Biden White House considering declaration of a 'national climate emergency' in order to grant itself special powers

The Biden White House is once again entertaining the possibility of conferring itself unprecedented powers to hobble American energy producers and win over leftists, all in the name of changing weather patterns.

Forbes Media chairman Steve Forbes characterized the proposed declaration as a "cowardly way to try to win this election."

Emergency powers then and now

The National Emergencies Act enables the president to activate special powers during a crisis. Since the law went into effect in 1976, it has been invoked scores of times.

When former President Donald Trump was in office, the Brennan Center for Justice, a leftist public policy institute, raised the alarm about the "vast array of obscure presidential powers" the NEA affords presidents in the face of a supposed emergency.

The Brennan Center noted that the emergency powers "cover almost every imaginable subject area, including the military, land use, public health, trade, federal pay schedules, agriculture, transportation, communications, and criminal law."

One statute unlocked following an NEA declaration would enable the president to "suspend a law that prohibits the testing of chemical and biological weapons on unwitting human subjects." Another would allow the president to commandeer radio stations.

Elizabeth Goitein, senior director and expert on presidential emergency powers at the Brennan Center, noted in the Atlantic that "the president is free to use any of them; the National Emergencies Act doesn't require that the powers invoked relate to the nature of the emergency. Even if the crisis at hand is, say, a nationwide crop blight, the president may activate the law that allows the secretary of transportation to requisition any privately owned vessel at sea."

The New York Times noted in 2019 that when it comes to an NEA declaration, it likely doesn't matter if "there is no true emergency" and that as a "matter of legal procedure, facts may be irrelevant."

While leftists, future Biden boosters, and Fox News hosts complained when Trump declared a national emergency to curb illegal immigration and secure the border, some appear less resistant now to an emergency declaration that affords fellow travelers more power.

Fake crisis, real power

In 2022, Biden faced significant pressure from Democratic lawmakers and other radicals to declare a national climate emergency as a means to unilaterally kill federal oil drilling and ramp up so-called clean energy projects.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in July 2022, "The climate emergency is not going to happen tomorrow, but we still have it on the table."

The option is evidently still on the table.

Citing people "familiar with the matter," Bloomberg reported last week that White House officials have renewed discussions about declaring a national climate emergency.

Biden's top advisers would be able to cut back exports of American crude oil just as Iran's oil exports hit a 6-year high and altogether throttle the supply of oil and gas; limit the movement of trains and ships; kill offshore drilling; limit Americans' greenhouse gas emissions; and more.

The Times previously indicated that the regime could also compel domestic industries to produce more renewable energy and transportation technologies and free up taxpayer funds for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fritter away on supposedly green causes.

Advisers apparently figure the unilateral measure would resonate with "climate-minded voters."

Wrecking the economy

Steve Forbes told Fox Business' "The Evening Edit" Thursday that "you're going to pay for it with an even more troubled economy."

The declaration would "give him the power to stop drilling offshore, stop export of crude, ... delay pipelines and the like — just throttle the whole fossil fuel industry even more than they're doing," said Forbes. "What that only does is wreck the economy. It means higher energy prices."

"Just look at Europe. Germany has two to three times the electricity costs times the electricity costs of the U.S. because of the kind of stuff the Biden administration is doing now. They've learned a hard lesson," continued Forbes. "This administration's throwing it all away, all sensible policies away, as a cheap way, a cowardly way to try to win this election."

Forbes appeared somewhat optimistic, suggesting that most young people "will see through it" and understand the declaration would do them harm as well.

El Salvadoran president coolly brushes off Ilhan Omar's election meddling, then flips her critique

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) took a break from Somali politicking Wednesday to call on the Biden administration to meddle in El Salvador's domestic affairs ahead of its national election.

El Salvador's hugely popular president thanked the radical congresswoman for sparing him from her endorsement ahead of his likely re-election Sunday. After indicating precisely what her "attacks" meant to him, President Nayib Bukele flipped the script on Omar and other concern-mongers.

A 'threat to democracy' supported by 90% of voters

Bukele, 42, has transformed El Salvador from a blood-soaked gangland into a nation with the second-lowest homicide rate in the Americas — all inside a five-year window.

There were 51 homicides per 100,000 in 2018, the year prior to Bukele's initial election. The homicide rate fell to 7.8 in 2022 under his leadership, such that El Salvador saw fewer homicides that year (495) than were reported in Chicago during the same period (695). The homicide rate in El Salvador last year was reportedly 2.4 per 100,000.

To achieve this end, Bukele's administration has taken extreme measures, admittedly overstepping and cracking down on some civil rights. His administration has also allegedly thrown over 2% of the adult population behind bars, most of whom are supposedly suspected or known gang members.

Bukele's crackdown on crime, selective suspension of civil liberties, and warrantless arrests have earned him the loathing of both Democrats and liberal publications — the Economist said he was poised to "become Latin America's first Millennial dictator." However, his ability to bring relative peace to El Salvador has also won him the support of his countrymen.

According to Reuters, Bukele's approval ratings hover around 90%. The South China Morning Post indicated that a January 2024 opinion poll from the University of Central America's Public Opinion Institute indicated 82% of voters supported Bukele. By way of contrast, the latest Economist/YouGov poll put President Joe Biden's disapproval rating at 54%.

Tyler Mattiace, Americas researcher at Human Rights Watch, characterized Bukele as "one of the biggest risks for human rights and for democracy that we see in Latin America right now" but acknowledged the president is popular because of his perceived efficacy.

"Bukele is incredibly popular," said Mattiace. "We see a growing number of people in countries across Latin America who are supporting this kind of authoritarian populism because they believe that it could be the only way to address rising levels of violence."

Bukele's approach might be appealing to those nations that observed the utter failure of leftist Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's "hugs not bullets" approach.

Omar gets involved in another foreign election

Just days after supporting the re-election of Said Abdullahi Deni, head of the northeastern Somali state of Puntland, Rep. Ilhan Omar led other leftist Democrats in urging Secretary of State Antony Blinken to "address ongoing threats to democracy and human rights in El Salvador."

"President Bukele is amassing power and establishing authoritarian rule in El Salvador. The Members of Congress are urging the State Department to review its relationship with El Salvador and use America's diplomatic influence to defend democratic values," said a statement accompanying the letter.

Democrats and the liberal media have in recent weeks increasingly conflated democracy and its well-being with electoral results they find preferable.

"President Bukele has also, during his first term, overseen the militarized harassment of the legislature, a significant erosion of judicial independence, and the de facto criminalization of civil society," said the letter. "Much of this persecution has been done with the active complicity of El Salvador's judicial system."

While Omar's letter suggested that "it is not the place of the United States government to determine who is eligible to run for President in a foreign country, nor to pick winners," she nevertheless suggested that the United States lean on El Salvador ahead of its election.

The letter tells Blinken to

  • "restrict security assistance and other support for the Salvadoran police and military";
  • rework aid mechanisms to ensure direct funding to NGOs and "Salvadoran civil society" rather than through intermediaries;
  • denounce the legal mechanism by which Bukele has curbed gang violence; and
  • send "an unequivocal message on the importance of respecting constitutional and democratic norms."

"The State Dept must review its relationship with El Salvador and defend democratic values," added Omar. "The Salvadoran people deserve free and fair elections without fear of repression."

The congresswoman's post was quickly slapped with community notes highlighting that Bukele was democratically elected with a clear majority in 2019; his party secured a majority in the legislative assembly; and a "president can be re-elected in El Salvador if in the 6 months prior to taking office he was not in charge."

Bukele thanks Omar

Bukele responded to Omar Wednesday on X, writing, "We are HONORED to receive your attacks, just days before OUR election."

"I would be very worried if we had your support," added Bukele. "Thank you."

In addition to retweeting Omar's post, ostensibly as a badge of honor, Bukele turned Omar's critique around, writing, "I think the United States should have free and fair elections."

The El Salvadoran president continued trolling Omar, sharing a critic's comment noting, "Democrats ask to interfere in El Salvador's elections so that they are 'clean.' The joke tells itself."

Bukele also shared a comment stating, "Considering recent history, perhaps [Bukele] could send some Salvadorian electoral officials to the US to help ensure free and fair elections."

Milena Mayorga, El Salvador's ambassador to the U.S., added, "Then they say they do not interfere in our elections."

Soon, others piled on, ridiculing Omar and celebrating Bukele's response.

Former Rep. Mayra Flores Vallejo (R-Texas) wrote, "We need more Presidents like [Bukele] in the world. @Ilhan doesn't represent America. She has not love or respect for our country."

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) noted that Bukele "is bringing peace and prosperity to El Salvador. He's doing a fantastic job of ridding their streets of violent cartel thugs and fighting for his people!"

Roger Kimball, editor and publisher of the New Criterion, stressed that Bukele, "along with Javier Millei, is the most impressive leader in the Western hemisphere."

Biden says Trump threatens electoral 'right to choose' after Biden official's group gets Trump taken off ballot in Colorado

A Biden official's Democrat-aligned group successfully got President Joe Biden's top rival removed from the ballot in Colorado ahead of the 2024 election. The 81-year-old president wasted no time justifying this limit on voter choice, regurgitating familiar alarmist rhetoric Wednesday night about former President Donald Trump posing a threat to democracy.

Biden's remarks were not well received.

The geriatric president has since been accused of "gaslighting," fascism, and hypocrisy over his projection of anti-democratic sentiments onto his now-verboten political opponent — an opponent who has been leading in the polls in several critical swing states

Projection

Biden took to X Wednesday to share an apparent justification for Trump's disqualification in Colorado.

"Trump poses many threats to our country: The right to choose, civil rights, voting rights, and America's standing in the world," wrote the president, whose disapproval rating is 58% according to the latest Quinnipiac poll.

"But the greatest threat he poses is to our democracy," continued Biden. "If we lose that, we lose everything."

— (@)

Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton wrote on X, "Biden tries to justify abusing Trump's civil rights and rigging the election through political prosecutions and kangaroo court proceedings. Our Republic is tottering because of Biden's abuses."

Blaze TV host Mark Levin noted, "The Biden campaign is well underway: dehumanize Trump by using the fascist/Marxist tactic of dehumanizing your opponent and repeating the big lie that Trump is Hitler, block Trump from ballot access in blue states while claiming it is he who opposed democracy, drain Trump of personal and campaign resources through civil and criminal lawsuits aka lawfare, keep Trump in court after court to prevent him from running a proper campaign, ultimately convict him of some phony crime and sentence him to prison."

Mollie Hemingway, editor in chief at the Federalist, responded, "Disgusting rhetoric from the president, showing his complete support for his administration's authoritarian attack on Republicans, and his support for other Democrat Party attacks on the republic."

"The greatest threat to democracy is the person tied or leading me in current polls," wrote Stephen Miller, contributing editor at the Spectator.

While Biden has been hyping this supposed threat for well over a year, Trump now appears to be recycling the accusation.

During a speech Saturday in New Hampshire, Trump said, "It's no wonder Biden and the far-left lunatics are desperate to stop us by any means necessary. They're willing to violate the U.S. Constitution at levels never seen before in order to win. They will do anything to win. They'll do whatever they have, whatever they can. And remember, this: Joe Biden is a threat to democracy. He's a threat."

Following Biden's Wednesday accusation, Trump responded on Truth Social, writing, "CROOKED JOE BIDEN IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!!"

While both candidates have issued the same accusation, the big anti-democratic maneuver this week was actully the handiwork of an outfit run by an official in Biden's administration.

Biden official helps eliminate choice

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is a partisan activist group that touts itself as a government watchdog. It was optimized as an attack dog for the Democratic Party by Media Matters founder David Brock ahead of the 2016 election.

The current president and CEO of CREW is Noah Bookbinder. CREW, under Bookbinder's leadership, brought the case in Colorado against Trump. Beyond CREW's partisan nature, there is a direct link between the anti-democratic maneuver in Colorado and the Biden administration.

The Daily Caller highlighted how Bookbinder has served as a member of the Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Advisory Council since March 2022. The group has met multiple times, including in September 2023, taking up issues ranging from so-called "disinformation" to innovation.

Bookbinder formerly served as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice's public integrity section and as chief counsel for criminal justice for the Senate Judiciary Committee. Federal Election Commission records show he repeatedly dumped cash into Democratic causes, especially former President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

DHS Secretary Mayorkas telegraphed the importance of Bookbinder's appointment in a March 17, 2022, statement, noting he and the 32 other appointees "have agreed to serve our country as members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council at a critically important time not only for the nation, but also for the world."

The HSAC "leverages the experience, expertise, and national and global connections of the HSAC membership to provide [Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas] real-time, real-world and independent advice to support decision-making across the spectrum of homeland security operations," according the DHS site.

Following the ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court, which is entirely composed of Democratic appointees, Bookbinder said the decision his outfit helped secure was "not only historic and justified, but is necessary to protect the future of democracy in our country."

"Our Constitution clearly states that those who violate their oath by attacking our democracy are barred from serving in government," added Bookbinder.

Like Biden, it appears Bookbinder figures democracy's best hopes are anti-democratic measures.

The Daily Caller indicated that neither the DHS nor CREW responded to requests for comment.
