Encrypted apps urged by lawmakers amid major Chinese telecom breach

U.S. officials are imploring individuals and companies alike to use encrypted messaging apps in order to minimize the chances of the communist Chinese regime intercepting their communications.

The recommendations coincide with the confirmation by a top U.S. security official this week of a historic state-sponsored hacking campaign that compromised at least eight American telecommunications companies, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Microsoft dubbed the Chinese group responsible Salt Typhoon. Salt Typhoon, which has been active since at least 3020, is also occasionally referred to as GhostEmperor, Earth Estries, UNC2286 or FamousSparrow.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the Salt Typhoon attack in September, noting that the hackers penetrated numerous broadband providers earlier this year, affording them a foothold within the broadband infrastructure with which to access private data and possible launch a ruinous cyberattack.

While exponents of the Chinese regime have repeatedly denied its role in the attack, American officials aren't buying what they are selling.

'Encryption is your friend.'

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI issued a joint statement last month indicating that the U.S. government's "continued investigation into the People's Republic of China (PRC) targeting of commercial telecommunications infrastructure has revealed a broad and significant cyber espionage campaign."

"Specifically, we have identified that PRC-affiliated actors have compromised networks at multiple telecommunications companies to enable the theft of customer call records data, the compromise of private communications of a limited number of individuals who are primarily involved in government or political activity, and the copying of certain information that was subject to U.S. law enforcement requests pursuant to court orders," said the agencies.

Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) stated on Nov. 29, "Salt Typhoon is the worst telecom hack in American history, and demands both a proportionate response to the Chinese Communist Party and increased accountability for U.S. corporations to prevent these intrusions."

Auchincloss suggested to CNN that the hackers were especially brazen, re-asserting themselves in the networks after being discovered.

An unnamed senior FBI official and Jeff Greene, executive assistant director for cybersecurity at CISA, told NBC News Tuesday that Americans should use encrypted messaging apps.

"Our suggestion, what we have told folks internally, is not new here: Encryption is your friend, whether it's on text messaging or if you have the capacity to use encrypted voice communication. Even if the adversary is able to intercept the data, if it is encrypted, it will make it impossible," said Greene.

"People looking to further protect their mobile device communications would benefit from considering using a cellphone that automatically receives timely operating system updates, responsibly managed encryption and phishing resistant" multi-factor authentication for email, social media and collaboration tool accounts, said the FBI official.

Greene indicated the networks remained compromised and that intelligence agencies cannot presently "predict a time frame on when we'll have full eviction."

The FBI, CISA, and the National Security Agency published a joint guide Wednesday, titled "Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure," detailing ways that network engineers and "defenders of communications infrastructure" can harden their network devices against further exploitation by Chinese hackers.

"The PRC-affiliated cyber activity poses a serious threat to critical infrastructure, government agencies, and businesses. This guide will help telecommunications and other organizations detect and prevent compromises by the PRC and other cyber actors," Greene said in a statement.

'It should never have happened.'

The Biden White House's deputy national security adviser, Anne Neuberger, told reporters this week that none of the impacted companies have "fully removed the Chinese actors from these networks," reported the Associated Press.

"So there is a risk of ongoing compromises to communications until U.S. companies address the cybersecurity gaps the Chinese are likely to maintain their access," added Neuberger.

Neuberger added, "We don't believe any classified communications has been compromised."

After intelligence officials briefed members of the U.S. Senate Wednesday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) reportedly expressed frustration, noting, "They have not told us why they didn't catch it; what they could have done to prevent it."

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said, "The extent and depth and breadth of Chinese hacking is absolutely mind-boggling — that we would permit as much as has happened in just the last year is terrifying," reported Reuters.

The Federal Communications Commission announced Thursday that it is "taking decisive steps to address vulnerabilities in U.S. telecommunications networks following the Salt Typhoon cyberattack, a sophisticated intrusion linked to foreign state-sponsored actors. These measures aim to safeguard critical communications infrastructure and ensure national security, public safety, and economic resilience in the future."

FCC commissioner Brendan Carr tweeted, "The Salt Typhoon intrusion is a serious and unacceptable risk to our national security. It should never have happened. I will be working with national security agencies through the transition and next year in an effort to root out the threat and secure our networks."

Warning: Come November 2024, illegal immigration might 'end the Democratic system as we know it'

Two of the most pressing concerns in America currently are illegal immigration and declining confidence in our electoral system.

While these might seem like two separate issues — and in some ways, they are — they’re also inextricably connected.

“Experts are warning that all of this illegal immigration could have a major impact on House Seats and the Electoral College,” says Sara Gonzales. “Shortly after taking office in 2021, Joe Biden signed an executive order requiring that the United States Census Bureau factor in all residents, including non-citizens, as part of its calculation of the U.S. population.”

While reports from the Federation of American Immigration Reform indicate that there are an estimated “16.8 million illegal immigrants living in the United States,” the numbers are likely much, much higher.

“There’s no way it’s 16.8 million,” says Sara. “Every House seat represents an average of 761,168 residents,. So, the total number, they say, of illegal immigrants account for roughly 22 seats in the House.”

“There's no way it's 22; it would be much more than that because there are many more illegal immigrants than” are being reported.

“Right now, there are 219 Republicans and 212 Democrats in the House, and even then, you're going to expect at least some Republican defectors to [vote for] the other side. So, if we proceed with how it is now … you're ending the democratic system as we know it,” says Sara, adding that Democrats are “clearly rigging the system.”

“Democrats play to win,” agrees Eric July. “If they gotta rig the rules to benefit themselves, that’s exactly what they’re going to do. They will lie, cheat, and steal.”

“They look at the book of law, and the book of law tells them that, ‘Hey, we count everybody.’'"

"Okay, if they count everybody, then let's open the border by design,” adds Jaco Booyens.

China’s Phony Diplomatic Narrative Doesn’t Square With Its Escalating Aggression

The truth is that China's maritime provocations in the South China Sea will continue until war ensues.

Survivor of Mao's China warns America is falling for the same tricks: 'We got slavery'

As Chinese president and communist dictator Xi Jinping steps out in San Francisco to meet with Biden, Glenn Beck is getting to know one of his detractors.

A survivor of Mao’s cultural revolution, Xi Van Fleet is warning Americans about what’s waiting in the not-so-distant future for them.

Van Fleet grew up in communist China and lived through the horrors of the cultural revolution. As a young school girl, she was forced into the countryside along with other school-aged children for re-education.

Once out of high school, she escaped communism and came to America.

30 years later, she sees the same signs in America that she saw as a child in China.

Van Fleet notes that identity politics, cancel culture, weaponization of young people, and indoctrination in schools all happened in China.

While China used class to divide people into enemies of the state and allies of the state, America uses gender and sexuality.

“It looks like it’s different, but it’s the same. This indoctrination of children — it’s exactly the same,” Van Fleet tells Glenn.

Van Fleet explains that the “four olds” show just how close America is to reaching their fate. In China, this term meant eradicating the old cultures, old ideas, old habits, and old customs.

This included destroying statues and changing names of streets, stores, food labels, and institutions to all be politically correct.

“They want to replace the tradition with something new. And in China that is Maoism, and here is Maoism with American characteristics,” she explains, adding, “and then a lot of people fall for it and that is the problem with Marxism. It gives you a beautiful picture.”

“We fell for it in China too,” she continues. “We got slavery.”

The whole ideologies of Bolshevism and Maoism rested on a condemnation of the masses and their old world and identities to convert them into the 'new man' of socialism.

Facing a sputtering economy, China wants to play nice with the US

China has signaled a desire to play nice with the U.S. now that it is facing an economic slowdown.

Xi's vice president, Han Zheng, said Wednesday that China is "ready to strengthen communication and dialogue with the United States at all levels, advance mutually beneficial cooperation, properly manage differences and jointly address global challenges," reported the Agence France Presse.

Han appears eager to set an optimistic tone ahead of Chinese dictator Xi Jinping's meeting with President Joe Biden in San Francisco on Nov. 15. ABC News indicated the talks will be taking place off to the side of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

The bar for a successful meeting is fairly low granted the last time the two leaders met — at the Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, last year — Biden reportedly objected to the communist state's "coercive and increasingly aggressive actions" toward the island nation of Taiwan.

Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the communist regime, noted this week, "The road to San Francisco is not smooth, and we cannot be on autopilot."

"Both sides must ... truly implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, eliminate interference and overcome obstacles, enhance consensus and accumulate results," said Wang. "The world is big enough for the two countries to develop themselves and prosper together."

The apparent desire for improved relations is not, however, limited to the Chinese regime.

A new Morning Consult poll indicates the share of Chinese adults who said the U.S. was an "enemy" dropped from over 80% in April 2022 to 48% last month. A sliver minority figured the U.S. for friendly in early 2022, but now 45% regard the U.S. in positive terms, reported Axios.

Morning Consult noted that Chinese adults' softening stance on the United States "is likely driven more by public anxiety over the country's ailing economy than by a geopolitical about-face."

China is presently facing astronomical youth unemployment, a collapsing real estate industry, debt crises, and diminished confidence amongst foreign investors.

Liu Shijin, a member of the People's Bank of China's monetary policy committee attempted to put an optimistic spin on the Chinese economy Wednesday, stating, "China is still in the stage of medium-speed growth of about 5%, and it is possible to have the potential of medium-speed growth for five to 10 years," reported Reuters.

Liu conceded that key drivers of economic growth have slowed in the Asian nation, prompting China to seek out a new growth model. Continued tensions with the U.S. are unlikely to help China get over its slump.

Xi told U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer last month, "We have 1,000 reasons to improve China-US relations, but not one reason to ruin them," reported the AFP.

Blaze News has detailed a few reasons in recent months to doubt Xi's desire for a mutually beneficial relationship, such as when his regime:

  • backed hackers who stole 60,000 emails from 10 State Department accounts;
  • put America weeks and possibly months behind in terms of pandemic preparation, having covered up the spread of COVID-19;
  • flew a 200-foot spy balloon across the continental U.S.;
  • operated illegal police operations stateside;
  • issued bombastic threats over political visits to the sovereign island nation of Taiwan;
  • deployed spies in the U.S. to commit economic espionage;
  • helped fuel the deadly and costly opioid crisis; and
  • provoked U.S. military ships and aircraft on numerous occasions.
