How Christianity makes men better
Does rejecting biblical masculinity turn men from protectors to predators?
Nancy Pearcey, author of "Love thy Body" and "The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes," believes it does.
“There’s no other religion where the god practices servant leadership” like in Christianity, Pearcey tells Allie Beth Stuckey.
“Virtues like love and gentleness and compassion became masculine virtues,” she adds.
While the term “toxic masculinity” has been used by the Left to represent men who believe in the Bible — Pearcey and Stuckey both believe it couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Stuckey mentions that Paul wrote something in Ephesians 5 like “wives submit to your husbands, but also husbands you better be ready to lay down your life for your wife.” She also references 1 Corinthians, saying “the wife’s body doesn’t belong to her. It belongs to her husband, but husband — your body also belongs to your wife.”
Stuckey believes this showcased “a radical equality of dignity, equality of worth, and a mutual submission.”
“True followers of Christ have been trying to champion the dignity of both men and women for a very long time. Really, since our inception,” she adds.
Pearcey agrees, noting that putting Christianity in a historical context really helps others to appreciate it.
“The Greco-Roman world had a very low view of women. You know, wives were for having legal heirs and that’s about it. It was totally accepted for men to have sex with just about anyone else, you know, with courtesans and mistresses and prostitutes and other men — by the way, homosexuality was also widely accepted — and slaves. The most frequent form of adultery was with a man’s slaves — male and female, adult and children,” she adds.
“So, yes,” Pearcey continues, “when Christianity showed up in the ancient world, it was dramatically revolutionary.”
