An Eastern Michigan city is sparking controversy for having the first American police force with Arabic writing on its patch.
Less than a week after the Western Michigan University football team caused a stir by having one of its players take the field with his name written in Arabic on his jersey, a city just west of Detroit and close to the Canadian border announced its police force will also feature the foreign language.
'This new design is another way we continue to celebrate the rich cultures that make our city unique.'
Police in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, boasted in a Facebook post on Wednesday that they have unveiled a new Arabic/English patch for their officers.
"The Dearborn Heights Police Department is proud to share a new 𝙤𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 patch that our officers may wear as part of their uniform," the department wrote.
The patch displays the Michigan seal in the center with "Dearborn Heights Police" written around it in both English and Arabic.
"This patch was created by Officer Emily Murdoch, who designed it to reflect and honor the diversity of our community — especially the many residents of Arabic descent who call Dearborn Heights home," the post continued.

The police department claimed that including the Arabic script was a sign of "unity, respect," and a "shared commitment to service."
"We are proud of Officer Murdoch's creativity and dedication in helping our department better represent the people we serve," the post added. "This new design is another way we continue to celebrate the rich cultures that make our city unique."
Fox 2 Detroit was able to confirm with the department that the patch was indeed optional for officers.
Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) shared an image of the new patch on X and said it was "their goal" to "bring sharia law to America."
"You should've believed them. Pray for Michigan," he wrote.
None of the Republican congressmen from Michigan appeared to make a public statement about the patch.
Dearborn Heights has a Middle Eastern and North African population of 39% as of 2023, Fox 2 Detroit reported. Dearborn, Michigan, its neighbor to the east, reportedly has a similar population, representing about 55%.
The region has long been considered to be a hub for Arabs, with Dearborn Police showing off a Community Policing Center that featured Arabic writing in November 2001, just two months after the September 11th attacks.
Also in 2001, Michigan State Police called the area "a major financial support center for many Mideast terrorist groups."
"Southeast Michigan is known as a lucrative recruiting area and potential support base for international terrorist groups. It is also conceivable that ‘sleeper cells’ may be located in that area of the state," a police report said, according to NBC News.
As well, a 2001 report by the New York Times cited Detroit as having around 300,000 Arabs in the metropolitan area. This included: Palestinians, Iraqis, Yeminis, Syrians, and Lebanese.

And my message to the people of Gaza and oppressed peoples across the world is that there are people here, both young and old, who are going to be willing to fight and are willing to put their lives and everything they can on the line to bring these empires down because they must come down,” he said.
“What he’s saying is that the West is in the way of Islam,” Levin translates, noting the distinction between peaceable Muslims, “who just want to live their lives,” and Islamists, who are “terrorists or terrorist-supporters.”
This latter group will persecute and kill peaceful Muslims as fast as they’ll persecute and kill Christians, he explains.
The unnamed man from Dearborn calling for the fall of Western powers is “an Islamist,” meaning he hates America and Americans and supports terrorism.
And yet — “The Democrat Party keeps pandering to people like this,” says Levin, and it’s because, like Islamists, it also thinks “the West has to be destroyed.”
While they both have different end goals — Marxists hope for the “withering away of the state,” while Islamists hope for “complete control of mankind” — for now, they need each other to keep their visions alive.

Awakened homeowner grabs gun, waits for intruder to open bedroom door. A shoot-out follows — and it's all caught on video.
A Michigan home invasion over the weekend resulted in a shoot-out — and it was all caught on surveillance video, WJBK-TV reported.
It began when two intruders broke into 24-year-old Benjamin Nevers' home in Dearborn Heights on Saturday morning, WXYZ-TV reported.
'I’m kind of glad the guy who shot me is still alive, too. I don’t want to kill nobody.'
Nevers told WJBK he and a friend had returned from a trip to the Bahamas when two suspects appeared on security video breaking into Nevers' residence through a kitchen window and moving around the house.
Nevers' friend was seen on surveillance video lying face down in the living room and being held at gunpoint. WXYZ said the two intruders searched the house for studio equipment and jewelry before ending up at Nevers’ bedroom door.
"Then I woke up, and I was just quick enough to react to grab my gun and cock it, and I just sat there and kind of waited," Nevers told WJBK. "I knew they were going to come to my room."
Surveillance video shows Nevers inside his bedroom with his gun pointed at his bedroom door — and as soon as a gunman comes in, the shoot-out commences.
Nevers told WXYZ the gunman shot him in the foot — but that he fired twice at the gunman, hitting him in the leg.
An exterior camera shows the wounded suspect limping and practically crawling out of the home.
Aftermath
As for Nevers' injuries, he told WJBK that his foot was "completely shattered" and needed "immediate surgery" with "screws and plates." Nevers added to WJBK that he also "got hit in the back."
Nevers added to WJBK that his girlfriend, who was lying in a bed behind him during the exchange of gunfire, also was shot.
"I know she got shot in the back, and it ... traveled up and ... hit her kidney, and I think it’s lodged in her chest right now ... they can’t get the bullet out 'cause it’s too dangerous," he told WJBK. "So I know they are watching her, and it’s going to be a couple more days."
Nevers told WXYZ he believes his large social media following from his days as a party promoter tempted the suspects to target him.
He told WJBK that a bag the suspects tried to steal contained "a bottle of Don Julio" and "a chocolate bar." Nevers added to WJBK that "there was a studio microphone" for the taking and that "these guys did this for nothing."
He also told WJBK that he's "just happy everybody is alive and well. I’m kind of glad the guy who shot me is still alive, too. I don’t want to kill nobody."
Attorney Jim Makowski told WXYZ it "absolutely" was a clear-cut self-defense shooting on Nevers' part: “The homeowner acted completely responsibly. He identified a threat, he armed himself, and when the threat materialized, he opened fire, and it was a good shoot."
Suspect arrested
Phillip Price is facing 21 felony charges for the break-in, including two counts of assault with intent to murder, WXYZ reported, adding that Price remained in custody with no bond.
WXYZ added that police are searching for a second suspect.
