Destructive deer-eating 'super pigs' invade northern US from Canada

Destructive "super pigs" from Canada are beginning to invade the U.S., threatening to add to the billions of dollars in damage already inflicted annually upon the nation by feral swine.

Canadian bacon

Dr. Ryan Brook, lead on the University of Saskatchewan's Canadian Wild Pig Research Project, told Field and Stream earlier this year, "The U.S. has a 400-plus year history with invasive wild pigs, but we didn't have any here until the early 1980s."

"There was a big push to diversify agriculture with species like wild [boars] and ostriches. Wild boars were brought in from Europe to be raised on farms across Canada," said Brook.

The swinish imports from Eurasia, kept both on meat farms and in hunting preserves, were crossbred with domestic pigs, resulting in "super pigs." These monstrosities were not only larger, but hardier and capable of surviving in cold climates.

"For surviving in cold winters, one of the rules of ecology is the bigger the better," said Brook. "Larger-body animals survive the cold better and have better reproduction in those conditions."

After decades of farmers supersizing their bacon, the market for farmed boars crashed in Canada. In the aftermath, some farmers freed their unprofitable hybrids. Other hogs simply escaped.

It didn't take long for the population of feral pigs to skyrocket. After all, they have a short gestation period of only 114 days, an average litter of 4-12 piglets, and their females can get pregnant at 6 months of age.

The wild pigs spread like locusts across the Canadian prairie provinces, covering some 620,000 square miles of territory. The University of Saskatchewan indicated a male hybrid wild pig's territory can be as large as 115.8 square miles in the summer.

These creatures usually weigh between 120 and 250 pounds but can grow up to 400 pounds. They can also run 30 mph.

Brutal Canadian winters toughened up the pigs, which Brook stressed will "feed on anything. They gobble up tons and tons of goslings and ducklings in the spring. They can take down a whitetail deer, even an adult."

"Originally, it was like 'wow, this is something we can hunt.' But it's become clear that they're threatening our whitetail deer, elk, and especially waterfowl. Not to mention the crop damage."

Brook said in a university report, "Wild pigs are so widespread that they are a major challenge to control in Canada, and eradication is only possible with a comprehensive plan to deal with this highly efficient invasive species. In Saskatchewan they are already posing significant risks to agriculture and livestock production. Our mapping of their expanding territory shows just how quickly they are spreading. This is a rapidly emerging crisis."

Extra to devouring crops and anything with a pulse, the wild pigs are also known to carry diseases like African swine fever.

In January, Brook said the hybrid pigs were about to become an American problem, noting pigs had been sighted less than 10 miles away from the border, along which there was nothing to stop them from stampeding in.

A meaty invasion

The Associated Press reported that aerial surveys recently spotted the hybrid pigs on both sides of the Canada-North Dakota border and more making their way from Manitoba to Minnesota.

Gary Nohrenberg, the Minnesota director of Wildlife Services, indicated that he is not yet aware of any wild pigs stealing into Minnesota.

Brook indicated Canada missed its window to eradicate the beasts. For starters, officials would have had to slaughter at least 65% of the population every year just to prevent the population from growing. Even then, there are indications from previous American efforts that such culling efforts simply prompt the hybrid pigs to adapt and hunt at night.

"Nobody should be surprised when pigs start walking across that border if they haven't already," said Brook. "The question is: What will be done about it?"

The U.S. doesn't need more feral hogs, given that it has an estimated 9 million roaming about 36 states already. They reportedly cause $2.5 billion in agricultural losses every year, with a sounder of pigs capable of devouring 10 acres of corn in a single night.

The pigs also release more greenhouse gases than 1 million cars a year, meaning they pose a threat to climate alarmists' anxiety levels as well.

The East Bay Times reported that the Minnesota legislature has asked the state's Department of Natural Resources to prepare to a plan to tackle the invading forces.

It's unclear what this plan will ultimately entail. There are multiple approaches Minnesota could take.

The Duluth News Tribune noted that in Missouri, hunters once were able to go hog wild, shooting as many feral pigs as they could. Now the practice is prohibited. In Wisconsin, residents are asked to report sightings to the state Department of Natural Resources. Texas allows hunters to turn hogs into furry confetti from hot air balloons.

"The only path forward is you have to be really aggressive and you have to use all the tools in the toolbox," said Brook.

'As the sun came up, we started rolling': US military veteran group conducting Florida rescue operations

Floodwaters continue to threaten survivors of Hurricane Ian. Fortunately, government agencies are not alone in the rescue efforts. A group of U.S. military veterans known as Project Dynamo has been hard at work off the coast of Fort Myers, Florida, rescuing people stranded on Sanibel Island.

Bryan Stern, a retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, is co-founder of the search-and-rescue team. He told the AP, "As soon as the sun came up, we started rolling."

With a small flotilla under its command, Project Dynamo — named after the British evacuation of Dunkirk, France, during the Second World War — has rescued over 20 people. Many of the rescuees are reportedly elderly residents whose escape from Sanibel Island was thwarted when Ian washed away the causeway to the mainland.

The training division chief for the Sanibel Fire Department, Tim Barrett, lauded the efforts of the group and like-minded bystanders who have leaped into action. "It sort of restores your view of humanity," he said. "You see people chipping in and they aren't getting paid for it."

Barrett noted that among the rescuers were several whose own homes were obliterated. Nevertheless, "They're still helping other people."

Although presently operating domestically in Florida, Project Dynamo has performed rescue operations internationally and claims to have aided over 8,000 people.

The group rescued three Americans who were trapped in Afghanistan after the Biden administration's disastrous withdrawal. Stern said that the people the group brought home to Virginia and California would otherwise have faced "very terrible" fates.

When it came to rescuing Americans from Ukraine in the early days of the Russian invasion, the group took action when others seemed unwilling. James Judge, a spokesman for the group, told Fox News that "when the Biden administration said they weren't going to do it, it was kind of like, 'Okay, here we go.'"

WFTS reported in June that Project Dynamo rescued nearly 500 people from Mariupol, Ukraine.

In it together

There are other groups buttressing official efforts. Matt Mengel and his friends took to Sanibel Island to help. "We had gasoline. We had jet skis. We had water. We had food and snacks," Mengel told the AP. "And our mission was just to go find them, dead or alive."

There are reportedly at least 68 dead in Florida as a result of Hurricane Ian.

Mengel, whose own home was destroyed, began rescue operations with his compatriots on Friday after first investigating the well-being of a friend the group hadn't heard from. Upon finding that friend safe, they proceeded to look for others they could help and ferry back to the mainland.

In their efforts, Mengel's team aided an elderly couple in waving down a Coast Guard helicopter, reinforced in their effort by Project Dynamo. Mengel indicated his team has made seven rescues so far.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) noted on Sunday that the mobilization of search-and-rescue teams was the largest since the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Extra to the eight Urban Search and Rescue Teams that have been performing search and rescue since last week, nearly 5,000 National Guard troops were also activated on Thursday.

Video: Massive trucker protest takes over Ottawa. Justin Trudeau reportedly moved to secret location ahead of 'Freedom Convoy' rally.

Truckers and protesters showed up in huge numbers as the Freedom Convoy descended upon Ottawa, Ontario. Despite subzero windchill temperatures on Saturday, Canadians mounted a large protest against vaccine mandates. Massive crowds peacefully protested against government overreach near Parliament Hill.

Truckers were protesting an order that went into effect on Jan. 15, requiring unvaccinated Canadian truckers re-entering the country from the U.S. to get tested for COVID-19 and quarantine themselves. There was reportedly a convoy of up to 50,000 Canadian truck drivers who traveled to Canada's capital to protest the vaccine mandates.

The CBC reported that Trudeau left Rideau Cottage early Saturday for security reasons, and was transported to a secret location with his family.

Trudeau's press secretary Ann-Clara Vaillancourt responded, "The Prime Minister is continuing to isolate in the National Capital Region & work remotely. We’ve consulted Ottawa Public Health on appropriate protocols. As always, we do not comment on security matters."

Last week, Trudeau called the trucker convoy a "small fringe minority of people" who are "holding unacceptable views that they are expressing do not represent the views of Canadians who have been there for each other."

There were thousands of protesters, many waving Canadian flags and some were holding signs expressing contempt toward Trudeau.

Some truckers said they plan on continuing their protest against the vaccine mandates, and will sleep in the cabs of their trucks.

In a letter to the truckers, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe pledged to end proof of vaccination policies in the province.

"My government supports your call to end the cross border ban on unvaccinated truckers," Moe said in the statement released on Saturday. "And it is why, in the not too-distant future, our government will be ending our proof of negative test/proof of vaccination policy in Saskatchewan."

Russell Brand, Don Cherry, Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, and Elon Musk have voiced their support of the "Freedom Convoy."

During a rally in Texas on Saturday night, former President Donald Trump delivered an endorsement of the Canadian truckers.

"We want those great Canadian truckers to know that we are with them all the way," Trump said. "They are doing more to defend American freedom than our leaders by far."

More than 85 wildfires are scorching the US West Coast in 'once-in-a-generation event'

More than 85 wildfires are burning through hundreds of thousands of acres up and down the West Coast in California, Oregon, and Washington in what many are calling an unprecedented event, CNN reported early Wednesday.

What are the details?

"We have fires burning in the north part of the state all the way down to the Mexican border, about 800 miles between the furthest distant fires, so we're stretched across the landscape," Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter said of the 25 fires currently burning in California.

Gusty wind conditions and high temperatures in the state are further exacerbating the situation. Authorities warned that the winds could soon drive the fires already burning into "new ferocity."

A similar situation is playing out in Oregon, as thousands of residents have been placed under evacuation orders as fast-moving fires sweep through the state, already scorching 230,000 acres.

On Tuesday, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) issued an emergency declaration in hopes of getting more resources to local responders to battle the fires.

During a news conference, Brown called the situation "unprecedented" and a "once-in-a-generation event."

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) also referred to the situation as "unprecedented." He told reporters that on Monday alone, 330,000 acres had burned in Washington state, which is more than had burned in the state's past 12 fire seasons.

The magnitude of the devastation was especially felt in the small farming town of Maiden, where 80% of the town's buildings were destroyed by a fire.

Inslee also pressed the issue of unnecessary human contribution in causing the fires.

"I just can't reiterate [it enough], we think almost all of these fires were human-caused, in some dimension," the governor said. "If you can avoid being outside for anything that would even cause a spark, I hope people can avoid those conditions."

One fire in California made headlines on Monday after it was reported that the blaze — which ended up scorching 7,300 acres — was the result of a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used during a gender reveal party.

Anything else?

Just how widespread the problem is can be seen in a screenshot of the National Weather Service's homepage.

As of Wednesday morning, huge chunks of the country's West Coast, extending from the Canadian border in the north to the Mexican border in the south, were under "red flag warnings" (shown below in magenta), indicating critical fire conditions.

Image Source: National Weather Service screenshot

Red flag warnings mean that "critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly."

In the warning, the NWS notes that "a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior."
