Thug reportedly hits 25-year-old woman over the head with baseball bat in random attack on NYC street

New York City police are looking for a male who reportedly hit a 25-year-old woman over the head with a baseball bat in a random attack earlier this month.

What are the details?

Detectives told WABC-TV the male struck the woman as she walked along 7th Avenue in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea. The attack took place just after 10 p.m. Feb. 8, WCBS-TV reported.

It appears the attack was unprovoked, WABC said, adding that the woman suffered a gash on her head as well as some bruising.

The suspect was last seen wearing a black jacket, gray pants, a blue knit hat, and gray sneakers, WABC added.

How are people reacting?

A number of commenters sounded off under the New York Daily News' Facebook post about the attack:

  • "Every darn day and multiple times a day in NYC!!!" one commenter wrote.
  • "This is one of the reasons why I believe in the Second Amendment," another user declared.
  • "... They just know the elected officials are soft on crime and won’t do anything," another commenter stated. "That is why I’m changing my vote; no more for a group that does nothing but let these nuts go free."
  • "Is something in the water?????" another user wondered. "All this is not mental illness; this is a society of adults who were led to believe for every action, good or bad, there is no action."
  • "Jeez throw hot coffee on his face or karate chop that punk!!!!!!!" another commenter exclaimed.
  • "Keep voting [Democrat] tho," another user mocked. "[Former New York City Mayor] Rudy [Giuliani] kept the streets safer."
  • "That’s why I’m no longer voting Democratic," another commenter said.
  • "Capture. Convict. Execute," another user wrote.

Canadian cops charge victim of bat attack with aggravated assault after he allegedly took bat from attacker, hit him with it

Police in a Canadian city have charged the victim of a bat attack with aggravated assault after the victim allegedly took the bat from the attacker and hit him with it several times.

What are the details?

Police in Peterborough — which is in Ontario and just shy of two hours northeast of Toronto — said they were called to a convenience store in the King Street and Bethune Street area around 2:30 a.m. Friday and found that the male clerk was helping a customer when a second male holding a baseball bat entered the store demanding money.

Police said a struggle ensued, and the clerk was struck with the bat before grabbing the bat from the suspect, who fled the store. The clerk followed the suspect out of the store and hit him with the bat several times, police said.

The suspect suffered head injuries and was in a Toronto hospital receiving treatment, police said, adding that emergency medical services treated the 22-year-old clerk at the scene.

Police said they issued an arrest warrant for the 37-year-old male suspect for robbery, assault with a weapon, and possession of weapon.

However, cops also said they arrested the clerk and charged him with aggravated assault and that the clerk was was held in custody and appeared in court Saturday.

Police added that they want to talk to the male customer who was in the store at the time of the incident. Those with information can call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go online at www.stopcrimehere.ca.

'This is not about politics ... this is not about race'

It appears members of the public expressed outrage once word got out about police arresting and charging the clerk — so much so that Police Chief Stu Betts issued a rare public statement defending the decision and calling criticism "unfair."

"Yes, this case is unusual, but in a world where security cameras are everywhere, do you really think we would not have seized & reviewed the footage as part of the investigation and prior to laying charges?" Betts asked detractors. "If you follow anything in the media, you will know that I cannot speak to the particulars of this case because it is before the Court, but if you have a desire to know what has led to the charges, follow the case in Court. Allow the facts of the case to guide your commentary and opinion, not your reaction to a headline."

Betts added, "This is not about politics – politics have nothing to do with the facts. This is not about race — as some have suggested. This is not about the perception that criminals go free while victims of crime are penalized — this is about the law. I encourage you to stop and think about things before determining what you think has happened, or that an injustice has taken place, because I’m quite confident that not one person who has made a comment about this case has seen the video or has access to the actual facts."

Anything else?

Daniel Brown — a criminal lawyer and past president of the Ontario Criminal Lawyers Association — said the public may have difficulty understanding the police department's decision and that some might believe the would-be robber "had it coming," CBC News reported.

"The person that went into the store to commit the robbery had premeditated this," Brown told CBC Radio's "Metro Morning," the news network noted.

"The person who was defending themselves — there was no planning, there was no deliberation … so the courts are definitely going to treat this more leniently even if he's found guilty. There are a whole bunch of extenuating circumstances that will come into play," Brown added, according to CBC News.

Brown added that the maximum sentence for aggravated assault is 14 years in prison but that the circumstances in each case do matter when it comes to sentencing, the news network reported.

Trio of thugs reportedly attack young mother, pistol whipping her in the head then pounding her car with baseball bats — all while her two children are in the vehicle

Three men brutally attacked a young mother in Harlem on Friday evening — and in full view of her children, WABC-TV reported.

What are the details?

The New York City Police Department told TheBlaze that the 22-year-old female victim exited her vehicle in front of 1663 Park Avenue when three unknown males approached her.

Police said one of the males displayed a gun and handed it to a second male who then used it to strike the victim on the left side of her head, causing swelling and bruising.

The males then then struck the victim's vehicle multiple times with bats causing substantial damage, police said.

What's more, two children were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Police on Wednesday would not confirm to TheBlaze that the victim is the children's mother.

The victim was able to drive away to a safe location, police said, and the males "fled to parts unknown." Emergency medical personnel responded and treated the victim on scene for minor injuries, police said.

Police are asking for the public's assistance in identifying the culprits and provided images of three males they believe are connected to the assault.

WANTED for an ASSAULT: On 2/11/22 at approx. 7PM, front of 1663 Park Ave @NYPD25PCT Manhattan. The suspects approached a 22 year-old female victim as she exited her car & hit her on the side of her head with a gun. Any info call us at 800-577-TIPS Reward up to $3,500.pic.twitter.com/tmKYPKpcLB

The reported incident took place only two blocks from the NYPD's 25th Precinct located at 120 E. 119th Street.

The motive for the attack remained unclear Wednesday morning, according to the New York Post. A reward of up to $3,500 is being offered.

Anything else?

News of the attack comes as authorities already are dealing with other brutal assaults in the city.

Police recently arrested a 25-year-old repeat offender said to have stabbed a Manhattan woman more than 40 times with her own kitchen knife.

In fact Friday night's alleged attack took place just blocks from where police reportedly opened fire on a vehicle Tuesday during a traffic stop after the driver attempted to ram two officers, Fox News said.

The Post, citing NYPD statistics released last week, reported that major crimes in Harlem’s five police precincts are up 29.5% this year compared to the same period last year.

Man under investigation for fatal shooting of Patriot Prayer supporter brought bat-wielding daughter to Black Lives Matter protest night before killing

The man under investigation for the fatal shooting of a Patriot Prayer supporter in Portland over the weekend brought his bat-wielding daughter to a Black Lives Matter protest the night before the killing, the Oregonian reported.

What are the details?

Photos by an Oregonian/OregonLive photographer caught Michael Reinoehl, 48, with his daughter — who was carrying a baseball bat — at the Friday protest outside Mayor Ted Wheeler's residence, the paper said.

The Oregonian said Reinoehl was dressed in the same light-colored vest that videos and photos show him wearing at the scene of the deadly shooting.

More from the paper:

Sources familiar with the case but not authorized to speak said police are investigating Reinoehl in connection with the death of Aaron "Jay" Danielson, a supporter of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer. Danielson was shot in the chest and died soon after most cars in a caravan of backers of President Donald Trump drove through downtown and left.

A family member also identified Reinoehl as a man captured in photos and video leaving the shooting scene.

Police have made no arrests in the shooting.

At Friday's BLM protest, one participant told the Oregonian that he noticed Reinoehl, who was not wearing a mask, arrive with his daughter. The girl was carrying a baseball bat, the paper said, citing photos. The pair walked through the event and then left, the Oregonian said, adding that some people followed, photographing him as he left the area.

'I am 100% ANTIFA all the way!'

Reinoehl also has shared Instagram messages in support of Black Lives Matter, including a June post in which he described himself as a member of Antifa fighting in a "war" where "there will be casualties."

"Every Revolution needs people that are willing and ready to fight," Reinoehl wrote. "There are so many of us protesters that are just protesting without a clue of where that will lead. That's just the beginning that's where the fight starts. If that's as far as you can take it thank you for your participation but please stand aside and support the ones that are willing to fight. I am 100% ANTIFA all the way! I am willing to fight for my brothers and sisters!"

"It will be a war and like all wars there will be casualties," he added.

More from the Oregonian:

He's wanted on a failure to appear warrant stemming from a June 8 Baker County arrest in a speed racing case that involved his 17-year-old son in eastern Oregon. Reinoehl faces allegations including driving under the influence of a controlled substance, recklessly endangering another, unlawful possession of a gun and driving while suspended and uninsured. His daughter, then 11, was with him in his speeding Cadillac at the time, state police reported.

He said in a Bloomberg news video interview this summer that he has provided security for other protesters. The video, posted online July 27, showed Reinoehl standing across the street from the Justice Center, and his daughter stepping out of a car parked nearby. "I have my daughter here with me because I'm trying to give her an education," he said on the video.
