'Progressive Christian' Democrat joins Senate race to unseat John Cornyn

The race for John Cornyn's Senate seat is becoming more crowded as another Democrat announced his bid for the seat on Tuesday.

Texas Representative James Talarico, a self-described "progressive Christian," announced on Tuesday that he will be throwing his hat in the ring to challenge incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn. Talarico's bid is the most recent challenge in an already crowded field of Senate hopefuls.

'We're the underdogs in this fight. We're going up against a rigged system and a lot of money.'

"I get the sense that there is a deep hunger across the political spectrum for a fundamentally different kind of politics," Talarico said in an interview ahead of his announcement, according to the AP. "It's been 10 years now of Trumpian politics, politics as a blood sport, ... and there is a hunger 10 years later for a return to more timeless values of sincerity and honesty and compassion and respect."

Talarico gained increased attention on social media when he sat down with Joe Rogan on "The Joe Rogan Experience" on July 18.

"Billionaires have taken over Texas and taken over America — but together, we can take power back for working people," Talarico said in a Tuesday morning X post.

In a request for campaign funding, Talarico delivered a similar message about punching upward in the race: "We're the underdogs in this fight. We're going up against a rigged system and a lot of money. Big Money is powerful, but it's nothing compared to People Power."

Talarico was also a leading figure in the Texas redistricting fight during July and August. Democrats fled the state in an attempt to delay the vote on the redistricting motion, which was ultimately passed in late August.

Senator John Cornyn will be running for a fifth term in the Senate. Democrats see a path to victory if Attorney General Ken Paxton beats Cornyn in the March primary.

Talarico joins a crowded field of Democrat candidates, including former NFL player Colin Allred and former astronaut Terry Virts. Beto O'Rourke has also reportedly not ruled out joining the race.

Talarico will reportedly launch his campaign with an event on Tuesday in his hometown of Round Rock, Texas, which is north of Austin.

Jasmine Crockett somehow makes the Texas flood tragedy all about herself

Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas could not resist another opportunity to shine the spotlight on herself.

In the midst of the Texas floods that have claimed the lives of at least 120 loved ones, the Democratic rising star posted a video pointing the finger at President Donald Trump and talking about how the tragedy will most affect her. Notably, Crockett's district is roughly 300 miles away from where the floods raged through Kerr County, which is about the same distance between Boston and Philadelphia.

Despite her long history of tone deaf remarks, Crockett has emerged as one of the most popular Democrats in her party.

Crockett starts the video by saying her "heart is truly heavy for all these families," before immediately making it about herself and how Trump is working around the clock to "hurt us."

"The sad part is I think that my heart is going to carry a level of weight that will continue to weigh me down as we have to continue to do our best to survive an administration that literally is against us," Crockett said in a post on Instagram. "An administration that is doing everything, in my mind, to hurt us and not help us, and it feels like we're fending for ourselves."

In the same post about the Texas flooding, Crockett made sure to give a shoutout to her hairstylist.

"My staff said y’all are commenting about my BOB!" Crockett wrote in the post. She thanked her stylist for "orchestrating the look" followed by a kissy face emoji.

Despite her long history of tone deaf remarks, Crockett has emerged as one of the most popular Democrats in her party.

In a hypothetical Senate primary, Crockett is leading with 35% support among Democratic voters, followed by former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), who polled at 20% support, according to a poll conducted by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Failed presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) were also tied for 13% in the poll.

Although Crockett has secured a healthy lead in the primary, she has not formally announced or publicly signaled her interest in running to unseat Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas.

Cornyn leans on outdated Trump endorsement as Paxton pulls ahead in polls

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas reposted an outdated endorsement from President Donald Trump on Monday as the 2026 Senate primary race ramps up.

Cornyn's campaign account posted the Trump endorsement despite it being from 2020, claiming that Cornyn votes with the president "99% of the time" and vows to "fight for Texas with the President." At the same time, early polling shows Cornyn trailing primary challenger Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

A representative for Cornyn did not respond to a request for comment from Blaze News.

Ever since Paxton entered the primary race, Cornyn's campaign has focused on tethering the senator to Trump. As of this writing, the last dozen posts on his campaign account have mentioned Trump, despite the fact that the president has yet to make an endorsement in the primary.

Even still, Cornyn may not be able to survive on Trump's coattails. Paxton is currently polling 16 points ahead of Cornyn, according to a new poll from the Senate Leadership Fund published Monday. The same poll shows Paxton 10 points ahead in a three-way race with Cornyn and Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt of Texas, who is reportedly considering a 2026 Senate run.

That being said, the same poll showed that Cornyn may be a more viable candidate than Paxton in the general election against former Democratic Rep. Colin Allred of Texas, who is considering another Senate run.

Cornyn is polling just one point ahead of Allred, according to the SLF poll, while Paxton is polling six points behind the former Democratic lawmaker. Allred previously attempted to unseat Republican Rep. Ted Cruz of Texas in 2024, although he lost by nearly nine points.
