FBI says 75-year-old Trump supporter was brandishing a .357 revolver when agents gunned him down
The Federal Bureau of Investigation offered a rationale for shooting and killing a 75-year-old Trump supporter who had allegedly made threats against Democrat politicians on social media.
Craig Robertson was shot outside of his Provo, Utah, home on Wednesday at about 6:15 a.m. as FBI agents were serving a search warrant related to the alleged social media threats.
Initially, the FBI would not divulge details about the shooting except to say that no agents were harmed.
"The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously," the FBI said in a statement at the time. "In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under review by the FBI's Inspection Division. As this is an ongoing matter, we have no further details to provide."
Days later, after much public outcry, the FBI said that Robertson had been armed at the time of the shooting.
“Robertson resisted arrest and as agents attempted to take him into custody, he pointed a .357 revolver at them," read the newest statement.
They offered no other new details and did not indicate whether body-camera footage from the agents captured the altercation.
Robertson had reportedly made specific threats against President Joe Biden just as he was scheduled to visit Utah. In one post, he allegedly wondered whether Utah would become famous “as the place a sniper took out Biden the Marxist."
A neighbor who witnessed the altercation told Deseret News that agents attempted to breach the home's door and then used an explosive device to gain entry.
“(Then) you hear them yell, ‘Shots fired, shots fired. He has a gun!’ And then a whole bunch more shots,” said the neighbor. “They were all shooting at the same time.”
That neighbor said they saw agents carry Robertson's bloodied body out of the home and attempt to render first aid to the man.
