One dead, several victims 'mangled,' after man drove SUV into Boston area Apple store, pinning bodies against inside wall

A male driver sped into an Apple store in the Boston area on Monday morning, killing one and injuring at least 17 people.

What are the details?

911 calls began to pour in from the neighboring Derby Street shops around 10:45 a.m., after a man drove a black SUV through the front plate-glass window of an Apple store in the Boston suburb of Hingham, reported the Independent.

The driver struck multiple people inside the establishment.

The Hanover Fire Department indicated shortly after the incident that multiple people were "injured/trapped."

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz suggested that some victims had been pinned to the inside wall of the store.

Firefighters appeared to have helped someone trapped under the vehicle inside the store.

Some bystanders reportedly leapt into action to provide aid to those injured both inside and outside the store right after the incident.

One male victim has been confirmed dead.

A statement issued by Apple suggested that the deceased may have been a "professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the store."

WCVB reported that victims have been transported to various hospitals in the area.

South Shore Health is presently treating 17 victims for various injuries, including head trauma and "mangled" limbs. The hospital's chief of trauma, Dr. Christopher Burns, indicated that multiple patients have life-threatening injuries, meaning the death count may soon rise.

Cruz said that the driver was being interviewed by police and that a criminal investigation is underway, suggestive that this may have been an intentional attack.

One witness claimed that while the driver appeared to have been injured in the crash, the man had nevertheless been alert.

The district attorney said, "this morning was an unthinkable morning, and people are trying to get through it and process what happened."

Alarming images are presently circulating revealing a gaping hole in the front window of the Apple store. Shattered glass and what appears to be blood stains can also be seen on the ground near the entry point.

One witness who was nearby the store at the moment of impact told NBC10 that "all of a sudden we hear this, I don't want to say explosion but a bang, a very loud bang. So we jumped up from the table and we looked out the window and we could see the hole in the Apple Store."

Police began attempting to remove the SUV lodged inside the building around 3 p.m. Footage shows HPD preparing the break more glass to retrieve the vehicle:

Hingham fire chief Steve Murphy said that the building commissioner and the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team have indicated that the structural integrity of the building has not been compromised.

State Senator Patrick O’Connor (R) tweeted, "My thoughts are with those who have been injured and impacted by the incident at the Hingham Derby Street Shops this morning. Sadly, there are reports of at least one individual having passed due to injuries on the scene and my prayers are with their family."

'At wits' end': Portland sees exodus of families, chased out by city's growing homeless camps

“Every day if you go from one end of the street to the other, you’re confronting some very difficult situations, people in really dire straits," Portland resident Mark Smith told KGW8. Smith and his partner no longer feel safe walking alone or gardening in their neighborhood in North Portland, Oregon. After all, a homeless camp wherein 50 people live now straddles their back yard.

As of a January 26 head count released in a May report, Portland had 6,633 homeless persons, up considerably from 2017, which saw 4,177 homeless. Only 2,222 of those counted in 2022 were in shelters.

Although many had made camp outside businesses, these camps are no longer a problem limited to the downtown core, where the alleys are lined with garbage and used drug needles and homeless addicts openly traffic and buy heroin, meth, and fentanyl. Encampments now encroach on residential areas.

Families are beginning to flee McKenna Avenue, for instance, citing the homeless camps as cause. For-sale signs are becoming more and more common.

Real estate broker Lauren Iaquinta suggested that she has seen a great deal of migration to the suburbs over the past two years. "Most people don't want to have to worry about if they can leave their car parked in their driveway overnight without maybe having it broken into."

Iaquinta explained to KGW8 that it's "neighborhood by neighborhood. You can be driving through North Portland and you're in this lovely area where there's no issues, and then you can make a turn around the corner and have homeless camps there. It's kind of sad."

Although the city periodically tears down encampments, the problem nevertheless persists.

\u201cNE 33RD & MARINE DRIVE | In 65 seconds, this is what you see when driving along Northeast 33rd Drive between the National Guard office and Northeast Sutherland Avenue - and this is only one side of the street. \n\n@KGWNews\u201d

Tom Karwaki, secretary of the University Park Neighborhood Association, said last week that the city's camp cleanups are merely a temporary solution. "They can just come back. In the past they've cleaned it up and usually within a week to two weeks there's people back there."

Between July 11 and July 17, the city's Impact Reduction Program received 1,650 new campsite reports, observed 340 active campsites, and assessed approximately 668 campsites, some containing biohazardous materials.

One homeowner told reporter Angela Hart that "Portland makes it really easy to be homeless. ... There's always somebody giving away free tents, sleeping bags, clothes, water, sandwiches, three meals a day — it's all here."

When asked by KGW8 about their reasons for living in one homeless encampment that was torn down last week, two respondents suggested it's about drugs. "It's largely due to my drug use," said an individual referred to as Girtz.

Oregon decriminalized most hard drugs in 2020, including heroin and meth. Overdoses increased by 41% the following year, hitting an all-time high.

This week, Karwaki told reporters, "The community is at its wits' end. ... No one feels safe."

Safety is a growing concern, especially since Portland is presently closing in on last year's record murder rate. Not including officer-involved shootings or suicides, as of August 17, there have been 58 homicides in Portland.

In February, the director of the U.S. Geologic Survey Oregon, Dan Crammond, noted how the homeless camps had gone from "sad realities" to "intolerable conditions." Crammond didn't blame the homeless, however, but rather the City of Portland.

Portland's Democrat Mayor Ted Wheeler has deflected blame, demanding more state and federal investment. "We are not appropriately scaled to the size and scope of the problem."

Wheeler banned the kind of homeless encampments now seen growing in residential areas from appearing near highways and other high-traffic areas in February.

Violence erupts in American cities on anniversary of Breonna Taylor's death

There were several protests in American cities on Saturday, which was the one-year anniversary of Breonna Taylor's death. Some of the peaceful protests escalated into unrest and violence.

In Louisville, crowds gathered to call for justice for Taylor, who was shot and killed by a Louisville Metro Police Department officer when a raid turned deadly after her boyfriend Kenneth Walker exchanged gunfire in the early hours of March 13, 2020. The LMPD declared an unlawful assembly after protesters were "blocking the roadway and forcing vehicles, while armed, to turn around."

While the protests in Louisville were peaceful, the same can not be said for Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles.

President Joe Biden tweeted about the Breonna Taylor death on Saturday.

"Breonna Taylor's death was a tragedy, a blow to her family, her community, and America," Biden wrote. "As we continue to mourn her, we must press ahead to pass meaningful police reform in Congress. I remain committed to signing a landmark reform bill into law."

Biden called Antifa an "idea" during the 2020 presidential debate in September.

Far-left actor Mark Ruffalo tweets, 'Unless you are Native American you are an immigrant in this country. FULL STOP.' And the backlash is severe.

Far-left activist actor Mark Ruffalo — who ripped Ellen DeGeneres' call for "kindness" over her photo with former President George W. Bush and said his mother's illegal abortion helped shape his pro-choice views — was feeling that ol' virtue-signaling spirit again during the presidential debate Thursday.

What happened?

Seems Ruffalo was put off by a back-and-forth about illegal immigration and felt the need to educate all of us on the topic. Red State said the actor's since-deleted Twitter post read, "Unless you are Native American you are an immigrant in this country. FULL STOP. We all came from somewhere else. We are living on their ancestral land. We all came from somewhere else."

Oh boy.

As you might guess, Ruffalo's misguided declaration set off more than a few people:

  • "African Americans are not immigrants," one commenter wrote. "We were enslaved and dragged here. Slavery is not immigration. You're too grown, and we're too far into 2020, for you to say something this ridiculous."
  • "I remember those old good days were immigrants worked 9-5 on the cotton fields earning a decent salary," another user quipped.
  • "My peeps were not born here and they certainly did not immigrant," another user said. "They were stolen from their home lands and brought here in chains. Please don't leave this fact out of the equation."

Another commenter echoed the same sentiments — and added an additional observation: "Native Americans came here from somewhere else too! You think they grew up out of the ground one day. BLACK AMERICANS were brought here against our will and YOUR ancestors forced into 200 years of slavery to build this country. We aren't immigrants. F*** you Mark."

Historian Blair Amadeus Imani offered a more civil correction to Ruffalo:

— Blair Amadeus Imani (@Blair Amadeus Imani)1603420184.0

"Mark, there's the descendants of enslaved people. We don't consider ourselves immigrants we were forcibly brought here against our will," she wrote.

Ruffalo appreciated the gesture: "Dear Blair, you are right on here. That is profound and true. I stand corrected. I always learn from you and always come away more mindful of the power and depth of our words and what they mean. But also what is being left out of the conversation. Thank you."

Red State said Ruffalo deleted the tweet after many demands to take it down.

Daily Caller reporters say authorities forcibly detained, kicked, repeatedly hit them with clubs during Wisconsin riots

Two reporters for the Daily Caller say authorities detained them and hit them repeatedly as they covered demonstrations Thursday in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Demonstrations and riots erupted Thursday night in Wauwatosa after authorities announced that the police officer who fatally shot 17-year-old Alvin Cole would not face charges.

Investigators have said that Cole was running from police after reportedly firing a stolen handgun when police fired on the teen.

What are the details?

According to a Friday morning report from the outlet, reporters Shelby Talcott and Richie McGinniss said officers detained them even after they identified themselves as members of the press.

On Twitter, Talcott wrote, "@RichieMcGinniss and I just got detained/almost arrested. Officers kicked me and hit me with a billy club and repeatedly hit Richie with a club (we were not resisting). Luckily, an officer came while we were waiting in the police van and recognized that we were press."

Following the alleged detainment, Talcott said that officers let her and McGinniss go.

"Richie had his press credentials visible before he was taken down," Talcott said. "I was sitting in the car (outside of the area where protesters were being arrested) waiting for Richie (who was filming)."

The two were covering the demonstrations along with Campus Reform senior campus correspondent Blair Nelson and independent reporter Brendan Gutenschwager.

Talcott alleged that authorities demanded McGinniss and Nelson leave the area and said that the two reporters complied with the order.

"Several officers then chased the boys down right as they reached our car & forced the rest of us out of the vehicle before making arrests," Talcott wrote in a now-viral Twitter thread. "Richie captured audio of the incident."

Talcott also shared photos of herself and McGinniss with what she said were injuries sustained in the detainment.

She captioned the snap, "We'll have some nice cuts and bruises in the coming days[.]"

VIDEO: BLM rioters smash windows of homes in residential Wisconsin after DA doesn't charge cop in fatal shooting

Black Lives Matter protests and riots erupted Wednesday night in Wisconsin following the decision to not charge a police officer in the fatal shooting of an armed 17-year-old in February. The civil unrest broke out in residential areas of Wauwatosa, a city west of Milwaukee with a population of 48,000.

Videos show BLM protesters smashed the windows of homes in Wauwatosa. One person yells, "That's somebody's home!"

The situation became so serious that the Wauwatosa police warned local residents to "shelter in their homes, lock their doors, and move away from windows." Police fired tear gas outside homes in an effort to disperse the crowd.

Independent reporter Brendan Gutenschwager and Town Hall reporter Julio Rosas covered the protests and riots in the residential area and shared video of the chaotic scene.

The protests were ignited by the decision by Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm to not charge Officer Joseph Mensah, who lethally shot 17-year-old Alvin Cole on Feb. 2 after the teen fired a stolen gun.

In a 14-page letter, Chisholm declared that Mensah acted in self-defense.

"In this case, there is sufficient evidence that Officer Mensah had an actual subjective belief that deadly force was necessary and that belief was objectively reasonable," Chisholm said. "I do not believe that the State could disprove self-defense or defense of others in this case and therefore could not meet the burden required to charge Officer Mensah."

Chisholm wrote that Cole was "encountered by Wauwatosa Police officers in the parking lot of Mayfair Mall, ran from the police, discharged the firearm and was ordered to surrender the weapon." The investigation stated that Cole "did not surrender the weapon and was fired upon by Officer Mensah causing his death."
