City commission demands emergency declaration over LGBTQ refugees fleeing to Seattle from GOP states



So many LGBTQ refugees are fleeing from Republican-controlled states to Seattle that the city's LGBTQ Commission is calling on the mayor to issue a civil emergency order.

The commission said the throngs of 2SLGBTQIA+ people streaming into Seattle were leading to a strain on community organizations and a lack of resources available to them.

'We're seeing families coming to Seattle to protect their trans kids.'

"We are at risk of seeing some of these community-based organizations ceasing to exist in the next three, six, or 12 months," LGBTQ Commission member Jessa Davis said.

"The downstream costs of letting people slip through the cracks is going to cost the city more," Davis continued.

She admitted that there were not "busloads of thousands of people coming here" but said that "the numbers are significant."

On Saturday, members of the Mutual Aid Network for Trans and Intersex Individuals in Seattle and the Gender Equity Movement organized a rally to push for the emergency declaration.

"With the kind of awful stuff that’s going on today, we need to say something," 76-year-old Maridee Bonadea said.

A report from KIRO-TV verified nine fundraisers through GoFundMe from members of the LGBTQ+ community asking for help to relocate to Seattle.

One fundraiser asked for $2.2K to help three transgender roommates move from North Carolina to Seattle in order to seek "gender affirming care" so they can truly enjoy life. They have only raised $295 from six donations so far.

Mayor Katie Wilson (D) stopped short of issuing the emergency order but said the city would push for greater coordination to provide better access to resources.

She also called for a new city team to "develop community-informed responses that center housing, behavioral health, food, transportation, legal navigation, and survivor-centered violence prevention."

Davis responded positively to the mayor's order in an email statement to Blaze News.

"We're pleased to be working with the Mayor's Office and City Council as part of the inter-departmental team (IDT) being set up to address this issue," she wrote. "We're also preparing to continue engaging with this topic as it relates to the urgent needs our community at this time and will have further comment as we formulate more in-depth policy recommendations in light of the IDT's objectives."

"Trans people are coming, from especially red states, to Seattle, not just for gender-affirming care but for safety," commission member Andrew Ashiofu said. "We're seeing families coming to Seattle to protect their trans kids."

Wilson said she would work with the commission to ensure "Seattle is a place of safety, dignity, and inclusion for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community."

Miami Beach officials fed up with spring break violence declare state of emergency: 'It's very hard to deter idiots and criminals'



Officials in Miami Beach, Florida, made waves this week by declaring a temporary state of emergency and implementing a strict citywide curfew in attempt to curb out-of-control spring break violence.

What are the details?

During a press conference Tuesday, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber condemned the rash of senseless violence that erupted in South Beach’s entertainment district over the weekend.

"If you want to see what a very frustrated and angry mayor looks like, you’re looking at him," Gelber said. "Our city is well past its endpoint. We can’t endure this any more."

Since the start of spring break just a few short days ago, at least five people have been shot, nine police officers have been injured, and more than 100 guns have been confiscated by law enforcement authorities, WSVN-TV reported.

In a tweet Sunday, Miami Beach police offered a snippet of the ongoing chaos in the city.

"The party needs to end," police declared in the post.

Gelber and other city officials said the 12 a.m. curfew will go into effect Thursday morning and will continue throughout the weekend. It will reportedly cover areas south of 23rd Street down to South Pointe Drive, from the Atlantic Ocean to Biscayne Bay.

"This isn’t your mother and father’s spring break. This is something wholly different," Gelber explained on Tuesday.

Later in the press conference, he said, "We haven’t been able to figure out how to stop spring break from coming. I say that all the time. We don’t want spring break here, but they keep coming."

"It’s very hard to deter idiots and criminals from doing things," he added.

What else?

Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements backed the city's move, noting that this year's violence has been especially egregious.

"What I saw this year made me ... almost cringe. You see that gunfire was almost 10 feet from an officer who was on an ATV, to dive off the ATV and get behind it, because he didn’t know where the gunfire was coming from. That’s a problem," Clements said, adding, "We have to do something."

Some visitors also told WSVN they are afraid to go downtown and won't be coming back to the area in future years.

"I was sitting on Ocean, and we got tumbled by a stampede, and they were shooting like, three times in the same hour. It was crazy," one visitor said, adding, "I don’t feel safe. Once it hits 6 o’clock I’m outta there."

"It was just a shock to hear gunshots and all the commotion outside the window," another recalled.

Two separate shooting incidents occurred in the beach town over the weekend, sending massive crowds of people running down packed streets.

Anything else?

The emergency declaration was not issued without pushback, however. Some detractors even decried the move as racist.

"The only emergency is that black people are on the Beach," Stephen Hunter Johnson, a member of Miami-Dade’s Black Advisory Board, charged, according to the Miami Herald. "I don’t understand how this town has been doing spring break for at least 25 years and can’t figure it out."

Democratic state lawmaker Michael Grieco, a former Miami Beach commissioner, complained the declaration was far too heavy-handed, saying, "The state of emergency is an abuse of governmental power, and it scares the crap out of me."

The U.S. Senate votes for open borders

The United States Senate passed a resolution in support of open borders Thursday.

It was disguised, of course, as a deep-seated concern for constitutional integrity in the face of President Trump’s emergency declaration to secure the southern border.

Haha. Constitutional integrity. That’s a good one. But on the scale of “don’t pee on me and tell me it’s raining,” this goes all the way up to 11.

The 12 Republicans who joined the Democrat minority in the Senate to disapprove of “dangerous precedents” being set haven’t batted much of an eye (cheap rhetoric doesn’t count) when baby-killing budgets have been passed, federal deficits have been exploded beyond rationality, gender has been redefined, religious freedom has been threatened, socialist medicine has been codified, and courts have become the “more equal than all the others” branch of government.

They have watched and watched and watched and watched as the fundamental duties of Congress have been traded away for a bowl of porridge. When Jacob betrayed Esau, he got a birthright. But the Republicans in Congress can never help but get their Esau on. A birthright would be too much work. Porridge is better.

And now with the help of the magic “Rs,” the well-documented flood of illegal immigration across the southern border is not only being ignored but actually protected with the insistence that do so is a constitutional prerogative.

I’m sorry, guys and gals. But there is simply no objective way to tell any more that you actually care about the Framers’ intent about anything. Just as Congress refuses to build a wall on the border, they have refused to build walls against authoritarian usurpation by the bureaucrats and the black-robed tyrants for decades.

Now they want to claim that Trump is actually the authoritarian who needs to be checked. But he’s a symptom of years of malfeasance, not a proximal cause of our current reality. Had Republicans cared about the Constitution and acted accordingly since Reagan left the scene, Trump wouldn’t have a border problem to solve. Heck, had Republicans cared about the Constitution and acted accordingly since Reagan, there would've never been a President Trump at all.
