brandished what turned out to be an airsoft gun, police say

A 30-year-old suspect walked into the Dollar General in the 15000 block of Ella Boulevard in Houston on Dec. 20, 2023, and threatened to shoot an employee while demanding that he open the store's safe. That employee told the male suspect that he didn't know the safe's code and promptly called the store manager.

But the manager came out with his own gun and allegedly shot the suspect twice.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the suspect got into a gold-colored Jaguar and fled the scene only to crash into a metro bus only about 50 yards from the store. The suspect passed out in the car after the crash, was transported to a hospital in critical condition, and was pronounced dead later.

“It appears he had been bleeding out based on some of the evidence we're seeing inside the vehicle and collided with a METRO bus that was here and eventually came to a stop,” Gonzalez explained.

Five passengers departed the bus and left the scene before police arrived, and the driver was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

Gonzalez added that the suspect was armed with an airsoft gun, which employs springs and compressed air for firing nonlethal plastic pellets.

“But again, they look very realistic, and at the time when somebody's facing that at gunpoint, they don't know what kind of pistol it is," he also said, adding that police believed the suspect's Jaguar was involved in another incident days before the shooting.

KPRC-TV reported that a grand jury will decide if the manager should face any charges over the lethal shooting. You can view a video report here about the incident.

Texas store owner guns down two thugs who physically attacked, tried to rob him in botched 'jugging' incident, police say

Houston police believe two suspects killed outside of a family-owned convenience store were trying to rob the owner in a "jugging" incident on Aug. 16, 2023.

The owner of Ruiz Cash & Carry in the city's East End went to the bank and came back to the business. Suddenly he was hit in the back of the head with a blunt object, and he turned to see masked men wearing gloves attacking him. He fired his gun at them, and a store employee who heard the commotion also fired at the suspects.

Both of the suspects died at the scene, while a third suspect was caught on video driving away from in a newer model black Lincoln Navigator with Texas license plate RTS-3919.

Police said there has been a rise in "jugging" incidents, in which robbery suspects identify victims at ATMs or banks and follow them in order to eventually rob them.

The daughter of one of the store's employees spoke to KHOU-TV and said it was not the first time robbers targeted the store.

“It scares us just because a situation like that had already happened here," Jacqueline Hernandez said.

You can view a video report here about the incident.

'Punk didn’t even have a clip in the gun': Man turns the tables on attackers, grabbing gun away and pistol-whipping them

An Ohio armed robbery victim turned the tables on his attackers last month, grabbing a gun away and then pistol-whipping them before police arrived, Cleveland.com reported.

Accused gunman Velonte Barnes, 25, of Cleveland Heights approached a 29-year-old shopper a BP convenience store on Monticello Boulevard in South Euclid on the afternoon of July 6, police told the outlet.

Police said the trio began wrestling on the floor, and the victim grabbed the gun from Barnes and used it to pistol-whip both attackers, the outlet noted.

At the beverage cooler, Barnes stuck a gun on the man’s stomach, grabbed the victim’s keys from his pocket, and headed toward the store entrance, Cleveland.com said, citing a police report.

But police said the victim followed Barnes and tried to rip the gun from his hands, the outlet reported, which resulted in a brawl caught on camera.

Police said a second suspect — 35-year-old Leroy Buchanan — entered the store, shoved the victim against a fountain drink dispenser while Barnes knocked the victim into a coffee machine, after which a pot of hot coffee spilled on the victim, Cleveland.com reported.

Police said the trio began wrestling on the floor, and the victim grabbed the gun from Barnes and used it to pistol-whip both attackers, the outlet noted.

Buchanan got back on his feet, chased the victim into a corner, and began punching him, Cleveland.com said, citing authorities.

With that, a third suspect — 33-year-old Sean Buchanan, Leroy's younger brother — entered the store, shoved the victim against the drink dispenser, and punched the victim's head and body, the outlet said, citing police.

In addition, Barnes picked up a glass coffee pot and slammed it against the victim’s head, shattering it, police told Cleveland.com.

Authorities said the victim dropped to the floor, and the Buchanans kept beating him, the outlet reported.

After police arrived, the victim told officers he had never seen his attackers before, Cleveland.com said, citing the police report. He added to officers that after he grabbed Barnes’ gun, he realized he couldn’t fire it because it wasn’t loaded, the outlet said.

“The punk didn’t even have a clip in the gun,” the victim added to police, Cleveland.com said, citing their report.

Police said the victim suffered injuries to his face and eyes and a coffee burn to his shoulder, the outlet noted.

Barnes failed to appear for his late-July arraignment after he also was charged with several felonies, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, Cleveland.com said.

The Buchanans of South Euclid were arrested shortly after the incident, Cleveland.com said.

Police said Leroy Buchanan received head stitches and told officers he was trying to defend his brother and himself, the outlet reported.

The Buchanans were soon arraigned on several felonies, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, Cleveland.com reported, adding that both brothers pleaded not guilty and were placed on $100,000 bonds.

Last in July, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Richard Bell put the Buchanan brothers on house arrest with monitoring devices, the outlet reported, adding that Cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer reached out to their attorneys for comment.

Barnes failed to appear for his late-July arraignment after he also was charged with several felonies, including aggravated robbery and felonious assault, Cleveland.com said. Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, the outlet added.

Secret Service agent robbed at gunpoint amid Biden's LA fundraising visit

A U.S. Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint amid President Joe Biden's fundraising visit in Los Angeles.

The agent was returning from work Saturday night when he was confronted in a residential community in Tustin, which is about an hour southeast of L.A., the Secret Service told the Associated Press.

No suspect had been found as of Monday, police told the outlet, adding that police said a silver Infiniti FX35 was spotted leaving the scene.

Tustin police said the agent's bag was stolen at gunpoint, the AP reported, adding that the agent fired his gun during the incident. The Secret Service said it doesn't know if anyone was hit by gunfire, the outlet reported, adding that the agent wasn't injured. ABC News said the agent was off duty at the time.

Police were called about the robbery shortly after 9:30 p.m., the AP said, adding that officers found some of the agent’s stolen belongings in the area.

No suspect had been found as of Monday, police told the outlet, adding that police said a silver Infiniti FX35 was spotted leaving the scene. Tustin police provided an image of the suspect's vehicle as part of a news release.

Police added that there was no known threat to the public.

How are observers reacting?

A few commenters reacting to the Tustin police department's news release on Facebook seemed disturbed and perplexed over the incident:

  • "So someone, with no description, robs a secret service agent WITH A GUN in a residential area, but there is no threat to the public??? And how does the agent take a shot at someone he can't describe? He saw the gun. He can't give the height/build at the least, or voice?" one commenter wondered.
  • "Situational awareness?" another commenter pointed out in relation to the agent's handling of the reported armed robbery, adding that "hopefully" the agent is "not on protection detail." Hopefully.

Users on X weren't happy, either:

  • "Just the people [who are] supposed to keep the president alive," one user deadpanned.
  • "Welcome to California," another user quipped. "Hope you enjoyed your visit."
  • Another commenter directed a swipe at left-wing California Gov. Gavin Newsom, saying, "Fantastic job, sir."

Video: 8 armed thugs smash Oakland jewelry store's display cases, steal nearly all items in brazen, devastating daytime heist

Eight armed individuals were caught on surveillance video smashing the display cases of an Oakland jewelry store this week and making off with almost all of the family-owned business' inventory in a brutal, devastating heist that took place in broad daylight.

KGO-TV called the crime in the city's Chinatown neighborhood "one of the most brazen, armed daytime robberies we've ever seen."

What are the details?

Surveillance video shows 69-year-old mother Diane ducking for cover and screaming for help as the robbers — wearing black masks and clothing and armed with guns and hammers — enter Phuong Jewelry around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, KGO said.

The crooks ended up smashing nearly all the display cases and ransacking the business, the station said.

With no security guard on duty, KGO said Diane's 76-year-old husband is seen on the clip coming out from the back of the store armed with a gun of his own, which apparently convinced the crooks to leave.

"If he hadn't done that, they would have kept going," their son Tony Trinh told the station, adding that the crooks stole an estimated 85-90% of the store's inventory.

"My mom was devastated, and my dad was broken," Trinh told KGO.

The station said the robbery was by far the worst Phuong Jewelry has suffered in more than 40 years of operation.

"We've been robbed a few times before but not at this level of brazen magnitude," Trinh explained to KGO. "Eight individuals and two getaway cars and guns drawn. I thought, 'Did my mother get shot? Did my father get shot? Did any of our staff or community members?'"

Bad news keeps coming

Due to the rising cost of premiums, the family let the store's business insurance lapse, the station said.

"It's rough," Trinh told KGO. "My mom is the leader of the pack. When she suffers, I suffer; the same thing from her."

Will Phuong Jewelry stay in business? Trinh replied to the station that "we would love to, but with the environment and how tough it's been, we don't know yet."

KGO reported that Diane indicated she would be back to work on Friday.

The Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council has started a GoFundMe to help the family business recoup its losses, the station said, adding that Oakland police said the investigation is ongoing, and they want those with information to come forward.

Armed crooks rob man outside his home, force him to front door. But his relative in home also has a gun and opens fire.

Three masked males robbed a man at gunpoint outside his Houston home early Sunday morning and forced him to his front door — but police said the victim's relative inside the home saw what was happening, grabbed a gun, and began firing at the suspects.

What are the details?

The victim was exiting his car around 12:30 a.m. to enter his home in the 2600 block of Caplin Street when the trio approached the man and robbed him at gunpoint, police told KPRC-TV.

Police said the suspects forced the man up to the front door of his home, KTRK-TV reported.

Police added that a family member of the victim from inside the home witnessed what was happening and came outside and shot at the suspects, KPRC said.

"Those suspects then returned fire and fled the scene," Lt. T. Trometer told KTRK. "Shortly after that, police units arrived and were able to locate one of the suspects in a nearby neighborhood. He had injuries, gunshot wounds to the legs and one to the arm."

Police added to KPRC that a K-9 unit located the wounded suspect, who was soon taken to a hospital and was set to be charged with aggravated robbery. The suspect is expected to survive, KTRK reported.

As for the other two suspects, police added to KPRC that they fled the scene in a white Ford SUV. No other information about them has been released, the station added.

KTRK also reported that it's unknown whether police know the other two suspects' whereabouts.

How are folks reacting?

Commenters reacting to KPRC's story on the robbery and shooting not surprisingly were quite happy with the relative who came to the victim's rescue — but otherwise disgusted that the robbery occurred in the first place:

  • "Whomever the person was that came out the house shooting, if they ever need a place to stay, I have an extra bedroom," one commenter wrote.
  • "Was the guy who was shot already out on bond for something else?" another commenter asked. "I’m going to guess yes."
  • "Stay vigilant folks ..." another commenter warned.

Gun-toting 17-year-old holds up Chicago restaurant, cops say. But concealed carrier on premises isn't having it.

A gun-toting male — only 17 years old — held up a Chicago restaurant Monday night, police said. But also in the establishment was a concealed-carrying man who took issue with what was happening and opened fire on the suspect.

What are the details?

Police said the teen entered the Taco Burrito King at 5413 W. Belmont Ave. off Long Avenue in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood — and at gunpoint, demanded the contents of the cash register, WBBM-TV reported.

The clerk behind the register complied with the teen's demands, but police told the station that a man with a concealed carry license was also in the Mexican restaurant — and he confronted the gun-toting teen.

Cops said the CCL holder took out a gun and shot at the teen — but missed, WBBM reported.

The teen took off from the restaurant, drove away in a black sport-utility vehicle, and promptly crashed a half a mile to the south near Diversey and Long Avenues, police told the station.

The suspect tried to flee the accident scene, but officers caught him, WBBM said, adding that they also recovered a gun.

The teen was taken to Community First Hospital with a graze wound, police added to the station. Cops initially said the teen was wounded during the armed robbery but later clarified that he was not wounded during the armed robbery, WBBM reported.

The station noted that police didn't say where they believe the teen sustained the graze gunshot wound, but they noted that he was in fair condition at the hospital Tuesday afternoon where he was being held in custody.

No one else was hurt, WBBM reported, adding that Area 5 detectives are investigating.

Canadian cops charge victim of bat attack with aggravated assault after he allegedly took bat from attacker, hit him with it

Police in a Canadian city have charged the victim of a bat attack with aggravated assault after the victim allegedly took the bat from the attacker and hit him with it several times.

What are the details?

Police in Peterborough — which is in Ontario and just shy of two hours northeast of Toronto — said they were called to a convenience store in the King Street and Bethune Street area around 2:30 a.m. Friday and found that the male clerk was helping a customer when a second male holding a baseball bat entered the store demanding money.

Police said a struggle ensued, and the clerk was struck with the bat before grabbing the bat from the suspect, who fled the store. The clerk followed the suspect out of the store and hit him with the bat several times, police said.

The suspect suffered head injuries and was in a Toronto hospital receiving treatment, police said, adding that emergency medical services treated the 22-year-old clerk at the scene.

Police said they issued an arrest warrant for the 37-year-old male suspect for robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of weapon.

However, cops also said they arrested the clerk and charged him with aggravated assault and that the clerk was was held in custody and appeared in court Saturday.

Police added that they want to talk to the male customer who was in the store at the time of the incident. Those with information can call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go online at www.stopcrimehere.ca.

'This is not about politics ... this is not about race'

It appears members of the public expressed outrage once word got out about police arresting and charging the clerk — so much so that Police Chief Stu Betts issued a rare public statement defending the decision and calling criticism "unfair."

"Yes, this case is unusual, but in a world where security cameras are everywhere, do you really think we would not have seized & reviewed the footage as part of the investigation and prior to laying charges?" Betts asked detractors. "If you follow anything in the media, you will know that I cannot speak to the particulars of this case because it is before the Court, but if you have a desire to know what has led to the charges, follow the case in Court. Allow the facts of the case to guide your commentary and opinion, not your reaction to a headline."

Betts added, "This is not about politics – politics have nothing to do with the facts. This is not about race — as some have suggested. This is not about the perception that criminals go free while victims of crime are penalized — this is about the law. I encourage you to stop and think about things before determining what you think has happened, or that an injustice has taken place, because I’m quite confident that not one person who has made a comment about this case has seen the video or has access to the actual facts."

Anything else?

Daniel Brown — a criminal lawyer and past president of the Ontario Criminal Lawyers Association — said the public may have difficulty understanding the police department's decision and that some might believe the would-be robber "had it coming," CBC News reported.

"The person that went into the store to commit the robbery had premeditated this," Brown told CBC Radio's "Metro Morning," the news network noted.

"The person who was defending themselves — there was no planning, there was no deliberation … so the courts are definitely going to treat this more leniently even if he's found guilty. There are a whole bunch of extenuating circumstances that will come into play," Brown added, according to CBC News.

Brown added that the maximum sentence for aggravated assault is 14 years in prison but that the circumstances in each case do matter when it comes to sentencing, the news network reported.

Armed home intruders pistol-whip 5-year-old girl in face — take off with a cell phone

Armed home intruders on Staten Island pistol-whipped a 5-year-old girl in the face early Monday morning — and took off from the premises with a cell phone.

What are the details?

Four suspects, three armed with guns, kicked in the front door of the home near Livingston Avenue and Queen Street around 12:45 a.m., WPIX-TV reported, citing New York City Police.

A 5-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, a 33-year-old woman, and a 54-year-old resident were inside the home at the time of the break-in, the station said, citing police.

The NYPD released a video from surveillance cameras showing the robbers — wearing hoodies and masks — entering the home and searching the residence with a flashlight, the New York Daily News reported.

The robbers demanded money and jewelry, police said, according to the Daily News, and they pistol-whipped the girl and the woman. The victims suffered facial cuts and bleeding, WPIX said, and were taken to a hospital for treatment. The boy and the 54-year-old resident were not hurt, the paper added.

The suspects stole a cell phone before fleeing the home, police told the station, and there have been no arrests.

Police are asking the public for help identifying the suspects and tracking them down, the Daily News said, adding that anyone with information can confidentially call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

How have folks been reacting?

Commenters under the New York Post's story about the incident are not happy:

  • "Wonder how many times these winners/grad students have been caught and released with no bail," one commenter said. "The child in the home did not deserve this. ..."
  • "Where was the social service worker to talk them out of this now that nothing is a crime and responsibility is a past tense?" another commenter asked.
  • "Liberal states would rather have dead innocents than armed informed citizens, only one of them is a threat to their tyranny," another commenter said.
  • "Isn't gun control great!!" another commenter exclaimed. "You take the guns away from the law abiding citizens and give them to the criminals."

Armed robbers get hilarious surprise involving their getaway car in the middle of heist: 'What a plot twist'

A trio of armed robbers received a hilarious surprise — well, not to them, at least — involving their getaway car while they were in the middle of their heist in Colorado over the weekend.

What happened?

Three armed and masked individuals allegedly robbed a check-cashing service in Commerce City Saturday morning, NBC News reported, citing the local police department.

While the news network said no injuries were reported, the crooks in question may have suffered bruised egos in regard to what went down outside.

Police said someone stole their getaway car in the middle of their armed robbery, NBC News reported.

"In an unexpected and ironic twist… as the trio was robbing the business…a fourth criminal stole their getaway vehicle… which may have already been stolen," police said in a Facebook post about the incident. "We don’t know. If we get a solid description of it, we will release that here."

Police added on the Facebook post that officers infiltrated the area and quickly chased down and arrested two of the three suspects accused of robbing Hi Lo Check Cashing in the 7200 block of Monaco just before 11 a.m.

If you were present during this crime or have any information about what occurred, police added that you can contact Detective Garcia at 303-227-7147.

How have folks been reacting?

As you might guess, commenters — and even police — have been just a tad tickled by the turn of events:

“We can’t make this stuff up,” Commerce City cops noted in a comment on their Facebook post.

Others were loving it, too:

  • "What a plot twist," another commenter said.
  • "I mean... criminals aren't generally smart," another commenter added.
  • "Apparently, one didn’t know their assignment," another commenter reasoned. "Getaway driver role… stay in car, keep car running, watch for popo AND DON’T let getaway car GET STOLEN!"
