Brooklyn subway shooting suspect arrested while wandering NYC streets, will reportedly face terror-related charges

New York City police have arrested 62-year-old Frank James, the primary suspect in Tuesday morning's Brooklyn subway shooting that injured more than two dozen people.

In a tweet Wednesday afternoon, NYPD commissioner Keechant Sewell declared, "Frank Robert James had nowhere else to run or hide — and is now in NYPD custody. The work of our detectives is second to none and the dedication of our patrol officers is never ending."

James was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after being spotted by bystanders at a McDonald’s near East 6th Street and First Avenue in the East Village, the New York Post reported.

Police quickly responded to the tip and eventually intercepted the suspect a few blocks away at St. Mark’s Place and First Avenue. When officers caught up to James, they found him casually sauntering down the street. He was reportedly taken into custody "without incident."

"My fellow New Yorkers, we got him. We got him," Mayor Eric Adams said in a press conference following news of the arrest, according to WABC-TV.

Videos purportedly showing the moment that James was handcuffed and led into the back of a patrol vehicle have been posted on social media.

James is currently being held at the NYPD's 9th Precinct.

He is expected to face terror-related charges for setting off a smoke grenade on a subway train car before opening fire on dozens of innocent passengers. He was wearing a gas mask and a reflective vest at the time of the attack.

WABC reported that James will be charged under a federal statute that prohibits terrorist and other violent attacks within a mass transit system. Another federal charge for crossing state lines will also be applied.

James, who is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was identified as a suspect in the case after a set of keys and a credit card linked him to the crime scene.

Another surveillance video published by WNBC-TV allegedly shows James entering a subway station two hours prior to the attack.

In the hours following the hellish attack, rambling and conspiracy-laden videos that James had recently uploaded to YouTube were unearthed and circulated. In the videos, James espoused controversial views on race, angrily complained about the city's mental health services, and threatened NYC's mayor.

"It’s just a matter of time before these white motherf***ers decide, ‘Hey listen, enough is enough, these n***ers got to go,'" he said in one of the videos, seeming to predict a race war was coming.

Witnesses have claimed the attacker was seen muttering under his breath before launching the attack.

Mayor Adams defended the terror charges on Wednesday, saying, "There was a clear desire to create terror. If you bring a smoke bomb or would you bring an automatic weapon with a gas mask and in a very methodical way injured ... innocent New Yorkers, that is terror."

Illegal alien allegedly posed as rideshare driver,  recorded himself sexually abusing women, and kept trophies

A man who is illegally present in the United States is accused of posing as a rideshare driver, recording himself sexually assaulting women who were unconscious, and keeping trophies of his victims.

Prosecutors allege that 43-year-old Raul Guaman was in possession of 16 drivers licenses and 32 cellphones, trophies that he stole from his victims.

Guaman is originally from Ecuador. He worked in construction in Bay Shore, New York.

“Police have recovered videos from the defendant’s cellphone, appearing to show him sexually abusing a number of women who are unconscious,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini.

Three victims have been identified.

Sini said that Guaman allegedly recorded himself sexually assaulting a young woman in November while she slept at a Brightwaters home he had broken into.

“It would later be revealed that he had visited that same house on four other occasions and had secretly taken videos of another victim inside the home,” Sini said.

Guaman was then arrested when he blew past a stop sign. Police said they found multiple IDs.

They investigated further and found the videos of his sexual assaults on his cellphone, as well as the trophies at his home.

Police accused him of a "pattern of predatory behavior with impunity.”

“In my almost 37-year career, this is one of the most shocking cases I've ever seen,” said Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron.

Police are looking for other women who might have been victimized by Guaman and may not even know it.

“There does definitely seem to be a serial aspect to this case where he may have done this repeatedly over the course of years to numerous victims,” said Cameron.

Prosecutors said that he was facing deportation over his illegal immigration status, but he now faces 25 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

NYPD releases footage of rape suspect as authorities continue search for Central Park rapist amid crime surge in the city

The New York Police Department on Thursday released footage of a person believed to be a suspect in a vicious Thursday morning rape that took place in Central Park.

What are the details?

According to a report from WCBS-TV, a female jogger in her 20s was reportedly knocked to the ground in Central Park, raped for at least 45 minutes, and reportedly choked to unconsciousness.

She was able to flag down help after regaining consciousness and was taken to a local hospital.

Police said that the suspect, who remains unnamed and on the loose at the time of this reporting, was later caught on surveillance camera. The suspect was seen clad in all-black clothing, wearing a black face mask and black ball cap-style hat. According to a report from the Daily Mail, the security footage showed the suspect using an emergency exit to enter a train station, bypassing paying the fare.

One female park-goer told the station that she was shocked to learn of the broad-daylight attack.

"I wish I could go wherever in the park that I wanted, but clearly you can't," the woman said.

Another added, "You would think in the morning you would be safer when it's daylight."

WCBS reported that sexual assaults in New York City are up at least 2.5% since 2020.

Police continue to investigate the incident and are on the lookout for the suspect.

Anyone with any information on the attack or the suspect's identity is asked to call NYPD's Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).

Anything else?

A second incident later took place at 103rd Street near FDR Drive, the station reported, but police do not believe that the attacks are related at this time.

“At this time we will just say that we have two separate sexual assaults, but we're not saying that the MOs are similar, no. We're just saying we have two separate assaults and we are investigating both, but we are exploring all angles at this time," NYPD Inspector Michael King told the station.

Authorities arrested 38-year-old Howard Shaw in the case of the 103rd Street attack.

Shaw, who was previously arrested for rape and robbery, was just released from jail two days ago.

The Daily Mail reported that both assaults came hours after a suspect raped a 13-year-old girl in the Bronx's Crotona Park after school.

Police are working to identify the suspect involved in the case of the child's assault.

Sexual assault and rape aren't the only crimes on the rise across New York City — the Daily Mail reports that felony assaults year over year have increased from 17,910 to 19,392.
