'Extraordinarily grotesque' Hawaii fireworks explosion causes New Year's Day 'war zone' carnage; 3 dead, over 20 injured

Three people are dead and over 20 injured after a fireworks demonstration in Hawaii turned deadly on New Year's Day. Authorities said the horrific explosion caused carnage they likened to a "war zone."

Just after midnight Wednesday, a fireworks demonstration took place in the Salt Lake neighborhood of Honolulu.

'It really looked like a war zone and like a bomb dropped right in front of that house.'

Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan explained, "Based on the preliminary review and nearby surveillance footage, evidence from the scene, and witness statements, it appears that shortly after midnight, a person who attended the party lit an aerial cake — which is a container containing multiple aerial fireworks — in the driveway at the carport. The cake fell to the side, and the aerial shot into crates that contained additional fireworks, setting off what is the explosion that you saw on multiple media outlets and social media posts at this time.”

Aerial drone footage captured the moment of the explosion.

The explosion caused damage to the home where the fireworks were being launched as well as to houses across the street.

"It really looked like a war zone and like a bomb dropped right in front of that house," said Honolulu Fire Department Chief Kalani Hao.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said the victims who died suffered the "worst possible war zone injuries" — and they were so extreme "that brain material was across the sidewalk from the ferocity of this explosion."

Green added that "we want people to hear that because that is what is really possible with these explosive fireworks. Some of the deceased had injuries that were that tragic, that traumatic. We’re talking about the worst possible war zone injuries that took their lives."

More than a dozen ambulances responded, and first responders shut down a nearby street to stage a triage center.

More than 20 people were transported to area hospitals for injuries; some were listed in critical condition. Citing the city's emergency medical services, Hawaii News Now reported that three children were injured in what officials are calling a "mass casualty incident."

Green added, "It's not just losing a finger, it's extraordinarily grotesque events, and in the next couple of days, it's entirely likely that some of the people that didn't even look that bad will die because their lungs were burned out — and that's what you happen to see when explosions happen right in front of you."

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Green said two of the severely injured victims were children ages 1 and 3 and that they would be permanently disfigured or die from their injuries.

Dr. Jim Ireland — director of the city's emergency medical services — said, “We did not actually transport a lot of patients with minor injuries, but I remember a 12-year-old girl with burns on her leg and some shrapnel."

Ireland said of the injuries, "Just very, very sad — nothing I have ever seen in EMS. Some of the folks who were here who have been to war, who have been in combat, said it reminded them of things they have seen in combat.“

Police said two women were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third woman later died from her injuries at a hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said, "Enough is enough."

'Here's an individual that's not a professional to the best of my knowledge, unprofessional at fireworks, and here we have a tragic loss.'

"A massive explosion caused by what appears to be illegal fireworks claimed at least three lives and left over 20 others critically injured," Blangiardi said in a statement. "This incident is a painful reminder of the danger posed by illegal fireworks, which put lives at risk, drain our first responder resources, and disrupt our communities."

Blangiardi vowed to work with federal and state agencies to "shut down this illegal firework trade once and for all."

"We will push for stronger enforcement, tougher penalties, new technologies, and a united effort to stop the import of illegal fireworks," Blangiardi stated. "Our communities deserve better. We cannot allow this senseless danger to persist, and we will take decisive action to ensure the safety and well-being of Oahu residents."

Gov. Green added, "Because combatting illegal fireworks has been a priority, we established the Illegal Fireworks Task Force in 2023 to identify and disrupt supply chains. It has seized 227,000 pounds of illegal fireworks to date, but incidents like this remind us of the ongoing challenges we face."

The Hawaii governor urged residents to report illegal fireworks activity to authorities.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting the Honolulu Police Department with the investigation.

Honolulu Police Chief Logan said authorities have yet to determine whether anyone involved in the incident will be hit with criminal charges.

"Here's an individual that's not a professional to the best of my knowledge, unprofessional at fireworks, and here we have a tragic loss," Logan stated.

Logan noted that HPD’s Specialized Services Division Bomb Unit recovered additional fireworks on the property that did not explode.

Hawaii state law declares that anyone "purchasing, possessing, storing, setting off, igniting, or discharging aerial devices, display fireworks or articles pyrotechnic without a valid pyrotechnic permit may face Class C felony charges, resulting in a five-year term of imprisonment if convicted."

The Hawaii Police Department warned the public on Dec. 30: "Please remember that anyone igniting aerial pyrotechnic displays risks not only their life but also the lives of loved ones nearby and potentially neighbors as well."

New York man arrested by arson bomb squad for giving 11-year-old son fireworks that set houses on fire

A New York man was arrested by an arson bomb squad for giving his 11-year-old son a firework that set two houses on fire, according to authorities.

According to a press release from the Nassau County Police Department, officers responded around 8:50 a.m. on the 4th of July to reports of a house fire in Levittown, New York.

Police determined that a 33-year-old father gave his 11-year-old son a firework and instructed him to light it. The explosive allegedly malfunctioned and soared into a nearby shed, which caused it to go up in flames.

The blaze in Long Island quickly spread to the defendant's home and then to a neighbor's house.

A single mother renting part of the first home to catch fire was reportedly forced to flee for her life from the burning house.

The Wantagh Fire Department responded and was able to extinguish the fires. However, both homes suffered extensive damage. No injuries were reported.

The Nassau County’s Arson Bomb Squad was also called to the scene and arrested Karamjit Singh without incident.

Singh was charged with second-degree arson, fourth-degree reckless endangerment, unlawfully selling of fireworks to someone under 18, unlawfully possessing fireworks, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Singh was released from jail without bail on Friday after pleading not guilty at his arraignment.

Singh's son was allegedly released to a family member.

Nassau County Fire Marshals launched an investigation into the fiery fireworks accident.

In nearby Suffolk County, a 21-year-old man reportedly severed three fingers on his left hand, damaged two fingers, and suffered burns on his leg in a fireworks accident on July 4th.

A 66-year-old Long Island man from Brentwood lost a hand and several fingers of his second hand after a fireworks explosion on Saturday night, according to WNBC.

As Blaze News previously reported, a South Carolina man was killed after putting a lit firework on top of his head while "showboating" during a 4th of July neighborhood block party. Video caught the last moments of the 41-year-old man's life as he was dancing in an Uncle Sam costume before his tragic, sudden death.

Blaze News also reported on a fatal fireworks accident on Independence Day in Tennessee. A 35-year-old man suffered a large chest wound and died after a firework exploded in his hands.

VIDEO: Explosion rocks LA neighborhood; 16 people injured when bomb squad detonates improvised explosives after seizing 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks

At least 16 people were injured, including police officers, when the Los Angeles Police Department's bomb squad detonated explosives after seizing a massive stockpile of illegal fireworks on Wednesday. The large explosion flipped vehicles and damaged homes in the South Los Angeles neighborhood.

The LAPD seized 5,000 pounds of illegal commercial-grade fireworks from a home in South L.A. following a tip provided to law enforcement. The resident had a "cache of homemade fireworks" and "improvised explosives" at the house, according to the Sacramento Bee. Fireworks are illegal to sell or possess in Los Angeles.

The fireworks were in boxes marked with the words, "Made in China." Authorities said the explosives posed an "imminent and real danger" to the community.

LAPD Chief Michel Moore said they planned to move the fireworks to a safe location with three box trucks and a 53-foot trailer, but the "improvised explosives" were too dangerous and "unstable" to transport.

Moore said there were 40 homemade explosive devices, which were the size of Coca-Cola cans, and 200 smaller explosives.

Less than 10 pounds of explosives were placed inside a total containment vessel, an iron compartment on a tractor-trailer designed to safely withstand explosions. The amount of explosives was reportedly far less than the vessel's safety rating.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. local time, the LAPD bomb squad detonated the explosives, which caused a blast so intense that it tore apart the total containment vehicle. The large explosion wrecked cars in the immediate area and caused damage to homes in the residential neighborhood.

Fire Chief Ralph M. Terrazas said nine police officers and a federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officer were taken to hospital with minor injuries. There were also six civilians, ranging in ages from 51 to 85, rushed to a local medical center. One person was injured at the scene of the blast, but declined to be taken to a hospital. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, according to authorities.

Prior to the explosion, police reportedly evacuated homes on both sides of the street where the explosives were detonated.

"This vessel should have been able to dispose of that material," Moore said at a press conference. "You saw the resulting damage, and the total catastrophic failure of that containment vehicle."

"Clearly, protocols were followed and pursued. But something happened in that containment vessel that should not have happened and we don't know why," Chief Moore said on Wednesday night. "But we intend to find out why."

Moore said an investigation has been initiated, but could take several days.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) issued a statement on the explosion, "I've directed the LAPD to conduct a full investigation into this incident, so we can better understand why this happened. Illegal fireworks pose a great danger and can cost lives. We will prosecute those who use or possess them to the fullest extent of the law."

CNBC reported that resident Arturo Cejas, 27, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a destructive device. Moore noted that Cejas may also face charges of child endangerment because his 10-year-old brother was in the home.
