Hollywood director defends child drag shows during rambling Oscars victory speech

A Hollywood director defended children dressing up at drag shows during his rambling victory speech at the Oscars awards show Sunday.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" co-director Daniel Scheinert accepted the award for Best Director and then launched into an admonition against recent bills passed against drag shows that include children in the audience.

“We want to dedicate this to the mommies, all the mommies of the world. To our moms. Specifically to my mom and dad," said Scheinert with his co-director Daniel Kwan beside him.

"Ken and Becky, thank you for not squashing my creativity when I was making really disturbing horror films or really perverted comedy films, or dressing in drag as a kid, which is a threat to nobody,” he added.

The salute to children in drag received a rousing applause from the elite celebrity crowd.

Many on the right have called for local governments to ban children from attending drag shows on the basis that they will be inappropriately exposed to sexual themes. Defenders of "family friendly" drag shows claim that children learn to accept themselves and their sexual identities by attending drag shows.

The critically acclaimed film Scheinert directed garnered various other award victories at the Oscars, including Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, who used her speech to tout racial representation in Hollywood.

"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams do come true," the 60-year-old actress said.

She also went on to take a veiled jab at CNN's Don Lemon for his comments mocking Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley as being "past her prime."

Gov. DeSantis considers sending Child Protective Services against people exposing children to drag shows

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he was considering sending Child Protective Services against people exposing children to drag shows.

DeSantis was asked about proposed legislation about children at drag shows during a media briefing on Wednesday.

"We have child protective statutes on the books. We have laws against child endangerment," said DeSantis, who added that his staff was looking at the law.

He went on to reference "disturbing" videos from a drag show performance at a bar in Dallas, Texas, that showed children shoving dollar bills into the underwear of drag performers.

"Part of the reason why we fought the fight with Parents Rights in Education is because there's a movement to interject these things like gender ideology in elementary schools even, and my view is, our school need to be teaching these kids to read and write and add and subtract, and do the things that are supposed to be done in school," DeSantis continued.

"Injecting these agendas into it is wrong, and that's why we did the Parent's Rights and Education bill," he added.

Videos and images from the drag show event in Dallas outraged many on social media. Others on the left defended the incident and accused critics of bigotry and prejudice against alternate lifestyles.

“It used to be kids would be off-limits. Used to be everybody agreed with that,” DeSantis continued. “And now it just seems like there’s a concerted effort to be exposing kids more and more to things that are not age appropriate.”

He concluded by saying Florida needs to be a "family-friendly state" and received overwhelming support from those attending the briefing.

DeSantis is widely considered to be the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination for 2024 unless former President Donald Trump chooses to run again.
