Video: Teens run off after robbing man at gunpoint; concealed carrying victim shoots one of them dead

Police in Miramar, Florida, released surveillance video Thursday showing teens running off after robbing a man at gunpoint, and the victim — a concealed carrier — running after the robbers and shooting one of them dead.

What's the background?

The three teenagers — two of them 16, the third 17 — approached a man who was sitting at a gazebo watching videos on his phone in his Silver Shores gated community on Feb. 14, WTVJ-TV reported, citing arrest affidavits.

The man said the three suspects demanded his phone and backpack, and one pointed a gun at the man's chest while the other two took his property, the station said.

The newly released video shows three teens stalking and watching a victim for about 30 minutes before robbing him at gunpoint, WPLG-TV reported.

The man said the three suspects started to flee, WTVJ said. The victim told police he yelled at them to stop, WPLG added. However, one of the suspects was still pointing a gun at the victim, and that's when he pulled out his own gun and opened fire, WTVJ reported, citing the affidavits.

"During their departure, video shows the armed suspect pointing the gun backward in the direction of the victim," the affidavits said, according to WTVJ.

Azarya Murphy — a 16-year-old Miami Northwestern Senior High School football player — was shot in the back of the head and died at a local hospital, WTVJ said, adding that the other two teens fled the scene on foot.

What else?

A small black handgun that didn't belong to the robbery victim was found inches away from where Murphy was found, WTVJ said, citing the affidavits, and three spent casings also were recovered — two matching ammunition from the victim's gun and one matching ammunition from the suspect's gun, though ballistics results were pending.

WTVJ said in its video segment that detectives questioned Murphy's 16-year-old best friend, who denied being with Murphy. However, videos showed the three teens together at one of their houses in the gated community before the armed robbery and then just two teens returning to the home afterward, WTVJ said, citing the affidavits.

In addition, the victim's keys were found at one of the teens' homes, and the victim's backpack was found in a nearby lake, WTVJ said, citing the affidavits.

After the robbery and deadly shooting, Rhonda Fraser — the mother of Azarya Murphy — pleaded for 17-year-old Jonovan Campos and 16-year-old Anthony Person to turn themselves in, which they dad a few days later, WPLG reported.

Campos and Person both are charged with armed robbery, WPLG added.

The robbery victim who shot Murphy isn't facing charges, WTVJ said.

'Everything doesn't add up'

“You know, you raise your kids, you never know what they do behind your back, but at the same time, this doesn’t make any sense to me,” a distraught Fraser told WPLG back in February. “He was just so humble and mild-mannered. When you asked him what he wants to do, football was the only thing he would say. ... He doesn’t have a record. He’s never been suspended from school. I don’t know. I don’t get it.”

Fraser told the station her son was so dedicated to playing for the prominent program at Miami Northwestern that he'd wake up at 5 a.m. on school days to Uber to the house of his coach, who would then take him to school.

“Everything doesn’t add up,” Fraser added to WPLG. “If he’s robbing, why [is] he shot in the back of the head? Why [is] his phone missing? Why [is] there a gun ... next to him without his prints? Where is one plus one equaling two here, because it’s not equaling two to me.”

Fraser called Campos and Person “frenemies" who "have nothing going on for themselves. They left my son there to die," WPLG said, adding that she said the pair were "in the comfort of their home[s] with their parents. I have to put my child in the ground.”

Police said a victim reported being robbed at gunpoint by multiple people near the Silver Shores Clubhouse on Feb. 5, WPLG said in its initial story.

Two crooks open fire on man who sees them stealing catalytic converter. But their target is a concealed carrier — who shoots one of them to death.

On Wednesday night around 11:15 p.m., a 44-year-old man was sitting on the steps of his Chicago home on North Wolcott Avenue when he heard a loud noise from the street, police told the Chicago Sun-Times.

What happened next?

With that, the man walked toward the noise and saw two people under a car, police told the paper.

WGN-TV reported that the two men in question were attempting to steal a catalytic converter.

When they noticed they were being watched, they crawled out from under the car, pulled out their guns, and started shooting at the homeowner, the station said.

Whoops

What the dynamic duo perhaps didn't consider was whether or not their target was armed — and indeed he was.

In fact, the 44-year-old man has a concealed carry license, the Sun-Times reported, adding that police said he pulled out his own gun and fired back.

WGN said in its video report that at least a dozen shots were fired, with one of them hitting a nearby home's window.

But it appears the homeowner had the best aim.

He struck one of the gunmen in the neck, police told the paper, adding that 25-year-old Darion Blackman was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Blackman was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office, the Sun-Times said.

WGN reported that Blackman was arrested Sept. 9 for unlawful use of a weapon without possession of a valid Firearm Owners Identification card — and that he was released the next day.

Anything else?

The paper, citing police, said the second gunman fled and has not been arrested.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police told WLS-TV.

The homeowner wasn't injured and refused help from paramedics, police noted to the Sun-Times.

Detectives are still investigating this incident, the paper added.

Crook pulls gun on retired Chicago firefighter, demands property. But 77-year-old victim is a concealed carrier — and lethally turns the tables on crook.

Once again, someone up to no good — this time figuring he could pull a gun on an elderly man and steal from him in broad daylight — didn't count on a victim exercising his Second Amendment rights and arming himself for protection.

And the crook in question won't have the opportunity to learn from his error in judgment, either.

What happened?

A 77-year-old man who's a retired Chicago firefighter was in the garage of his South Side residence in the 500 block of East 89th Street around 12:24 p.m. Saturday when a vehicle pulled up in the alley and a man got out, WMAQ-TV reported.

The man wasn't asking for directions. Instead he pulled a gun on the elderly man and demanded his property, WFLD-TV reported.

But the elderly man also is a concealed carrier and had no intention of following orders.

Indeed, he pulled out his own gun and shot the would-be robber in the head and chest, police told WFLD, after which he was pronounced dead at the scene. On Sunday, he was identified as Bernard Peterson, the station also said.

What else?

Chicago Police said the elderly man has a valid Firearms Owner Identification Card and a concealed carry license, WFLD said, adding that the Chicago Fire Department confirmed he's a retired firefighter.

Authorities also told the station that the would-be robber's weapon was recovered after the shooting. WFLD also used a tweet from Chicago Police showing the recovered weapon:

Offender is now DOA.

— Chicago Police (@Chicago_Police) 1636227297

Police added in the tweet that the suspect was driving a vehicle that was carjacked the day before — and in a subsequent tweet said the suspect was DOA.

Chicago police told WMAQ that the 77-year-old didn't sustain any injuries and that an investigation into the shooting continues.

How did observers react?

Commenters on the tweet from Chicago police were decidedly happy about the outcome of the attempted robbery:

  • "We need more of this," one commenter said. "Man those torpedoes full speed ahead. Let's get open carry law now. We need to protect ourselves. The damned are going to die."
  • "One more piece of worthless trash off the streets!" another user declared. "One down, 115,000 to go!"
  • "If this would happen more often, Chicago could be a safer city," another commenter wrote. "Kudos to the retired hero."
  • "Feel good story of the day," another user noted.
  • "I love stories with a happy ending," another commenter said.

Crook actually calls 911 after man he tried to rob — a concealed carrier — turns the tables and fires gun at him

A Virginia man remained behind bars Tuesday after police said a concealed carrier he tried to rob at an ATM turned the tables and fired a gun at him, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star reported.

What's more, the crook behind the foiled heist called 911 after getting shot at, the paper said.

What are the details?

The victim was holding his cash in his hand at the Bank of America ATM in the 10300 block of Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania at 9 p.m. Oct. 15 when the suspect approached in a "threatening" manner and hit the victim several times, Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Maj. Troy Skebo told the Free Lance-Star.

But the victim — a concealed weapon permit holder — pulled out his gun and fired several shots at the suspect, Skebo told the paper.

The suspect, who was not hit, ran across Courthouse Road in the direction of Mill Garden South subdivision, the Free Lance-Star reported, adding that the suspect called 911 and reported being shot at while at the ATM.

But authorities determined that the 911 caller matched the description of the robbery suspect at the ATM and was taken into custody, Skebo told the paper.

The victim suffered minor injuries during the incident, the Free Lance-Star reported, adding that the suspect was not injured.

What do we know about the suspect?

Trey Khiry Turner, 24, was charged with attempted robbery and placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond, the paper reported.

Court records indicate Turner was convicted of attempted robbery and using a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with a 2016 incident in Spotsylvania and was ordered to serve three years in prison, the Free Lance-Star reported.
