Bodycam video shows moment authorities put to death massive alligator that killed 41-year-old Florida woman

Newly released bodycam video shows the moment that authorities put to death a massive alligator that had recently killed a Florida woman.

Last September, a Florida man noticed what appeared to be a human body hanging out of the mouth of a huge alligator in Pinellas County.

The witness, Jamarcus Bullard, told WTVT at the time, "I noticed it had a body in its mouth, like a lower torso, so once I saw that, I ran straight to the fire department and got them, they confirmed it was a body."

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was called to the grisly scene and discovered the body of 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham was in the alligator's mouth. Bodycam footage from the FWC shows authorities wrangling the massive alligator with ropes and chains. Suddenly in the bodycam video released last week, one of the officers is seen using a rifle to shoot and "humanely" kill the animal.

The gator – nearly 14 feet in length – was later dissected, and some of Peckham's remains were found inside the beast.

Peckham was a homeless woman who lived in a campsite roughly 35-45 feet away from the canal where the alligator attack occurred. Investigators found no evidence that the alligator attacked the woman at the campsite in Largo, Florida.

Peckham's family last saw her a day before the deadly alligator attack. A park ranger reported seeing the woman near the canal a week before her tragic death.

Peckham's daughter, Breanna Dorris, shared her grief during a vigil held in September.

The heartbroken daughter said at the time of her mother's death, "It's surreal, but I'm super grateful her community can pull together in times like this. It shows we have an amazing support team behind us in times of tragedy,"

Doris wrote a Facebook post that read: "The past 24 hours have been filled with grief and sorrow and unbearable pain for our family. My mother, Sabrina Peckham, was the victim of the alligator attack at McKay Creek. She was a part of the homeless population living in the nearby wooded area. It's believed she may have been walking to or from her campsite near the creek in the dark when the gator attacked."

Since the fatal incident, Pinellas County has installed fencing and signs warning people to stay away from the canal.

The canal, known as McKay Creek, connects Ridgecrest Lake and Taylor Lake. Alligators have been known to use this waterway to travel between the two lakes.

Dramatic video shows father on his knees begging as hero cop saves his choking baby's life: 'Officer, please!'

A Los Angeles Police department sergeant's body cam footage captured the moment a panicked motorist ran into the road with a listless toddler in his arms.

What are the details?

Sgt. Bumjin Kim was on patrol duty in the area of Bellevue Avenue and Echo Park Avenue on the evening of Jan. 19 when he noticed two parents across the intersection screaming for help.

A release from the LAPD stated that a man in hysterics rushed toward the officer with a limp child in his arms.

The man could be heard screaming, "I don't know what's wrong! Officer, please! I don't know what's wrong!"

Kim jumped into action and was almost immediately able to clear the choking toddler's airway after deftly radioing for medical backup.

The unnamed child immediately began crying and gasping for air after the officer dislodged the object from her throat.

"On January 19, an LAPD Sergeant assigned to Rampart Division was on patrol when he saw parents yelling for help, with a lifeless toddler in their arms," the report said. "Without hesitation, the Sergeant took immediate action, cleared the airway, and seconds later the toddler was breathing."

'We shared a hug'

KHOU-TV reported that Kim, a father of a 3-year-old child, said that he is “glad everybody’s safe.”

“The whole incident ... 45 seconds, or a minute, whatever it was ... but my big thing was at the time was getting the paramedics there,” he said. “And it didn’t hit really me at about what’s going on until got they got there, and there was a sigh of relief once the baby started breathing and crying.”

Kim said that he and the child's father embraced following the emotional ordeal.

“I spoke to the dad, and ... he was grateful. We shared a hug,” Kim said. “I think it was a sigh of relief for both of us fathers.”

Paramedics arrived on the scene and took the child to a local hospital for treatment. She was listed in stable condition and is expected to recover.

VIDEO: Mother of 5-year-old boy files lawsuit after police handcuff, scream in face of child after he wanders away from school

A Maryland mother has filed a lawsuit against the Montgomery County Police Department after her 5-year-old son was subjected to a "nightmare" experience, according to NBC News, including threats, screaming, and handcuffing.

The incident took place in January 2020, and Montgomery County police released body camera footage of the exchange on Friday.

What are the details?

On a January day in 2020, the child — who remains unidentified at the time of this reporting — reportedly wandered away from school without permission.

The disturbing video begins when one of the officers discovers the child on a residential street near the school.

An officer stops the child and can be heard asking, "Listen to me: How old are you?"

The child responded, "Five."

"Five?" the officer fired back. "You feel like you can make your own decisions? You feel like you can do what you want?"

The child, naturally, became emotional and began to cry and carry on during the questioning. As police walked the child to the rear of the patrol vehicle, the child began screaming.

"You better stop," an officer told the boy in response.

According to the outlet, "As the 50-minute video unfolds, the interactions between law enforcement officers and the child escalate. The boy sobs and appears inconsolable as officers repeatedly tell him that he is 'bad' and should be beaten."

One of the officers can be heard asking the child, "Does your mama spank you? Does your mama spank you? She's going to spank you today."

"When the boy doesn't stop crying," the report continued, "a police officer screams just inches from his face. Later, after the child was reunited with his mother, a police officer takes out a pair of handcuffs and places the little boy's wrists inside them."

The officer told the boy, "You know what these are for? These are for people who don't want to listen and don't know how to act."

In a statement, Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando said, "I watched in horror as what can only be described as a nightmare unfolded for nearly an hour. It made me sick."

What's happening now?

A spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police said in a statement that both officers remain employed with the department.

The results of an internal investigation, the spokesperson said, are confidential under Maryland state law.

Montgomery County school officials issued a statement on the body camera footage, saying it was "extremely difficult" to watch.

"Our heart aches for this student," the statement added. "There is no excuse for adults to ever speak to or threaten a child in this way. As parents and grandparents, we know that when families send their children to school, they expect that the staff will care for them, keep them safe, and use appropriate intervention processes when needed."

The child's mother — who also remains unnamed at the time of this reporting — filed a suit against the department, Montgomery County, and Montgomery County Public Schools.

She is seeking "compensation and justice" for the child's ordeal.

Anything else to know?

According to WRC-TV, attorney James Papirmeister said that the child was inconsolable during the ride in the police car.

"Very, very upset, not offering any physical resistance," he said of the child's demeanor. "And the officers, and in turn the school, treated him like he was a common criminal."

"The officers [were] advising [the mother] how to get away with beating the child without getting in trouble for child abuse," Papirmeister added. "She said, 'I don't want to beat my child.' They said that the boy wouldn't stop crying, an officer allegedly told him, 'I don't want to hear it. I still don't want to hear it. You better stop. You better cut that out.'"

Matthew Bennett, another attorney representing the mother, added, "Something went awry here and we're hoping that a lesson can be learned from it in the sense that it doesn't happen in the future and whatever training or retraining needs to be done gets done."
