Macron's office initially denies authenticity of video showing French president's manhandling by his geriatric wife

Video went viral early Monday appearing to show 72-year-old Brigitte Macron manhandling her former student and now husband, French President Emmanuel Macron, just before they deplaned in Hanoi, Vietnam. The president's office initially denied the video's authenticity.

The footage has not only prompted an evolving explanation from the French president but also debate online both over what qualifies as abuse and over the nature of the Macrons' controversial relationship.

In the video, captured by the Associated Press, the 47-year-old president can be seen in the open doorway of the landed plane speaking to his wife. Mrs. Macron seemingly throws her hands into the president's face, impressing upon him a momentary look of shock. Realizing he is in full view of the public below, Mr. Macron smiles, steadies himself, and waves.

After getting his bearings, Mr. Macron turns to exit the plane, offering his elderly wife his arm. She elects instead to rely on the railing, then descends the stairs beside her husband.

'It was a moment of togetherness.'

Macron's office initially denied the authenticity of the images, but when it became clear that denial was a losing strategy, Mr. Macron told reporters that the altercation was all in fun, reported Le Monde.

"My wife and I were squabbling, we were rather joking, and I was taken by surprise,," said Mr. Macron, adding that the physicality was overblown and it has now "become a kind of planetary catastrophe, and some are even coming up with theories."

He suggested further that this was the latest of a number of videos that have been misinterpreted online.

"For three weeks ... there are people who have watched videos and think I shared a bag of cocaine, that I had a fight with the Turkish president, and that now I'm having a domestic dispute with my wife," said Macron. "None of these are true."

One of the videos to which Mr. Macron was likely referring showed him tucking away a white object while seated next to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz while en route to Kyiv, Ukraine, on May 9. Critics concluded that the white object was a bag of cocaine. French officials suggested it was just a crumpled tissue.

Macron's office said of the incident on the plane in a statement obtained by CNN, "It was a moment when the president and his wife were unwinding one last time before the trip began, playfully teasing each other. It was a moment of togetherness."

'He preferred to spend his time talking with the teachers.'

Even though Mr. Macron and his office ultimately confirmed that the footage was genuine, CNN still insinuated it was being misinterpreted for the purposes of "disinformation."

Some critics online discussed whether the incident was indicative of a toxic or abusive relationship.

Normalcy advocate Robby Starbuck, for instance, suggested that "if you're in a relationship where someone puts hands on you, LEAVE. It's not normal and there's no excuse for it. People who love and respect you don't hit you."

Other critics suggested the incident might be just the latest insight into a relationship that started in 1993 when then-Brigitte Auziere, a 39-year-old high school teacher, fell for a 15-year-old boy who was a classmate of her daughter Laurence. Auziere supervised the drama club the boy was a member of.

Mr. Macron's former sports teacher told Bloomberg, "At 15, Macron had the maturity of a 25-year-old," adding, "He preferred to spend his time talking with the teachers rather than his classmates."

Mrs. Macron's family discovered her affair with the minor in 1994, prompting disgust and fury.

Is Blake Lively a mean girl, or was she set up? Justin Baldoni drama explained

Actress Blake Lively has filed a lawsuit against “It Ends with Us” director, Justin Baldoni, which alleges that Baldoni sexually harassed Lively and had his PR team orchestrate a smear campaign against her.

Baldoni has denied any wrongdoing and has filed a $250 million lawsuit of his own, not against Blake Lively, but against the New York Times for its reporting on the allegations. His lawyer, Brian Freedman, has threatened to file a lawsuit against Lively.

Both parties are accusing the other of orchestrating smear campaigns to destroy the other’s career and reputation.

“Blake Lively, a few months ago, started having videos of her past interviews going around,” Allie Beth Stuckey of “Relatable” comments. “She didn’t post them herself, but other people, I don’t know, anonymous X users, TikTok users, started posting these old interviews of Blake Lively where she comes across as very bratty.”

“Is this orchestrated?” Stuckey asks. “I’m not saying that it was, but I have heard more negative things about Blake Lively in the past few months than I had ever heard before.”

Internet sleuths have pointed out that Lively and Baldoni not only do not follow each other on social media, but much of the “It Ends with Us” cast follows Lively and not Baldoni. The original author of the book the film was based on, Colleen Hoover, no longer follows Baldoni, and Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, blocked Baldoni on social media months before the film’s release.

Despite the clear issues between Baldoni and Lively, some fans have also gone after Lively for her “tone deaf” marketing of her own projects while promoting the film.

In “It Ends with Us,” Lively’s character, Lily Bloom, owns a flower shop. At one event, Lively promoted her cocktail company, Betty Blooms. Since the film was a commentary on domestic violence, fans found this out of touch.

“People just thought that was a strange marketing gimmick given the gravity of the subject of the movie. I don’t know. I’m not really sure about that. I’m not sure whether or not that is tone deaf, maybe so,” Stuckey comments.

“Of course domestic violence is serious, but that’s kind of Colleen Hoover’s thing. She writes about some serious subjects but in a way that is very romantic, in a way that is kind of light-hearted and very easy readism. So I’m not totally sure if Blake Lively is at fault for something like this,” she adds.

However, some fans did point out that promoting cocktails through her new film is worse than tone deaf, as domestic abusers are often emboldened by alcohol.

“That’s true, that’s fair,” Stuckey says.

'She graced our lives': College student stabbed 107 times trying to protect mother against abusive stepfather over possible divorce, police say

A college student allegedly was stabbed more than 100 times by her stepfather as she attempted to protect her mother, according to police.

Early in the morning of Aug. 7, Angelina Tran was allegedly woken to the sounds of her mother being abused by her stepfather at their home in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Nghiep Kein Chau, 54, purportedly punched Tran's mother in the head "about 15 times" in the kitchen, according to charging documents.

Prosecutors say Tran attempted to protect her mother from any more domestic abuse by the stepfather. However, Chau allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Tran a total of 107 times.

The New York Post reported, "He stopped the stabbing spree several times during the rampage, the charging documents say, including once to change his clothes and another to grab a different knife." Chau allegedly switched to a meat cleaver in the middle of the rampage.

The mother allegedly escaped the carnage and called 911 to report the stabbing.

Officers with the Seattle Police Department responded to the attack shortly before 5 a.m. and found Tran bleeding from the stab wounds on her face.

Law & Crime reported, "After Nghiep was cuffed, cops found the 'stabbed and obviously deceased body' of Angelina Tran, 'lying on her back on the floor of the kitchen.'"

Police also reportedly found Chau wearing bloody clothes and holding a knife, then allegedly admitting: "I killed somebody."

According to police, Chau walked down a staircase holding a "large bloody fixed-blade kitchen style knife, which he dropped when ordered to do so by officers."

He reportedly told police that he had been "bickering" with his wife of 19 years.

Through a Vietnamese interpreter, Chau purportedly told police that he suspected his wife was going to divorce him and take his money.

According to the Seattle Times, "He also told the detective he became angry with Tran for intervening and blocking him from her mother, who he said he was trying to find and kill before police arrived, according to court documents."

Investigators obtained search warrants and reportedly seized evidence from the residence, including home security video. The security footage allegedly displayed the initial assault as well as the fatal stabbing of the 21-year-old University of Washington student.

Investigators said that Chau stabbed Tran "at least 107 times in the torso" based on the home video.

Chau was taken into custody by police. He was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. Chau is being held at the King County Correctional Facility on $5 million bond.

An arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 31.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to direct funds in Tran's name to the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging.

"She graced our lives as an incredible daughter, a cherished friend, and above all, a perfect girlfriend," the crowdfunding campaign reads. "She excelled in her studies, with just one more year remaining at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her dedication and hard work were truly admirable. The pain of her absence is profound as she was a gem of a human being. The impact she had on all those fortunate enough to know her was significant."

Tennessee Titans' Hassan Haskins accused of strangling girlfriend for 'liking' another man's Instagram photo

NFL player Hassan Haskins is accused of domestic violence. The Tennessee Titans' backup running back is accused of strangling his girlfriend for allegedly liking a photo on Instagram.

On Thursday, Haskins was arrested in Davidson County and charged with felony aggravated assault by strangulation. His girlfriend was also charged in the incident.

On June 22, Haskins reportedly got into a disagreement with his girlfriend, Makiah Green. The argument began when Haskins noticed that his girlfriend "liked" another man's Instagram photo, according to ESPN.

Green reportedly threw Haskins' shoes on the floor. He allegedly told her to stop, and when she didn't, Haskins shoved her to the ground. Haskins then used both hands to strangle her, according to the police report. The couple allegedly slapped each other.

Green provided police with photos of bruising to her right arm and cheek, red marks on the front of her neck, and a scratch on the side of her neck, according to The Tennessean.

According to the affidavit, Green grabbed a knife and threatened to slash the tires of Haskins' car, but she stopped after Haskins cocked a gun and said, "I wish you would."

There was reportedly a second incident on Thursday.

Haskins allegedly left Green at a restaurant, and she was forced to take a ride-sharing service back home. Upon returning home, Green reportedly threw a glass at Haskins and then hid in the bedroom.

Green reportedly grabbed Haskins' phone and saw Snapchat notifications with photos of naked women. She then shattered Haskins' cell phone, broke his PlayStation 5 video game console, and assaulted him, according to police.

"The Davidson County prosecutor dealing with the case concluded in the affidavit that there is probable cause to believe Haskins did unlawfully strangle Green, and Green did unlawfully damage Haskins' property, place her hands around his neck, and hit him with a broom," The Tennessean reported. Haskins allegedly provided police with videos of Green hitting him with a broom.

Haskins allegedly kicked down the bedroom door, and Green is said to rip a $5,000 chain off the football player's neck.

Green was arrested and reportedly charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism. She posted a $7,500 bond and was released on Thursday.

Haskins, a fourth-round pick out of Michigan in 2022, was released after posting a $10,000 bond on Thursday.

Haskins, 23, and Green, 20, are scheduled for court appearances on July 10.

The Titans released a statement Friday night that read: "We are aware of the situation and gathering additional information."

Last season, Haskins appeared in 15 games for the Titans, including one start. Haskins totaled 25 carries and 93 rushing yards. He returned 19 kickoffs for 414 return yards in 2022.
