Teen arrested for stabbing on campus after HS graduation — and violence is caught on video



A male teenager was arrested in connection with a stabbing that occurred on campus after a high school graduation Friday in Daly City, California. Daly City is just minutes south of San Francisco.

The teen was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, police told KTVU-TV.

'We understand this news is deeply upsetting for our students, families, staff, and community.'

The Daly City Police Department told the station that officers responded at 4:30 p.m. for a report of an active fight involving multiple individuals. The stabbing occurred at Westmoor High School, the station added.

Arriving officers found a 21-year-old victim suffering from non-life-threatening stab wounds, KTVU said, adding that the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

A 15-year-old boy was identified as the stabbing suspect and was arrested, the station added.

Police said no other injuries were reported in connection with the fight, KTVU said, adding that officers recovered at the scene the weapon used in the stabbing but did not describe the weapon in detail.

The violence was captured on cellphone video.

Westmoor High School Principal Victor Zou issued a statement saying school officials "are cooperating fully with law enforcement. We understand this news is deeply upsetting for our students, families, staff, and community. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this incident," KTVU said.

Zou's statement didn't indicate whether the suspect is a student but did say the victim has no relationship with the school district, the station added.

KTVU has received videos of violence on campus from separate sources. The chaotic moments of a fight breaking out on an outdoor basketball court are captured. One video shows a person on the ground being attacked by a group and someone coming to their defense. The person who came to the defense is also attacked.

Later in the video, two people who are fighting are pulled apart. One of them appears to be bleeding profusely from their face and torso. By the end of this video, police arrive on the scene and chase people involved in the fight on foot.

Someone can be seen trying to intervene to break up the fight. There are plenty of bystanders, some are wearing their caps and gowns.

Other videos show different angles. One person in the background can be heard saying, "Get these punks out of our school." Others can be heard calling for some type of security intervention.

A 69-year-old Asian man was repeatedly pistol-whipped and robbed of his watch in a broad-daylight attack caught on home surveillance video last week in northern California, KNTV-TV reported.

The mayor of Daly City — where the attack took place — called it "truly shocking," the station added.

Daly City is about 20 minutes southwest of San Francisco, which has seen a huge spike in brazen crime in the last few years. Violence against Asians has risen in San Francisco and all over the Bay Area as well in that period of time.

What are the details?

Video shows the victim struggling with the suspect next to a pickup truck in the 1300 block of Skyline Drive around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, KNTV reported. The assailant hits the victim multiple times with a handgun as he orders the elderly man to give up his watch.

"Gimme the watch!" the crook is heard hollering at the victim as the sound of the gun smacking against the victim's head also is audible. "Take it off!" he also yells at the elderly man, who can be heard crying out.

Soon the crook appears to take the watch from the victim, after which he runs to a waiting red sports car with tinted windows and hops in the passenger seat. The car's driver of then floors it at a dangerously high speed down the residential street.

KNTV said the victim was treated at the scene for his injuries.

The station said no description was immediately available for the suspect who remained at large Friday. However, video showed the suspect appeared to be wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and white sneakers.

Daly City Mayor Rod Daus-Magbual said in a Friday statement in regard to the incident that the city has "zero tolerance for anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander attacks of any kind," KNTV reported.

The mayor added that he's "working closely with our city's management and police department to ensure a thorough investigation," the station said.

'Coward' kicks 84-year-old grandfather in the back in unprovoked attack, knocks him to the ground, runs away



Surveillance video caught the moment an unidentified attacker ran up behind an 84-year-old grandfather, kicked him the back, knocked him to the ground next to his lawnmower, and then ran off Friday.

What are the details?

Salomon Hernandez had just finished mowing his front lawn at his Higate Drive residence in Daly City, California, just before 6 p.m. when the unprovoked attack took place, police told KPIX-TV.

The victim was trying to empty cut grass when a man ran up from behind and jump kicked Hernandez in the back, knocking him to the ground against a wall, the station said.

“I see a little bit of the guy when I turned around," the victim told KPIX. "[He ran] away."

Video shows Hernandez was unable to get himself up, the station said, adding that he stayed on the ground for several minutes until his wife heard him and came over to help him up.

“A lot of pain, lots of pain,” Hernandez noted to KPIX.

Not the first time

He added to the station that this incident represented the second time he was attacked in this manner.

The previous attack took place in September when someone kicked him from behind while he was working on his yard, KPIX said.

The incident six months ago led his kids to set up the surveillance camera, the station said.

“We’re like, ‘Not again!’ We’re angered. We’re surprised. But then we actually finally saw that video," his daughter Diana Cruz explained to KPIX. "It was hard to see, to see my dad on the floor and being attacked like that from behind.

Hernandez at one point during the station's interview pointed to his head and complained of pain there before noting that the mental trauma will remain longer.

The family believes the attacks were targeted and that one person is responsible in both incidents, the station said.

Hernandez told KPIX he has no enemies, has lived in the house for more than 25 years, and has good relationships with all his neighbors.

“Why? What does this guy want from me?” he asked the station.

None of the family members recognized the attacker, KPIX said, but police are hoping someone will. The station reported that the attacker in the surveillance video appeared to be a heavy-set man in his 30s or 40s.

Detectives noted such an attack is very uncommon in Daly City, the station said.

'You’re a coward'

The family has a direct message for the attacker.

“You’re a coward. I’m saying this to your face right now. If you have any guts, you’ll come right now, and you’ll face me," Cruz said defiantly to the culprit, according to KPIX. "I am not afraid of you."

Police are asking neighbors to share with them any surveillance video of the attacker, the station said.
