Viral video: HS student slaps teacher in face twice; teacher stays seated during attack and just takes it

A viral cellphone video shows a North Carolina high school student slapping a teacher in the face at least twice — and the teacher in the clip stays seated during the physical attack, just taking it in front of shocked students.

What are the details?

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office indicated the clip began circulating Monday.

Here's the video (Content warning: Language):

"Because it involves a juvenile, we have not and will not discuss the particulars of this incident, but we will work collaboratively with those parties involved to determine the best course of action," Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. said. "At this point, we are praying for wholeness of the teacher involved and healing for our students who witnessed this deplorable act."

WXII-TV reported that Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has launched an investigation over the video.

“This behavior will not be tolerated," Superintendent Tricia McManus said, according to WXII. "At no time is it acceptable for students to put their hands on a teacher in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. My focus now is on making sure that our teacher is taken care of and has the support needed to navigate through the lasting effects of this incident.”

The station added that the principal of Parkland High School — which is in Winston-Salem and is where the incident is believed to have occurred — sent the following message to families:

"Hello Parkland Families, this is Noel Keener, Principal at Parkland High School. I am calling to let you know that earlier today our administration was made aware of a disturbing video of an inappropriate and unsettling interaction between a student and a teacher being circulated on social media. Our administration has started an investigation immediately in conjunction with our law enforcement partners at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The student involved in the video will face disciplinary action in accordance with district policies and procedures. The student may also face criminal charges.

"Please know this video is not reflective of our expectations of students at Parkland High School. We are working with district staff to address this immediately and ensure behavior like this is not tolerated in our school and district.

"We always appreciate you making us aware anytime there is something that concerns you. When you see a concerning social media post or text, please remember to report it, not repost or reshare it. We ask that you remind students about the consequences that can come from circulating or sharing inappropriate videos. We take all such matters seriously and thank you for your patience, partnership, and understanding. If you have any questions, please let me know."

WXII added that student information and discipline information is federally protected, and the district cannot share more information at the moment.

'Achieving equity' among students 'may require unequal distribution of resources and services': Milwaukee Public Schools memo

"Achieving equity" among students may "require unequal distribution of resources and services," according to a Milwaukee Public Schools memo Young America's Foundation obtained.

What are the details?

The overarching theme of the 33-page memo is student discipline "disproportionality," and the document also includes directives on anti-racism, equity, and "whiteness."

One section on page 25 of the memo reads: “Whiteness is everywhere around us. Educational practices have been rooted in whiteness and coming from a lens of whiteness for years. Educators should reflect on which elements of whiteness they see in education, which they participate in, and which elements they can work to dismantle."

That same page suggests staff ask themselves, "How is your world view and practices within education centered in whiteness? What racists [sic] beliefs have you internalized? What are specific steps we can take to de-center whiteness in our educational practices?"

A section on "equity" on page 7 makes sure to distinguish between "equality" and "equity," noting the former means "uniform distribution of district resources, supports, and opportunities" and the latter means "allocation of district resources, supports, and opportunities that is based on the needs of students and staff."

The section goes on to say that "achieving equity may require an unequal distribution of resources and services in order to ensure that all children have an equal opportunity to a free and appropriate public education."

A list of resources on page 26 links to a nearly 27-minute video titled “Whiteness: WTF? White Privilege and the Invisible Race."

YAF said it's unclear how widely the memo was distributed and that it reached out to Milwaukee Public Schools in regard to the memo.

"What Milwaukee Public Schools are promoting is yet another example of a concentrated effort to eliminate a merit-based system and replace it with one that is focused on race," Jasmyn Jordan, national chairwoman of YAF, told Fox News. "DEI is fundamentally against everything the left claims to stand for — it is the opposite of racial equality and inclusion."

'Jesus was a carpenter': Pop singer unrepentant over racy video shot in Catholic church. Priest who OK'd shoot is punished.

Pop singer Sabrina Carpenter seemed unfazed amid the fallout over her racy music video for "Feather" partially shot inside Brooklyn’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, telling Variety that "we got approval in advance — and Jesus was a carpenter."

What are the details?

Carpenter, 24, has upped her profile with hit songs and a plum gig opening for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour, Inside Edition said.

The video for "Feather" shows Carpenter in the church clad in a short black dress and veil around coffins, one of which is adorned with a cross and the phrase "RIP Bitch." Other scenes show her with men who take a nonconsensual photo of her body and then die in grisly ways, Inside Edition added. Carpenter also is splattered in fake blood for one scene.

Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello gave Carpenter and her team permission to shoot the video at the church, the outlet said, adding that soon after the video was released, Gigantiello was stripped of his administrative duties. The priest noted the images in the video were “not what was initially presented” to him, the outlet said.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn — which oversees the Catholic churches in Brooklyn and Queens — said in a statement that it was "appalled," CBS News reported.

The diocese added to the news network that Bishop Robert Brennan celebrated a Mass of Reparation at the church and "through the offering of this Mass, Bishop Brennan has restored the sanctity of this church and repaired the harm."

More from CBS News:

In a post on Facebook following those actions asking for the church community's forgiveness, Gigantiello said a film crew had come to them in September, and that he allowed filming after not finding anything untoward in a search of the participants. He said he had agreed as an "effort to further strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up a large part of this community."

Gigantiello went on to say he wasn't there during the filming, had no idea anything "provocative" was being done and didn't know coffins would be placed in the church.

Carpenter was in the Disney Channel's "Girl Meets World" series that ran from 2014-2017 and has been singing for several years. Her music video has been viewed 12 million times on YouTube since its release.
