'Grow up': Nikki Haley dings Newsweek over dress-related request for comment

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley blasted Newsweek after a reporter reached out to request a comment related to the dress Haley apparently wore to her daughter's wedding.

"My name is Gerrard Kaonga and I'm a reporter at Newsweek. I wanted to reach out for comment following a slight backlash after Haley shared images from her daughter's wedding," the reporter wrote, according to a screenshot Haley posted on Twitter. "Some have argued Haley should not have worn her dress as it is too close to the bride's white. Does Nikki Haley have any comment regarding this? Did she and her daughter discuss and decide the dresses they would be wearing ahead of the ceremony? Any comment would be appreciated."

Haley criticized the outlet when sharing a screenshot of the message: "This is why people don't trust the media. Liberal 'journalists' spend their time harassing conservatives about outfit choices. Grow up, @Newsweek. P.S. The dress was gold."

On Sunday, Haley tweeted a photo of her family and wrote, "We had the sweetest weekend celebrating Rena and Josh. Thankful for our sweet family and friends who joined us in supporting and celebrating them. Rena and Josh, we could not be more proud of both of you!"

Haley, who previously served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during a portion of President Donald Trump's White House tenure, is one of the GOP candidates currently vying for the Republican presidential nomination. She also previously served as governor of South Carolina.

The Republican primary field includes Trump, Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Asa Hutchinson, and Larry Elder — political watchers widely expect Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to jump in to the race eventually as well. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina has announced a presidential exploratory committee.

In loaded request for comment, Forbes contributor accuses DeSantis of tapping 'into the most primitive, racist proclivities of his electorate'

Bryan Griffin, who serves as press secretary to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, shared a screenshot of a request for comment that accused the governor of tapping into voters' "racist proclivities" by using the word "woke."

"Greetings, I'm a Forbes Careers Senior Contributor conducting research for an article tentatively titled, ''Woke' Has Become an Anti-Equity Slur, and Workplaces Shouldn't Condone It.' The article references Governor DeSantis' persistent use of the pejorative, divisive term ('woke') and argues that he's adopted the famous Lee Atwater strategy of weaponinging coded language to tap into the most primitive, racist proclivities of his electorate," the comment request read, according to the screenshot Griffin posted. "If you'd like to provide an on the record comment on this issue, please email that to me by 3/28 at 2:00 pm ET," the note said.

Griffin also shared a screenshot of his own response to the request.

"Dana, you've already stated your position. You aren't truth seeking, you're participating in partisan activism," Griffin wrote. "'Woke' originated as—and continues to be—a self-assigned label from the left. Perhaps ask the 'woke' thought leaders why so many people have rejected their hateful ideology. Meanwhile, as Governor Ron DeSantis has promised, Florida will continue to be where 'woke' goes to die."

Earlier this year, Politico published a piece featuring an interview with then-Politico Florida Bureau Chief Matt Dixon, who claimed that DeSantis' communications team worsens its relationship with the media by sharing screenshots of reporters' questions on Twitter.

"Calling them confrontational does a disservice to the word confrontational," Dixon said of the governor's communications team. "Under DeSantis, the institution of public communications has been upended. It previously was an area that always had some healthy tension between reporters and communications staff, but now the creation of tension is the point, as opposed to an occasional byproduct. DeSantis' communications team has openly boasted about how it's not their job to help members of the media, and are well known for taking screenshots of reporter questions and posting them on Twitter, a habit that only makes the relationship worse. Stories that they disagree with often end up as standalone headlines on right-wing websites or Fox News, and then will be endlessly retweeted and circulated by the community of Twitter trolls they have helped cultivate." Dixon is now with NBC News.

"BREAKING: @politico tells @politico that @politico isn't treated nicely enough because @politico sends emails that @politico doesn't want the world to see," Griffin tweeted at the time.

DeSantis, who won a resounding re-election victory during Florida's 2022 gubernatorial contest, is widely considered a potential 2024 presidential contender. The governor has said that he thinks he has what it takes to be president and that he believes he could defeat President Joe Biden, but he claims that he has not made the "final decision" on whether he will run.

Hilarious: Man apprehended after commenting on sheriff's office's 'Most Wanted' Facebook post: 'How about me'

Authorities in Georgia apprehended a man after he called attention to himself by leaving a comment on a Rockdale County Sheriff's Office Facebook post.

"The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office Most Wanted list will be updated as often as criminals are apprehended or new suspects emerge. Check our website for additions to the list and for captured updates," the sheriff's office noted when sharing a list of 10 wanted individuals and asking for tips from the public. "If you have seen any of these people please call the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office. We need your help," the post noted.

Christopher Spaulding, who was not one of the individuals on the most wanted list, left a brief comment on the post: "How about me," he wrote on Tuesday.

The police took notice, replying on Thursday, "Christopher Spaulding you are correct you have two warrants, we are on the way."

A Thursday Facebook post features a photo of Spaulding with his hands behind his back and a screenshot of the Facebook exchange.

"We appreciate you for your assistance in your capture! Special thanks to our Fugitive Unit for being active and efficiently apprehending Mr. Spaulding who has 2 warrants for Felony Violation of Probation," the sheriff's office wrote. "Our Top 10 is compiled based off of the severity of the charges only. By not being on this list does not mean our Fugitive Unit is not looking for you if you have an active warrant."

US announces diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics, citing 'ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang'

The U.S. will engage in a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics in response to China's "ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, and other human rights abuses," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced on Monday.

"U.S. diplomatic or official representation would treat these games as business as usual in the face of the PRC's egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, and we simply can't do that," Psaki said during a press briefing.

The Biden administration's diplomatic boycott will not prevent American athletes from competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics in February.

While some lawmakers praised the Biden administration's decision, others said that the move was inadequate, and called for the U.S. to carry out a total boycott.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) lauded the president's "strong leadership" in a statement, saying that the U.S. and the rest of the globe "cannot give our official imprimatur to these games or proceed as if there is nothing wrong with holding the Olympics in a country perpetrating genocide and mass human rights violations."

But Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said the U.S. should totally boycott the Olympics in Beijing.

"The President has once again opted for a half measure, when bold leadership was required," Cotton said in a statement about the administration's move. "The United States should fully boycott the Genocide Games in Beijing. American businesses should not financially support the Chinese Communist Party and we must not expose Team USA to the dangers of a repugnant authoritarian regime that disappears its own athletes."

The Global Times, an outlet that is viewed as a Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece, according to U.S. News and World Report, tweeted about the U.S. diplomatic boycott that, "... Chinese are relieved to hear the news, because the fewer US officials come, the fewer viruses will be brought in."

COVID-19 was discovered in Wuhan, China back in Dec. 2019, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The illness and related lockdowns and restrictions have had a significant impact on both the U.S. and the world.

“Without being invited, American politicians keep hyping the so-called diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which is purely wishful thinking and grandstanding,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, according to the Associated Press. “If the U.S. side is bent on going its own way, China will take firm countermeasures.”

The #US should follow the #Olympic spirit of "together" and stop politicizing sports and the diplomatic boycott of #Beijing2022, lest it would affect China-US dialogue and cooperation on key areas. #China will take resolute countermeasures if the US is bent on the wrong decision.pic.twitter.com/xnDBIDzGer

NASCAR suspends Mike Wallace indefinitely over social media post

Longtime NASCAR driver Mike Wallace has been suspended indefinitely for violating conduct guidelines with a social media post.

The racing sanctioning body has not yet disclosed which of Wallace's online messages was flagged as the rule-breaker, but Wallace has warned his followers against making "foolish, uneducated" posts.

What are the details?

NASCAR announced Wallace's suspension on Thursday, stating:

"According to the penalty report, Wallace violated NASCAR Rule Book Sections 12.1, 12.8 and 12.8.1.e (Member Conduct Guidelines), the last of which states:

'Member actions that could result in a fine and/or indefinite suspension, or termination:

'Public statement and/or communication that criticizes, ridicules, or otherwise disparages another person based upon that person's race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age, or handicapping condition.'"

The post on NASCAR's website also noted, "As a condition of the behavioral penalty, Wallace must also perform sensitivity training as directed by NASCAR before his reinstatement."

Fox News reported that "Wallace's Facebook feed is filled with commentary on various topics including slavery and gun violence, but NASCAR did not immediately respond to a request from Fox News to confirm if the offending post has been removed."

The most recent post on Wallace's Facebook feed is from Thursday, and he reportedly posted it ahead of NASCAR's announcement of his suspension.

Wallace wrote:

"You know as I fly across the United States today I'm ready various people's political views and I have to say a famous four star Military General that I spent time with in the MidEast told me Mike let me give you some advice don't ever get in a conversation about politics or religion unless you are really smart. I said why do you say that comment His response it's like being balanced on a single edge razor blade if you slip you will get cut!Think about that before we all make foolish uneducated post! Moral of this story is most of use just repeat what we have heard we really don't know.Have a great positive day!"

According to HITC, Wallace is 61 years old and returned to NASCAR's Xfinity Series in July after a five-year break to race for JD Motorsports.

The outlet reported that "Wallace has four wins in 497 career Xfinity starts, alongside five wins in 115 starts in Trucks, and has made 197 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series."
