See it: In apparent gaffe, Biden mentions Congressional Black Caucus during Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute event

In an apparent blunder, President Joe Biden referred to the Congressional Black Caucus while delivering a speech at a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute event.

After taking to the podium, Biden thanked members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. But later during his remarks, he mentioned that his father used to say that all people are entitled to be treated with dignity as well as respect. Then, in an apparent mistake, the president said such values are embodied by the Congressional Black Caucus.

Biden has previously copped to being a "gaffe machine."

Earlier this year during an interview with MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, the president mistakenly referenced part of the Declaration of Independence while erroneously suggesting that he was referring to the Constitution.

He has mistakenly referred to Iraq while speaking about Ukraine.

He made comments during a speech this week and then swiftly made similar comments again during the same speech.

But while Biden has long been known for blunders, some contend that Biden's mental acuity has declined. Already the oldest president in U.S. history, he would be 86 years old by the end of his second term if he gets re-elected in 2024.

Earlier this year, dozens of House Republicans signed a letter to the president, pressing him to take a cognitive test or else drop his re-election bid.

"The American people deserve complete transparency on the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader. Moreover, the United States' national security relies on a cognitively sound Commander in Chief, and it is evident that you do not fit that bill. Therefore, we call on you to either renounce your bid for reelection or submit to a clinically validated cognitive screening assessment and make those results available to the public," the letter stated.

First Mexican-born congresswoman denied membership in Hispanic caucus because she is a Republican

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus denied membership to Rep. Mayra Flores (R-Texas), the first Mexican-born congresswoman, because she is not a Democrat.

What are the details?

Flores reportedly applied for membership in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in early October, months after winning a special election and becoming the first Mexican-born congresswoman. She represents a heavily Hispanic district that borders Mexico.

But those credentials were not enough for membership in the caucus of Hispanic lawmakers.

"As the first Mexican-born American Congresswoman, I thought the Hispanic Caucus would be open in working together," Flores said Wednesday. "This denial once again proves a bias towards conservative Latinas that don’t fit their narrative or ideology."

Sebastian Roa, a caucus spokesperson, confirmed that Flores was denied membership because of her views.

"Rep. Flores’ extreme MAGA values and their attacks on Latinos and our nation’s democracy on January 6 do not align with CHC values," Roa told the Texas Tribune.

The caucus is composed entirely of Democrats, and its bylaws explicitly prohibit Republicans from membership. Decades-old differences between Republicans and Democrats led to the CHC splintering. In 2003, Republicans formed the Congressional Hispanic Conference.

A spokeswoman for Flores told the Texas Tribune that Flores is opening to joining the Congressional Hispanic Conference, but explained she wanted to join the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to work across the aisle with her fellow Hispanic lawmakers.

Anything else?

Democrats have a history of excluding Republican lawmakers from certain caucuses.

For example, the Congressional Black Caucus blocked Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who is black, from joining the caucus last year.

"The sad reality is although the Congressman and those in the CBC share the same race, the (R) behind his name disqualifies him from membership today," a spokesman for Donalds said at the time.

Moreover, former Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) was blocked from joining the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in 2017, though the caucus allowed Curbelo to make a presentation explaining why he deserved to join. Ultimately, he was denied membership.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair urges Biden to raise refugee admissions cap above 125,000 for this fiscal year

Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.) is calling on President Joe Biden to raise the refugee admissions cap for this fiscal year in light of the humanitarian crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine has created an escalating humanitarian crisis. The United States must respond by opening its arms to those seeking safety and security. I ask that you issue an Emergency Presidential Determination raising refugee admissions for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2022, expedite family reunification of Ukrainians in the United States, and do everything possible to rebuild the U.S. Refugee Admission Program," Ruiz said in a letter to Biden.

The refugee cap for fiscal year 2022, which runs through the end of September, is currently set at 125,000.

Ukrainians have been battling to defend their country against Russia's brutal onslaught. Many people have already fled Ukraine because of the chaos and carnage.

"While the headlines are currently focused the war in Ukraine, our country should strengthen its commitment to provide refuge to all people fleeing violence and oppression," the letter said.

"The CHC firmly believes that whether someone is fleeing for their life from a Russian dictator or a drug cartel, the United States should provide the safety and security that refugees need. Our commitment cannot end at this crisis, but instead we must embrace our international commitments and our responsibilities to the vulnerable. Our country cannot only protect one group; we must protect everyone seeking freedom," the letter declared.

Democrats Want To Push Backdoor Immigration Overhaul And Call It ‘The Budget’

While the plan is still in drafting, it would forge a pathway to citizenship for various illegal immigrants, such as farm workers already residing in the U.S. and “Dreamers.”
