House investigation finds Rep. Jamaal Bowman gave 'misleading' and 'less than credible' statements about fire alarm incident

The House Ethics Committee will not take disciplinary action against Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) despite finding that he was not honest about the infamous fire alarm incident.

Last September, Bowman claimed he "mistakenly" pulled a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building believing that it would open an exit door. Bowman claimed he made the mistake because he was "rushing" to the House floor "to make a vote."

But a 16-page report from the Office of Congressional Ethics found that Bowman lied.

"Surveillance video obtained by the OCE shows Rep. Bowman deliberately pulling the fire alarm lever without ever looking back to determine whether the alarm facilitated the opening of the emergency doors," the report explained. "Indeed ... Rep. Bowman casually walked away from the secured area upon triggering the fire alarm, appearing seemingly disinterested in actually departing through the exit.

"More importantly, at the time of this incident, the House stood adjourned. Rep. Bowman, contrary to statements issued by his office, was en route to an emergency Caucus (Democrat) meeting — not to cast an imminent vote," the report added.

The report included text messages showing that Bowman knew about the caucus meeting "prior to activating the fire alarm," which proves he knew that he was not heading to the House floor to vote.

The OCE, however, stopped short of accusing Bowman of deliberately lying.

"In light of this evidence, the OCE finds the explanation provided by Rep. Bowman’s official statement and those published by his staff to be less than credible or otherwise misleading," the report said.

Despite the misleading statements, the House Ethics Committee determined that taking disciplinary action against Bowman "would be moot" because the House already voted to censure him.

Bowman, moreover, has complied with a deferred sentencing agreement, the committee explained.

As part of that agreement, Bowman pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of setting off a false fire alarm. Bowman was also required to pay a $1,000 fine and issue a formal apology to the Capitol Police in exchange for prosecutors dropping the criminal charge.

You have to hear Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin’s INSANE conspiracy theories about why Jamaal Bowman pulled the fire alarm …

Democrat Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York was caught on camera pulling the fire alarm in a Capitol Hill office building just minutes before a vote took place regarding whether or not to fund the government and avoid the looming shutdown.

Although Bowman has sworn it was an accident, many are skeptical, thinking that perhaps he pulled the alarm with the intention of delaying the meeting, especially since the fire alarm was clearly marked.

“He had no idea what he was doing – it was a red thing and it said 'fire alarm' on it,” mocks Dave Rubin.

One person who is not in the least skeptical, however, is 'The View’s' uber-liberal Whoopi Goldberg.

In fact, she is so certain of Bowman’s innocence that she said, “I know I would have pressed everything if you told me I had to get in there; I would have pressed whatever I had to press get the door to open cuz I knew you would expect me not to be there to vote.”

“When people pull stunts,” she said in reference to those accusing Bowman of intentionally pulling the alarm, “I tend to think they may be more full of it than he is.”

“Whoopi, you dullard,” sighs Dave.

“Even if all of that was true, a fire alarm doesn't open a door. There's no connection; there's no electronic connection between the fire alarm and the door,” he says.

But Sunny Hostin’s theory is even stupider.

“I know Jamaal, and so again, I'm a little biased, but the doors that are normally open so that he could get to the chambers to read were somehow miraculously closed. How did that happen?” she said, insinuating that somebody must have set Bowman up.

But Alyssa Farah Griffin, the “pet conservative” who’s really on the show to maintain the illusion of inclusivity, perhaps has the worst theory of them all.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman blames his staff for sending out talking points calling Republicans 'Nazi members' without his consent

Progressive Democrat Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York offered a bizarre excuse and apology after his office sent out talking points calling his detractors "Nazi members" over his fire alarm scandal.

Republicans and others have called for Bowman to be expelled from Congress and face criminal charges after he admitted to pulling a fire alarm on Saturday before an important vote on the budget. He said that it was an accident caused by his hurrying to get to the vote.

On Monday, his office sent out a bizarre memo with talking points accusing his critics of being Nazis. Soon after, he apologized.

"I just became aware that in our messaging guidance, there was inappropriate use of the term Nazi without my consent," responded Bowman on social media.

"I condemn the use of the term Nazi out of its precise definition," he added. "It is important to specify the term Nazi to refer to members of the Nazi party & neo-Nazis."

The memo offered statements that Democrats could use to defend Bowman against his critics.

“I believe Congressman Bowman when he says this was an accident. Republicans need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.”

Bowman has been mocked and ridiculed relentlessly online, where he has been the target of hilarious memes and photoshop jokes. He was similarly mocked about his Nazi apology.

"The Congressman’s office did not know the use of the term Nazi would set off rhetorical alarms. They thought calling people Nazis was what opened rhetorical doors. This can all be very confusing," joked commentator Mary Katherine Hamm on social media.
