Chicago shootings: 50 people shot, 10 fatally this weekend. New video shows criminals armed with makeshift machine guns open fire on crowd, killing 14 year old.

Chicago suffered yet another bloody weekend as scores of shootings erupted throughout the city. Shooting fatalities reached double digits for the second weekend in a row.

WLS-TV reported on Sunday night, "At least 50 people have been shot, 10 fatally, in Chicago shootings so far this weekend, police said."

There were 51 people shot, including 12 fatally, during Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.

Included in this weekend's rampant gun violence was a tragic mass shooting in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side.

A large group gathered to commemorate a man who perished in a fatal car crash four years earlier, according to police. A verbal altercation erupted during the tribute for the deceased man, which then quickly escalated into a deadly gunfight, said Deputy Chief Adnardo Gutierrez of the Chicago Police Department.

"They were out there celebrating and then something happened, and a verbal altercation occurred, and somebody began shooting, or multiple people began shooting,” Gutierrez said during a press conference on Sunday.

Surveillance video shows the moment that gunfire erupts. People at the celebration of life event run for their lives. The footage shows a gunman behind a car shooting his firearm.

A 25-year-old woman was fatally shot and six other people were wounded. The woman was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital. The six other victims were hospitalized, including a 29-year-old man in critical condition with a chest wound.

Police are still investigating the mass shooting, and no suspects have been arrested as of Sunday afternoon.

The heartbreaking gun violence was not only reserved for the weekend.

CWB Chicago released chilling video of a group of criminals armed with makeshift machine guns opening fire on a crowd. The alarming video reportedly shows a fatal shooting that happened around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

The shocking video released on Sunday shows four armed suspects scurrying through a vacant lot and hiding behind bushes and a building. Then they all spring out and unleash a hailstorm of gunfire into a crowd not seen on the video. Two of the shooters were using machine gun-like firearms.

CWB Chicago reported, "The offenders whose guns generated automatic fire were likely using handguns equipped with 'Glock switches,' illegal after-market devices that enable semi-automatic pistols to fire more than one round with a single trigger pull. The devices are prohibited under state and federal laws."

The shooting killed 14-year-old Pierre Johnson after he was shot in the chest. Two men, ages 18 and 19, were critically wounded. A 21-year-old man was shot in the hand.

Officers with the Chicago Police Department responded to the shooting. When they arrived at the crime scene, a 16-year-old boy shot at them, and they returned fire.

The boy was found with a gunshot wound to his leg, but investigators said it was not clear if he was shot by police or the earlier shooting.

The boy was arrested and charged with six counts of attempted first-degree murder of peace officers, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm toward a vehicle occupied by peace officers, three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle, and unlawful use of a weapon by a person under 21, according to police.

Biden sending strike force to help combat skyrocketing crime in Chicago and four other cities

President Joe Biden ordered a strike force to help curb crime in Chicago, Illinois, and four other cities as homicides skyrocketed over the Fourth of July weekend.

Chicago experienced its most violent weekend so far this year with more than 100 people shot and 19 people killed.

So far in 2021 there has been an increase of 58% in people being shot from the same period in 2019, according to statistics from the city's police department.

The strike force will cooperate with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and focus on illegal gun trafficking. The operation will also send teams to New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, has been under intense pressure to combat the violence in the city. In a recent interview with a local PBS station, she blamed crime on a host of issues.

"I believe that violence is a manifestation of systemic problems, and it's a public health crisis," said Lightfoot. "When you see, in way too many neighborhoods, a lack of jobs, a lack of investment — these are historic, decades-long problems."

She also blamed the gun crime on surrounding cities and states with "lax" gun laws.

Chicago Alderman Anthony Napolitano has fired back at Lightfoot for blaming gun laws when Chicago has some of the strictest gun restrictions in the nation.

"We have a people problem here in Chicago. I've been saying this for a long time, we have zero accountability for parents in the city of Chicago," said Napolitano. "Nobody is raising their kids anymore, the gangs are raising them."

Crime has become such a problem in major U.S. cities that some liberals are sounding the alarm that Democrats will face defeat in future elections if the violence continues to increase.

CHICAGO: Crazy dashcam video captures frightening moment gunmen open fire at busy traffic light

Shocking dashcam video shows the alarming moment that gunshots rang out at a busy traffic light in Chicago.

Huber Pereznegron was caught in traffic in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood. He was waiting at a red light at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, and that's when a frightening shootout erupted in the middle of traffic.

"I see one guy getting out of the backseat with a rifle," Pereznegron told WMAQ-TV. "I really didn't think too much of it, because I didn't think it was real, until the second person got out, then I saw him with another gun."

The dashcam in Pereznegron's vehicle captures the moment of the spine-chilling shootout as well as the reactions by Pereznegron and the passenger in his car.

The viral video shows two men exit a red sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, in front of Pereznegron, and then fire multiple rounds at another vehicle near the traffic light at East 86th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway.

"He starts shooting and all of the sudden the magazine falls out and he stops shooting or otherwise it could have been a lot worse," Pereznegron told WBBM-TV.

When the gunmen opened fire, Pereznegron and his friend slouched down to try to take cover, but said, "I ducked, but I wanted to see."

Pereznegron attempted to put his car into reverse, but he was boxed in since there was bumper-to-bumper traffic.

"I wanted to reverse, but I was kind of trapped," Pereznegron said. "I really couldn't go anywhere. I was stuck."

"All that I was thinking, hoping the other guys were not going to shoot back towards us," he said.

Both gunmen quickly retreated back to their vehicle and drove away.

The hail of bullets set off a nearby ShotSpotter, an audio sensor that alerts police to the sound of gunfire.

No injuries were reported.

Chicago police have launched an investigation, but have yet to make any arrests in the shooting case.

"They don't really care anymore when they go out, who sees them or what they do," Pereznegron said of criminals in Chicago. "I'm not sure what's going on through their mind. This stuff needs to stop. There was a lot of innocent people around them."

Pereznegron revealed that he installed the dashcam about six months ago after a car accident.

Earlier this month, video captured another shooting in a Chicago street where a couple were dragged out of their car and shot to death. Police say the man and woman were ambushed and killed in an execution-style shooting. The couple were parents to two young children.

At least 43 people, including two minors, were shot this weekend in Chicago as of Sunday afternoon. Two people had been killed from shootings, according to WBBM.

As of June 23, 316 people have been killed in Chicago in 2021, preliminary police statistics show.

Chicago man faces murder charges for shooting death of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams at McDonald's drive-thru

A Chicago man faces murder charges in connection with the death of 7-year-old Jaslyn Adams, who was shot and killed while in a vehicle with her father at a McDonald's drive-thru just after 4 p.m. on April 18.

Jaslyn was with her father, Jontae Adams, at the drive-thru lane of a McDonald's in the West Side of Chicago. The first-grader was shot six times and died of her gunshot wounds. The father was shot in the abdomen and survived the deadly shooting in the Homan Square neighborhood, a western suburb of Chicago.

Marion Lewis faces 18 felony charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated vehicular hijacking, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Some of the charges are from a police chase on Thursday where Lewis crashed his car and then attempted to carjack another vehicle with a family inside. Illinois State Police said Lewis fired gunshots at police before Chicago Police Department officers returned fire and struck him in the arm.

Lewis was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody. Lewis is expected to be in court on Sunday.

CPD said they recovered two guns from that scene, including an AK-47, WLS-TV reported. "Both those weapons that were on his person that were recovered, they did test positive to the murder weapons used at the scene to kill Jaslyn," CPD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said.

Police believe the shooting at the McDonald's that killed the young girl was gang-related, and the investigation is ongoing.

"We are saying at this point in the investigation that he was involved in the murder of Jaslyn Adams," Chicago police Supt. David Brown said of Lewis.

Law enforcement is still searching for other suspects in the case, but did not say how many suspects there are.

"We're limited in what we can say because we have other offenders to bring in on this horrific crime, but I will say the hard work of Area Four detectives and collaboration not only with suburban department officers as well as our district officers and a lot of technology has got us to this point," Brown told reporters. "But we're not done."

"You can run but you can't hide," Brown said. "We are going to bring you to justice for this crime. The Adams family deserves nothing less."

Adams' grandmother Lawanda McMullen said the family was "ecstatic" that Lewis was arrested, but called for anyone involved with the shooting death of the 7-year-old girl to "just turn yourself in."

"You know a 7-year-old girl she had nothing to do with that at all," McCullen said. "You know if you have any heart, you know if you have a child — just think about your family."

"We're overwhelmed, happy with some relief, but not a lot because they don't have all the suspects in custody," McMullen said of the arrest of Lewis.

McMullen described her young granddaughter, "I rarely ever seen her sad. Bubbly is the right word, very bubbly."

After USPS carrier shot, Chicago postal workers threaten to stop delivering mail because it's too dangerous

Chicago postal workers have hinted that they could stop delivering mail because some neighborhoods are just too dangerous. The threat comes shortly after a USPS mail carrier was shot in Chicago while on the job.

On Friday, Chicago postal workers attended a rally with community organizers to demand that something be done about the violent crime that is plaguing the city. The night before, postal workers attended a prayer vigil near the crime scene in the Burnside neighborhood where a USPS mail carrier was recently shot.

Mack Julion, the president of the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers, instructed postal workers to stop delivering mail if they don't feel safe.

"Any letter carrier who does not feel safe in any one of these communities then they are not to deliver mail and customers have to pick up their mail," Julion said. "We are not going to have another situation where the letter carrier is shot down."

At around 11:35 a.m. on Sept. 10, a 24-year-old USPS mail carrier was shot four times during a drive-by shooting while on the job. Authorities don't believe that the mail carrier was the intended target of the shooting.

According to WLS-TV, Chicago Fire Department officials said the woman was critically injured. She remains hospitalized because of the injuries suffered during the shooting.

The Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect who carried out the shooting.

A day after the postal worker was shot, a USPS employee was shot with a paintball gun in Chicago's South Side.

"That's a traumatic experience, especially when you had a coworker shot the day before," Julion said. "It's not funny, these are federal employees...our members are at work trying to do their job trying to support their families, trying to serve the community."

In March, a 47-year-old USPS employee was shot while delivering mail in Brighton Park. The man, who was one of two people shot during the attack, was struck in the head. The man told WLS that he feels fortunate that he wasn't more seriously injured.

Isis Edmond, a Chicago postal worker for seven years, said she has personally experienced shootings while delivering mail.

"You pray. Pray that god protects you," Edmond told WLS. "But you try to be aware of your surroundings, just look out, but sometimes, in her case, you can't see everything."

Shootings are so common in Chicago that Edmond has a process.

"I've been delivering mail and gunshots rung out. I've had to run to my truck and stay in my truck until everything deescalated," Edmond said. "Contact 911 of course. Contact my supervisor to tell them what's going on. Then leave the area. That's the process."

At the time of publication, 30 people were shot in Chicago this weekend, two of them fatal.

Homicides in Chicago have spiked over 50%; murders have already surpassed 2019's total. Chicago gun violence is on pace to reach alarming numbers not seen since the 1990s.
