19-year-old son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki died suddenly in UC Berkeley dorm: 'We are all devastated'

The 19-year-old son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki died suddenly at a UC Berkeley dorm earlier this week.

A freshman student was found unresponsive on Tuesday afternoon inside a dormitory at UC Berkeley’s Clark Kerr Campus. Around 4:23 p.m., Berkeley Fire Department said they were "attempting life-saving measures" on the student.

Sadly, the Berkeley Fire Department pronounced the individual dead shortly after responding to the emergency.

Authorities did not release a cause of death. UC Berkeley campus police said there were no signs of foul play.

Adam Ratliff, a spokesperson for UC Berkeley, said counselors created "healing spaces" for students to deal with the victim who suddenly died.

Days later, the student who died suddenly was identified as Marco Troper – the son of the former YouTube CEO.

Troper's grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, remembered her grandson as "the most kind, loving, smart, fun and beautiful human being."

In a Facebook post, the grandmother said her family is "devastated beyond comprehension" by the sudden death.

"Marco's life was cut too short. And we are all devastated, thinking about all the opportunities and life experiences that he will miss and we will miss together," Wojcicki wrote. "Marco, we all love you and miss you more than you will ever know."

Wojcicki believes her grandson ingested a drug that killed him suddenly.

The distraught grandmother told SFGate, "He ingested a drug, and we don’t know what was in it. One thing we do know, it was a drug."

“We want to prevent this from happening to any other family,” she said.

"Tragedy is very hard to sustain," Wojcicki told the outlet. "It makes you want to hide in a closet and never come out, but I think the main thing is that we need to push forward to see what we can do to help other people so there won’t be any other kids who end up like Marco."

Troper was the son of Susan Wojcicki – who served as the CEO of YouTube from 2014 to 2023.

Marco was one of Wojcicki's five children with her husband, Dennis Troper.

Marco Troper was in the second semester of his freshman year in the university’s College of Letters & Science.

Officials at UC Berkeley said the death is under investigation.

Aspiring world-class dancer, 25, dies after eating mislabeled cookies; sudden death said to be '100% preventable and avoidable'

An aspiring world-class dancer died suddenly after eating cookies that were mislabeled. The attorney for the deceased professional dancer said her sudden death was "100% preventable and avoidable."

Órla Baxendale moved to New York City from the United Kingdom six years ago "to pursue her dream career as a world-class dancer," according to a statement released by the attorney representing the grieving family.

However, tragedy struck on Jan. 11, when she suffered a fatal allergic reaction to eating cookies that were mislabeled.

Baxendale was reportedly performing in Connecticut, where she consumed a cookie purchased from a Stew Leonard's grocery store.

Baxendale allegedly suffers from a severe nut allergy, so, she is said to have checked the ingredients of the cookie before she ate it.

"Made sure there wasn't anything in terms of peanuts on the label. There wasn't, so safely, she thought, she had a bite or two of the cookie, and within a minute started to go into anaphylactic shock," said Marijo Adimey — an attorney representing the family.

Baxendale purportedly ate vanilla Florentine cookies from Stew Leonard's — which are said to have peanuts in them.

On Thursday, Stew Leonard's — which is working with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection — announced that approximately 500 Florentine cookies sold had been recalled.

The cookies were allegedly only sold between Nov. 6 and Dec. 31, 2023, at the Stew Leonard’s grocery stores in Danbury and Newington, Connecticut.

"The cookies contain undeclared peanuts and eggs," Stew Leonard's said in a statement. "People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts or eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. One death has been reported that may be associated with the mislabeled product."

Stew Leonard Jr. said, "We're just devastated, very sad. It was a holiday cookie... we bought it from an outside supplier, and unfortunately this supplier changed the recipe and started going from soy nuts to peanuts."

Baxendale's allergy to peanuts was so severe that she allegedly "carried EpiPens wherever she went."

"Órla's family, devastated by this unimaginable loss, wishes to express their gratitude for the outpouring of support and tributes from around the world," the lawyers said, according to WNBC-TV. "She was a radiant and brave soul who pursued her dreams relentlessly, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her."

"Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family, friends, and the global dance community mourning the loss of this extraordinary individual," the statement added.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Manhattan said in a statement on Thursday:

The Ailey School is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of alumna Órla Baxendale. Órla was born and raised in Manchester UK and moved to New York in 2018 to join the Ailey family as a Scholarship student. Since then, she had become an integral part of the New York dance world, pursuing her passion, shining her bright light, and doing what she loved most. She danced with numerous companies and choreographers, most recently as a member of MOMIX. Her loss will be profoundly felt by her friends, colleagues, and all who knew her. We will remember her for her joyful spirit and boundless talent. Our thoughts are with her family at this devastating time.

The family said, "She was a radiant and brave soul who pursued her dreams relentlessly, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her."

Officials from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and the Connecticut Department of Public Health are investigating the fatal incident.

DCP Food Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli stated, "This is a heartbreaking tragedy that should never have happened. DCP Food Investigators are working hard with the Department of Public Health, local health departments, officials in New York State and New Jersey, the Food and Drug Administration and Stew Leonard's to determine how this error happened and prevent a similar tragedy from occurring in the future. Our condolences go out to the family affected by this incident."

"Correct labeling so that people who have food allergies can appropriately protect themselves is of utmost importance. I am devastated to learn of this incident and will work with partners to ensure that we can protect people with food allergies. I cannot stress enough the importance of food allergy awareness so that an avoidable tragedy like this doesn't happen again," said DPH Commissioner Dr. Manisha Juthani. "We will continue to work with all our partners — including restaurants and retailers — to provide education on the dangers of food allergens so that best practices are being followed for the safety of the residents of Connecticut."

Adimey said, "Her death was completely, 100% preventable and avoidable. It's why packaging is so important. Her death was completely, 100% preventable and avoidable. It's why packaging is so important."

"Tim’s wife Stacy, who is one of the nicest women you’ll ever meet, is very sick with pancreatic cancer. Recently, Tim was diagnosed with a very serious, a very aggressive form of brain cancer."

He owns the Red Sox record for innings pitched (3,006) and most starts (430). Wakefield is regarded as one of the best knuckleball pitchers of all time.

Wakefield was the recipient of the 2010 Roberto Clemente Award recognizing "extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

Paqui pulls 'One Chip Challenge' snack off shelves following teen's death, 6 elementary school students needing medical attention

The manufacturer behind the viral One Chip Challenge announced that it would be removing the ultra-spicy tortilla chips from retail stores in the wake of the sudden death of a teenager after eating the fiery snack food.

Last week, a Massachusetts teen died after eating a One Chip Challenge snack. As TheBlaze previously reported, 14-year-old Harris Wolobah participated in the One Chip Challenge, a popular internet trend of people eating a super spicy tortilla chip made by Paqui. The challenge is to eat the peppery chip, but to hold out from eating or drinking anything to douse the spiciness of the popular snack food. The challenge has existed since 2016.

Wolobah allegedly consumed the spicy chip while at Doherty High School in Worcester last Friday. The sophomore high school student went to the nurse after a severe stomachache. The boy was picked up by his mother and taken home.

Later that day, the teenager was found unconscious at home and was rushed to the hospital – where he died suddenly.

The teen's official cause of death has not been confirmed, and the results of an autopsy by the Massachusetts Medical Examiner's Office aren't expected for a few weeks.

The boy's father, Amos Wolobah, said his son had "no pre-existing condition" to his knowledge.

Following the sudden death of the teen, Paqui issued a statement to WBZ-TV: "We are deeply saddened by the death of Harris Wolobah and express our condolences to the family. While the Paqui One Chip Challenge is intended for adults only, we have seen an increase in teen usage of the product."

The snack food purveyor announced that it was removing the One Chip Challenge chips from stores.

"We care about all of our consumers and have made the decision to remove the product from shelves," a Paqui spokesperson said on Thursday. "The product's label clearly states it is not for children or anyone sensitive to spicy foods or who has food allergies, is pregnant, or has underlying health conditions. We are actively working with our retailers and are offering refunds for any purchases of our single-serve one chip challenge product."

Customers looking for a refund for the product can call 1-866-528-6848.

The One Chip Challenge tortilla chips are made of two of the hottest peppers in the world: the Carolina Reaper and the Naga Viper.

According to NBC News, "The spiciness of chili peppers is measured on the Scoville scale, which calculates the heat units in a given pepper. Carolina Reapers score around 1.7 million Scoville heat units and Naga Viper peppers around 1.4 million. A jalapeño pepper, by contrast, rates up to 8,500 Scoville heat units."

The chips are wrapped individually and sold in packaging shaped like a coffin with a skull on the front of the box.

On Wednesday, six elementary school students in Florida needed medical attention after coming in contact with the One Chip Challenge snacks.

D'Anton Patrick told WPTV that his 12-year-old son purchased One Chip Challenge snacks at a Walgreens in Boynton Beach, Florida. The boy's mother found them and threw them in the garbage. However, his 10-year-old daughter retrieved them from the garbage and brought them to her elementary school.

She shared the spicy snack with fellow students at Forest Park Elementary School. After coming in contact with the One Chip Challenge, six children required medical attention at the school.

Patrick's daughter was suspended from school for a week.

Paqui is owned by Amplify Snack Brands – which was purchased by the Hershey Company for $1.6 billion in 2018, according to PennLive.

Lance Reddick reportedly died from heart and artery disease, 'John Wick' star's lawyer disputes cause of death: 'Lance was the most physically fit person I've ever known ... ate as if a dietician was monitoring his every meal'

"John Wick" star Lance Reddick died suddenly last month in his Los Angeles home at the age of 60. The Hollywood actor's cause of death was reportedly unveiled on Thursday.

On March 17, Reddick reportedly collapsed in the backyard of his home in the Studio City neighborhood. Reddick's wife, Stephanie, found him unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead that day.

At the time of Reddick’s sudden death, the actor's spokesperson informed the public that "The Wire" star had died of natural causes, but did not elaborate.

On Thursday, TMZ reported that Reddick died of ischemic heart disease and atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.

The American Heart Association defines ischemic heart disease as heart problems "caused by narrowed heart arteries," which limits the amount of blood and oxygen that reaches the heart muscle. The health condition can cause a heart attack. Ischemic heart disease – also known as coronary heart disease or coronary artery disease – can be "caused by a blood clot or by constriction of the blood vessel," according to the National Institutes of Health.

The NIH notes that ischemic heart disease is most often caused by a buildup of plaque, called atherosclerosis.

The Mayo Clinic states that atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis caused by the "buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in and on the artery walls."

"This buildup is called plaque," the medical organization added. "The plaque can cause arteries to narrow, blocking blood flow. The plaque can also burst, leading to a blood clot."

TMZ claimed to have obtained the late actor's death certificate — which said Reddick was cremated.

However, Reddick's lawyer has disputed the actor's cause of death cited on the death certificate.

"I have represented Lance Reddick for many years and continue to represent his wife Stephanie," attorney James Hornstein told People magazine. "The coroner statement on the death certificate is not a result of an autopsy. No autopsy was performed on Lance."

Hornstein stressed, "To my knowledge, no medical examination of Lance during his lifetime ever indicated such conditions."

"Lance was the most physically fit person I've ever known," Hornstein continued. "He exercised daily at his home gym, including extensive cardio work, and the availability of gym facilities was a contractual requirement for his work away from home. He ate as if a dietician was monitoring his every meal. The information appearing on the death certificate is wholly inconsistent with his lifestyle."

The statement concluded, "On behalf of Stephanie Reddick, the death certificate information is not corroborated and is inconsistent with the facts known to the family."

Reddick had been actively promoting "John Wick: Chapter 4" right before he suddenly died. Reddick had appeared in every "John Wick" movie as Continental Hotel concierge Charon.

During the "John Wick: Chapter 4" premiere in Los Angeles on March 20, Reddick's co-stars wore blue ribbons to pay tribute to the departed actor.

Keanu Reeves told Deadline at the premiere, "Lance was a beautiful person, a special artist [and] a man of grace and dignity [with] such a passion for his craft. And to have had the chance to work with him over the 10 years and four films [in the franchise] is something that is very special to me."

Director Chad Stahelski said of Reddick, "When someone’s both a mentor and they’re working for you, they’re teaching you as you learn. I had him in my life for 10 years. That’s literally a gift. Lance was a great guy and a great human."

Reddick had a prolific acting career, appearing in 112 TV shows and movies such as "Oz," "Bosch," "Fringe," "The Blacklist," "Godzilla Vs. Kong," "Numbers," "Law & Order: SVU," "CSI: Miami," and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

At the time of his death, Reddick was involved in several projects. He was cast as Zeus in the Disney+ series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," was set to play a major role in the "White Men Can't Jump" remake, and was slated to reprise his Charon character in the "John Wick" spinoff "Ballerina."

Reddick's wife, Stephanie Reddick, said of her husband's death, "Lance was taken from us far too soon. Thank you for all your overwhelming love, support, and beautiful stories shared on these platforms over the last day. I see your messages and can't begin to express how grateful I am to have them. And to the thousands of Destiny players who played in special tribute to Lance, thank you. Lance loved you as much as he loved the game."

Actor Jansen Panettiere dies suddenly at 28, brother of Hayden Panettiere 'sounded okay' before unexpected death

New details have been released about the sudden death of Hollywood actor Jansen Panettiere.

Panettiere died shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday at his apartment in Nyack, New York.

An unresponsive Panettiere was found by three of Jansen's friends: Benjamin Brown, Joe Fails, and Lars Arianti. The friends grew "concerned" when Panettiere didn't show up at a prearranged meeting the night before. The friends went to Pannettiere's home and found the actor "sitting upright in a chair unresponsive." The friends called 911 and attempted to revive Panettiere with CPR.

The initial report from the Orangetown Police Department said officers entered the apartment to find an "unresponsive male with CPR in progress." Police arrived as Brown was performing CPR on Panettiere, who was lying on his back on the living room floor.

According to Fox News, "Panettiere was reportedly not breathing and was cold to the touch with lividity."

Panettiere, 28, was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m. on Sunday by a responding EMTs at the actor's apartment.

Alan "Skip" Panettiere, Jansen's father, reportedly told EMTs that he talked to Jansen "via telephone the night before" and he "sounded okay."

Officers noted in the police report that "there were no obvious signs of trauma observed."

Orangetown Police Sgt. Peter Maher said, "As part of this ongoing investigation we are awaiting an official determination of the cause of death from the Rockland County Medical Examiner."

There were five lines of the police report that were redacted.

Panettiere's cause of death was not immediately known. An investigation into his sudden death has been launched.

Catherine Michie, the reported girlfriend of Jansen, paid tribute to Panettiere.

"I met you only a year ago, but you have been my best friend and biggest fan," Michie wrote on Instagram. "I will never forget the first time I saw your face and the first things you said to me. Words cannot express the pain of knowing I won’t hear your laugh again."

"I hope you find peace, and I’m sorry I wasn’t there when you needed me most," she continued. "The world is better because you were in it. I know we will paint together again someday. I’ll always be your sugarpop. Someone wake me up and tell me this is a dream."

Like his celebrity sister Hayden Panettiere, Jansen began acting at a young age. Jansen started acting in 2002 and had 43 acting credits to his name.

Jansen had a recurring role as the character "Truman X" in the animated TV series "The X's" on Nickelodeon. Panettiere also appeared in "The Walking Dead," "Ice Age: The Meltdown," "Even Stevens," and "Perfect Game." Most recently, Jansen appeared in the 2022 holiday movie "Love and Love Not."

Hayden and Jansen appeared together in the 2004 TV movie "Tiger Cruise" and in the "Racing Stripes" animated TV show in 2005.

Jansen turned to painting after suffering "terrible anxiety and depression."

Jansen's website states, "After spending time in L.A. as an adult he was ridden with terrible anxiety and depression; this period in his life eventually produced a spiritual clarity that drove him to start painting his problems, one by one."

Jansen is survived by his older sister and their parents.

Former Alabama star running back Ahmaad Galloway dies suddenly at 42

Former Alabama star running back Ahmaad Galloway died suddenly this week at the age of 42.

Galloway was an eighth-grade English teacher at Compton-Drew Middle School in St. Louis, Missouri. When Galloway unexpectantly did not show up for work, the school contacted authorities. Police conducted a welfare check and found the former football star dead in his apartment on Monday.

Compton-Drew Middle School principal Susan Reid told WVTM-TV, "Ahmaad was always on time, very responsible, so we knew something might be wrong. There wasn't anything disrupted at Ahmaad’s apartment, so we are thinking that it could have been a medical issue."

"The medical examiner is working to find out how Ahmaad died," Reid said of Galloway's sudden death. "The family is coming together from different parts of the country before deciding on funeral arrangements."

Galloway's official cause of death was not revealed as of yet.

Galloway is survived by his two children, Austin and Aubrey.

Reid said the door to Galloway’s classroom would be kept shut out of respect.

Kimberley Slaughter, Galloway’s sister, said of her brother, "Ahmaad was always quiet and humble. My brother loved football growing up and later loved his children Austin and Aubrey."

Galloway's cousin, Monaco Houston, revealed, "Growing up he always said that he was going to reach the NFL, and he did. He had a quiet smile – he was very shy. As he grew, he was always great with kids – he was loved very much."

Former Crimson Tide linebacker Marvin Constant said, "We talked frequently about life, not football. We talked just a week ago and he sounded great. We have been very close since 2002 when we spent time together rehabbing our knee injuries."

Former Alabama offensive lineman Griff Redmill said, "When Ahmaad arrived at Bama, he was humble, yet mature beyond his years. He was mature and very put together — I knew right away that he was a person that could be my friend for life."

The Tennessee native played football at the University of Alabama for four years. Between 1999 and 2002, Galloway racked up 1,830 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns for the Crimson Tide. However, Galloway suffered a season-ending knee injury in his senior year that limited him to only four games.

Despite the disappointing senior season, Galloway was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 2003 NFL Draft. Galloway's previous knee injury sidelined him in his first year in the NFL.

Upon recovering from his injury, Galloway played for the Scottish Claymores in the NFL Europe league. Galloway was traded to the San Diego Chargers, but never played a down in the NFL. Galloway last played professional football in 2005 with the Frankfurt Galaxy in Europe.

17-year-old Wyoming basketball player dies suddenly after 'freakish medical situation'

A 17-year-old Wyoming basketball player died suddenly after a medical event, according to local reports.

Max Sorenson died unexpectedly at his home in Gillette on Dec. 26. He was pronounced dead at Campbell County Memorial Hospital.

Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem told the Cowboy State Daily that the teen's sudden death would not be investigated as a suicide, homicide, or caused by the use of illegal drugs.

An autopsy of the junior high school student was being conducted in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Wallem said preliminary findings show that Sorenson suddenly died from peritonitis.

The Mayo Clinic explains that peritonitis "happens when the thin layer of tissue inside the abdomen becomes inflamed." Peritonitis can be caused by infection by bacteria – typically when someone has liver disease or kidney disease. Other health conditions that cause peritonitis are liver cirrhosis, appendicitis, stomach ulcers, diverticulitis (inflammation of pouches in the digestive tract), Crohn's disease, and pancreatitis. Peritonitis can also be caused by a "rupture, inside an organ in the abdomen."

Wallem told the Cowboy State Daily, "We are assuming it’s (from) an injury related to a sporting event."

The coroner said he is "focusing on the injury in the sporting event as the cause of peritonitis," but added that if the determination isn't supported by medical evidence, then "we will continue to look at other answers."

Wallen said that additional tests by a forensic pathologist were being conducted.

Sorenson's obituary said the 17-year-old died "due to complications from injuries sustained playing basketball."

"Max had an incredible work ethic and was very disciplined. His focus was evidenced by his achievements at school, on the basketball court, at church and in his social activities," the obituary read. "Even more important than those successes were his welcoming smile, kind eyes, curly locks and loving personality, which made friendship with him easy and comfortable and was felt by everyone."

His parents said he was a "smart, hard-working student, he maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA." Max also played golf, and was a wakesurfer and wakeboarder.

"Max loved his savior and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He attended early-morning seminary and served as the bishop’s first assistant in his Gillette ward as well as other leadership positions in the church," his parents said.

"Max loved basketball and in particular he loved his teammates, coaches, and the chance to travel to various locations to play," the obituary continued. "He was a member of the varsity basketball team at Thunder Basin High School and looked forward to helping the Bolts to a repeat Wyoming state championship in 2023."

Sorenson was a 6'3" guard weighing 175 lbs. who played on the Thunder Basin High School basketball team.

The Thunder Basin boys basketball team paid tribute to the teen who tragically died.

Thunder Basin High School basketball coach Rory Williams said, "I'm not going to remember Max as the basketball player. I'm going to remember Max as the kindest young man I’ve ever been around. He was just so genuine, authentic; his personality was contagious."

Williams said Sorenson's sudden death was a "freakish medical situation."

During the recent Hoop City Classic basketball tournament, the Thunder Basin High School boys basketball team honored Sorenson by wearing his #3 jersey. The Harrisburg High School boys basketball team also paid tribute to Max by wearing Sorenson's #3.

'Eight is Enough' star Adam Rich dead at 54

Hollywood actor Adam Rich is dead at age 54.

Rich reportedly died at his Los Angeles home on Saturday. He was best known for his child acting role as Nicholas Bradford on the "Eight is Enough" TV show starring actor Dick Van Patten that began in 1977.

Danny Deraney, Rich's Hollywood representative, released a statement announcing the actor's death.

"Adam was simply a wonderful guy,” Deaney said. "He was kind, generous and a warrior in the fight against mental illness."

"Adam did not have an ounce of ego," the tribute continued. "He was unselfish and always looked out for those he cared about, which is why many people who grew up with him feel like part of their childhood gone, and sad today. He really was America’s little brother."

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the celebrity death. Police say no foul play was involved in Rich's death.

Rich's cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Besides starring in five seasons of ABC's "Eight is Enough," Rich was a Hollywood actor for nearly 30 years.

Rich first appeared in the 1970s action television series "The Six Million Dollar Man." He also appeared on "The Love Boat," "Fantasy Island," "CHiPs," "The City," "Small Wonder," "3-2-1," "The Devil and Max Devlin," "Gun Shy," "St. Elsewhere," "Silver Spoons," and a voice role in the animated series "Dungeons & Dragons."

Rich, born in Brooklyn on Oct. 12, 1968, appeared in a 1993 episode of "Baywatch."

Rich's last significant role was playing himself in the 2003 David Spade comedy movie "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star."

Rich nearly died from a valium overdose in 1989, according to Variety.
