'Don't Run Joe': Far-left group that 'helped defeat Trump' launches campaign urging Biden not to run in 2024

A far-left group that once took credit for pushing former President Donald Trump out of the White House is now turning its back on President Joe Biden by launching a "Don't Run Joe" campaign. The organization hopes to pressure Biden to back out of running for reelection in 2024, the New York Post reported.

The campaign was initiated by RootsAction, a self-described "progressive" organization committed to "resist[ing] the policies of the Republican right at every turn, while confronting the Democratic Party's tendency to give ground to GOP obstruction in the name of 'bipartisanship.'"

The group claimed it "helped defeat Trump" by funneling "several months and major resources to its Vote Trump Out campaign, with fulltime organizers in the battleground states of Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin."

RootsAction previously supported independent Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.

One day after the midterm elections, the organization launched an anti-Biden digital ad campaign initially focused on targeting Democrats in New Hampshire, according to a RootsAction press release.

The group hopes to convince Democrats nationwide to elect a new candidate to run in the 2024 presidential election and ultimately pressure President Joe Biden to announce that he will not seek a second term.

"It's clear that Joe Biden should not be the party's presidential nominee in 2024," the Don't Run Joe campaign said.

The campaign expressed disappointment with Biden's "moderate" policies and stated that his renomination "would be a tragic mistake."

The digital ads launched this week for the Don't Run Joe campaign included the messages: "We cannot risk losing in 2024. We shouldn't gamble on Joe Biden's low approval rating," "Now is not the time for weak measures! We need solid leadership to keep Republicans out of the White House in 2024," and "We need strong leadership to defeat Republicans in 2024. #DontRunJoe. Give Democrats a fighting chance."

"The threat of a neofascist GOP has become all too obvious. Bold and inspiring leadership from the Oval Office will be essential," the campaign claimed. "Unfortunately, President Biden has been neither bold nor inspiring."

During a press conference on Wednesday following the midterm elections, Biden told reporters that his "intention is to run again."

"I think everybody wants me to run, but we're going to have discussions about it," Biden continued. "I hope Jill and I get a little time to sneak away for a week between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and my guess is it will be early next year when we make that judgment."

According to Reuters, Biden's approval rating has dipped to just 39% as of Monday.

RootsAction aims to nominate a Democrat candidate who will push a "truly progressive agenda."

Progressive group says running Biden as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee 'would be a tragic mistake,' and that it will campaign to ensure he is not nominated

The progressive group RootsAction will campaign to prevent President Joe Biden from becoming the Democratic presidential nominee during the 2024 election cycle.

"Unfortunately, President Biden has been neither bold nor inspiring. And his prospects for winning re-election appear to be bleak. With so much at stake, making him the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer in 2024 would be a tragic mistake," RootsAction declared in a statement. "The #DontRunJoe campaign will launch nationwide on November 9, 2022 -- the day after the midterm elections."

"A president is not his party’s king, and he has no automatic right to renomination. Joe Biden should not seek it. If he does, he will have a fight on his hands," the statement said.

President Biden said late last year that he plans to run for re-election as long as he has "good health."

Biden, who has already made history as the oldest president in U.S. history, would be 86 years old at the end of a second term in office. He has been underwater on job approval in various polls for quite some time.

"We're making this announcement today because the current debate over whether Biden should run again focuses too narrowly on his age and the latest polls," RootsAction cofounder Jeff Cohen said, according to the RootsAction press release. "It's his performance -- his inability to fight for working people and stand up against Republican and corporate obstruction -- that has us worried about 2024."

"Democrats would do better in this year's midterms if the public knew Biden would not be heading the ticket in 2024," Cohen told Fox News Digital. "We believe that would shift voters' attention away from Biden to the extremism of Republicans, on everything from abortion rights to voting rights to climate-change denial."

A recent New York Times/Siena College survey of registered voters found that among individuals who indicated that they plan to vote in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary, 64% think the party should nominate someone other than Biden for the 2024 presidential contest, while just 26% think Biden should be the nominee again.

"If you're in touch with Democratic Party activists, the frustration is palpable," Cohen said, according to Politico. "Biden appears to be dithering while progressive achievements just go out the window, from abortion rights to the Clean Air Act."
