Morgan Freeman declares Black History Month and the term 'African-American' to be an 'insult' in rare interview

Legendary actor Morgan Freeman explained how Black History Month and the term "African-American" are insults to black people in a rare interview.

During an interview with The Times in London, Freeman expounded on his views about race.

"Two things I can say publicly that I do not like, Black History Month is an insult," Freeman declared. "You're going to relegate my history to a month?"

The "Shawshank Redemption" actor added that the term "African-American" is an "insult."

"I don’t subscribe to that title," he said. "Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word, and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses 'African-American.' What does it really mean?"

He said black people come from a variety of countries across the world and not just the continent of Africa. He reasoned that Irish-Americans and Italian-Americans are not called Euro-Americans.

Speaking of current society, "Generationally, though, I do think we’re moving ahead in leaps and bounds."

"The change is that all people are involved now," Freeman stated. "Everyone. LGBTQ, Asians, black, white, interracial marriages, interracial relationships. All represented. You see them all on screen now and that is a huge jump."

Morgan made similar comments about Black History Month in a classic "60 Minutes" interview from 2005.

Host Mike Wallace asked Freeman about his thoughts on Black History Month.

Freeman quickly shot back, "Ridiculous."

The 85-year-old Hollywood actor questioned, "You`re going to relegate my history to a month?"

Freeman queried why there isn't a White History Month or a Jewish History Month, then asked Wallace if he wanted those as special months. Wallace replied, "No, no."

Freeman rebutted, "I don't either. I don't want a Black History Month. Black history is American history."

Wallace then said, " How are we going to get rid of racism until...?"

A frustrated Freeman fired back, "Stop talking about it."

"I'm going to stop calling you a white man. And I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," he explained. "I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman. You're not going to say, 'I know this white guy named Mike Wallace.' Hear what I'm saying?"

Freeman has not been shy to discuss race, and is willing to give his honest opinion on the hot-button topic.

Freeman silenced CNN anchor Don Lemon regarding a question about race in 2014.

Lemon asked Freeman, "Do you think that race plays a part in wealth distribution today?"

Freeman fired back, "No, I don’t. You and I, we’re proof. Why

“Why would race have anything to do with it? Put your mind to what you want to do and go for that," Freeman advised. "It’s kind of like religion to me, it's a good excuse for not getting there."

Lemon claimed that he was "tired" of having to talk about race every day "because it’s in the news cycle."

Freeman replied, "If you talk about it, it exists."

He added, "But making it a bigger issue than it needs to be is the problem here."

'Before white people came to this land, there were no jails, no homelessness,' self-described 'Writer & Reporter' declares

Self-described "Writer & Reporter" Simon Moya-Smith, who indicates that he is "Oglala & Chicano," declared in a tweet that prior to the arrival of white people, homelessness was not a problem and there were not any laws against homosexuality and abortion.

"Before white people came to this land, there were no jails, no homelessness, no laws against homosexuality or abortion. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples emphasized health, housing, freedom to love who you love and the fact that we need Mother Earth. She doesn't need us," Moya-Smith wrote.

An account responded to the post by writing, "Yea they just scalped people and burned them alive."

"So, here's the myth re: scalping: white men scalped Natives after a massacre & took them as trophies back to Europe. White, balding men had little to nothing to scalp. But Natives presumed that’s how white men celebrated a victory. So Natives scalped them back to send a message," Moya-Smith tweeted in response.

He acknowledged that Native Americans also battled each other other.

"Natives fought each other, no argument. But the Lakota did not try to convert the Cherokee to Lakota. The Cherokee did not try to monopolize corn," he tweeted. "But you are right about one thing: we scalped the white man right back."

\u201c@Dulcelibertyy This is literally an argument my elders answered in the \u201870s. Natives fought each other, no argument. But the Lakota did not try to convert the Cherokee to Lakota. Moya-Smith has asserted that regardless of where someone lives on the continent of North America, they are residing "on stolen Native land."

He has objected to the description of the U.S. as "a land of immigrants," tweeting, "Wrong. Don't put a period there… The U.S. is a land of immigrants AND peoples who were brought here against their will and the Indigenous peoples who've been here since time immemorial. #BlackHistoryMonth"

US diplomat raises eyebrows by asking whether Afghans know about '#BlackGirlMagic and the movement it inspired'

A U.S. diplomat raised eyebrows by publicly asking whether Afghans are acquainted with "#BlackGirlMagic and the movement it inspired" and whether women and girls in that nation "need a similar movement."

"Are Afghans familiar with #BlackGirlMagic and the movement it inspired? Do Afghan girls need a similar movement? What about Afghan Women? Teach me, ready to learn," tweeted Karen Decker, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Mission to Afghanistan.

Decker included the hashtag "#BlackHistoryMonth" and tagged Beyoncé, Lizzo, and Regina King in the post.

The U.S. pulled out of Afghanistan in 2021, leaving that country under the control of the Taliban, which oppresses women and girls.

"I'm not the same person anymore," Noura, a 20-year-old Afghan woman, said, according to the Associated Press. "Since the Taliban came, I feel like I'm dead." She had previously played sports, but the Taliban has banned women and girls from athletics, according to the outlet. Females have also been banned from college, high school, and middle school, according to the AP.

Lawmakers and others commented on the American diplomat's peculiar "#BlackGirlMagic" post.

"This is unfortunately not a parody account," GOP Rep. Dan Bishop of North Carlolina tweeted.

"We are ruled by unserious people," Republican Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance wrote.

"What an embarrassment. And a perfect example of the Biden Administration prioritizing wokeness over competence," GOP Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas tweeted.

"And they said the adults were back in charge..." GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas tweeted.

"Every time an American diplomat tweets, I become 25% more isolationist," conservative commentator Michael Knowles tweeted.

"In case Americans need any more examples of why Biden foreign policy is failing so miserably around the world," former Nevada attorney general Adam Paul Laxalt wrote.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that to his understanding, Decker drafted the tweet but that the messaging had not been cleared by the department in Washington. Price described the messaging as "inappropriate" as well as "ineffective"

Woke school district promotes upcoming BLM flag-hoisting event

San Diego Unified School District posted on social media to promote an upcoming Black Lives Matter flag-hoisting event.

"In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, San Diego Unified students from across the district will raise the Black Lives Matter flag to signify our shared commitment to creating a just, equitable, and empathetic world," the district tweeted.

A graphic included in the tweet indicates that the February 1 event is open to students, families, staff, and members of the community.

The district has flown the BLM flag in the past as well, and it has also hoisted other controversial flags, including pride and transgender flags.

"This morning, the district raised the Black Lives Matter flag, along with the Pride and Trans flags, at the Eugene Brucker Education Center," the district tweeted in June 2020.

BLM is both pro-choice and pro-LGBT.

"Black liberation movements in this country have created room, space, and leadership mostly for Black heterosexual, cisgender men — leaving women, queer and transgender people, and others either out of the movement or in the background to move the work forward with little or no recognition. As a network, we have always recognized the need to center the leadership of women and queer and trans people," the group's website states.

In a statement responding to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year, BLM declared that the ruling was "one of several this week designed to limit freedom in service of a white supremacist and patriarchal agenda." BLM also claimed that "full access to abortion care is necessary for all Black people."

BLM recently tweeted, "Police represent the interest of capitalism and advance white supremacy at any and all costs."
