Intruder breaks into home, grabs kitchen knives, tries to stab resident who uses wheelchair. But gun-toting homeowner intervenes and opens fire.

A male intruder broke into an Atlanta home just after 11 p.m. Wednesday, and after entering the Dahlia Avenue residence through a window, police said he grabbed two kitchen knives, WAGA-TV reported.

What happened next?

Investigators told the station the intruder then allegedly entered another room and tried to stab a resident who uses a wheelchair.

But the homeowner intervened in the attempted attack on the disabled resident — and armed himself with something a bit more powerful than a pair of kitchen knives.

Yes, the homeowner had exercised his Second Amendment rights and had a gun at the ready — and wasted no time using it, either.

WAGA noted that the homeowner opened fire on the intruder, shooting him in the stomach and arm.

What happened to the intruder?

The station said paramedics rushed the injured intruder to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was in stable condition and undergoing surgery.

Investigators were waiting at the hospital to question the suspect following his surgery, WAGA reported.

According to WGCL-TV, the suspect has been identified as Tyrell Jamal Johnson. Johnson, 36, was charged with burglary and will be taken to the Fulton County Jail once he's released from the hospital, Patch reported, citing police.

Johnson remained in the hospital Thursday morning, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.

Johnson is expected to survive his injuries, WGCL noted, adding that it appears Johnson also was arrested in 2017 for aggravated assault (family violence).

What happened to the homeowner and disabled resident?

The homeowner told detectives he didn't know the intruder and has no idea why his house was targeted, WAGA reported, adding that neither the homeowner nor the disabled resident suffered any injuries.

VIDEO: Scumbags rob man in wheelchair in broad daylight — and hit him, throw him from chair to sidewalk

Talk about preying on the most vulnerable.

Surveillance video caught the moment when a pair of male suspects stole $100 and a cellphone from a wheelchair-bound man on a sidewalk in the Bronx on Sunday, WABC-TV reported.

What are the details?

Video shows one suspect dressed in black wheeling the 36-year-old victim from the middle of 3rd Avenue and then upon the sidewalk.

With that, the second suspect wearing a white shirt also approaches the victim, and then both suspects converge upon the helpless man.

Soon the suspect wearing the white shirt begins walking away from the victim and down the sidewalk toward the surveillance camera; at that point the suspect dressed in black pulls the victim from the wheelchair until he's on the ground, and the wheelchair is knocked over as well.

Police said the victim was physically attacked and hit several times, WABC said.

And while the victim suffered a head cut, he refused medical attention at the scene, the New York Post reported.

Police told the media they are asking for help as they pursue the suspects, noting that people can call NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782), submit tips by visiting the CrimeStoppers website at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or by messaging on Twitter @NYPDTips.

How are folks reacting?

As you might guess, observers on Twitter are none too pleased with the suspects' behavior:

  • "What the hell?" one commenter exclaimed. "This is just like New York [in] the '70s. Decent people shouldn't have to live in a city like this."
  • "Let citizens carry sidearms; give them 4 bullets a day to shoot criminals w/o worrying about getting arrested," another user suggested. "I imagine crime will go down. Start thinning out the herd."
  • "I honestly want to be shocked at this cowardly act, and it frightens me that it seems so normal," another commenter wrote.
  • "Brave robber," another user observed. "Even if he gets caught he will be out again the same day."

Thugs brutally beat up 61-year-old woman who needs walker to get around — even bash her with cooking pot. Oh, and they ripped off her walker, too.

Three women and a man ganged up on a 61-year-old woman who needs a walker to get around and brutally beat her on a Harlem sidewalk Tuesday evening, the New York Post reported.

What are the details?

Surveillance video showed the attackers repeatedly punching and stomping on the victim after she was tackled to the sidewalk.

At one point, one of the female attackers was seen beating the outnumbered woman with a cooking pot, police told the paper.

The beating — which took place at the corner of Eighth Avenue and West 151st Street around 8:20 p.m. — lasted at least 40 seconds, the Post noted.

For their efforts, the assailants rewarded themselves with credit cards, a whopping $22 in cash — as well as the walker, police told the paper.

The disabled victim was taken to a hospital where she was recovering from her injuries, police added to the Post.

Detectives were looking for the attackers, the paper said.
