JD Vance drags leftist FCC commissioner nominee Gigi Sohn over her past extremist remarks

Republican lawmakers held President Joe Biden's leftist nominee for the Federal Communications Commission to task this week for woke, inflammatory, and censorious remarks she has made in the past, putting her ability to govern fairly or competently in question.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) scrutinized Sohn for several remarks she has made, in some cases swapping out the racial groups she saw fit to denigrate for others in order to ascertain whether they were similarly unacceptable in slightly altered contexts.

What is the background?

Biden nominated Sohn in October 2021 to fill a commissioner seat on the FCC. Owing to sustained opposition by Republicans and underwhelming support from Democrats, Sohn's nomination expired, so Biden had to re-nominate her on Jan. 4, 2022.

TheBlaze previously reported that the White House, which "continues to strongly back" Sohn, expects her to execute its so-called "digital equity" agenda.

Republicans recognize that Sohn, who has a history of criticizing conservative and right-leaning news outlets, may approach her responsibilities with a strong bias. This could prove deleterious, as the FCC is a powerful regulatory arm of the state, granted oversight over technology, telecommunications, and media.

Showdown

Sohn appeared Tuesday before the Senate Commerce Committee for her third confirmation hearing, 476 days after her initial nomination.

Vance noted in his preamble that while he agreed with some of Sohn's positions, of special concern to him was her participation in "this weird racialization of American political rhetoric in the last few years."

"There's been this weird trend in certain corners of American politics to be very, very racialized and even to criticize explicit racial groups," said Vance.

The senator from Ohio then provided a number of Sohn's tweets, albeit in modified forms to highlight their partisan and identitarian nature.

"And I quote, 'President Obama is a raggedy black supremacist president and his cowardly enablers would rather kill everybody than stop killing white people,'" said Vance. "Do you think a person that said that should be appointed or confirmed to the FCC?"

When Sohn responded by suggesting more context was needed, Vance added, "I think clearly a person who said that should not be appointed to the FCC, and in fact, you retweeted the exact same thing, only with President Trump instead of President Obama, and the races reversed."

As Vance indicated, in June 2020, Sohn retweeted a post from actress Issa Rae, which read, "Your raggedy white supremacist president and his cowardly enablers would rather kill everybody than stop killing black people."

Again, Vance gauged whether the racially charged rhetoric Sohn has dealt in would be acceptable, first, if the races were changed, and second, for a prospective FCC commissioner to be on record as writing.

"'Angry black woman. Not a good look, Judge Brown Jackson,'" said Vance. "Would a person who tweeted that pejoratively be deserving of the position that you're seeking?"

Sohn recognized the rhetoric as her own, only slightly changed, and claimed it had nothing to do with the FCC role she is seeking.

Contrary to Sohn's claim, Vance suggested that her past racist remarks were relevant because "we live in a country that’s very diverse. People come from different backgrounds. And one of the things that preserves what little racial comedy and harmony we have in this country is that our leaders don’t use that racial comedy and harmony like a toddler who discovered their daddy’s gun."

Vance continued, saying, "You talk about racial issues in a way that will inflame the very worst things in our country. And I fear that if you’re given this position of authority, you will use that authority to continue to inflame and to continue, potentially even, to censor based on some of these ideas."

While Sohn contended that she had made the remarks as an activist or as a private citizen, and that they had no bearing on how she would act as an FCC commissioner, Vance suggested her racist statements nevertheless revealed "something about how you see the world, how you think about the world, and how you feel about the world. ... They are reflective of a person who will have a lot of power."

Republicans appear unified in their concerns about Sohn's ideological capture and her capacity to abuse that power.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) stated Tuesday, "We know enough from today’s extreme left what happens when power is put in the wrong hands. It doesn’t take much to imagine a partisan FCC going down a dark path in attempting to censor what we see, hear, read, and ultimately think. As such, our responsibility as senators is to make sure an FCC nominee not only has the expertise to be an independent regulator, but also possess good judgment and temperament. The nominee must be fair, ethical, and perhaps most importantly, honest."

"On all these fronts, Gigi Sohn fails," Cruz noted.

Cruz suggested that Sohn has "displayed bad judgment and poor ethics" and has "associated herself with the most radical views on the far left."

The Republican senator from Texas added, "If Ms. Sohn’s brazen theft of intellectual property, lack of candor, and conflicts of interest weren’t disqualifying on their own, then her long record of poor judgment should seal her fate. ... Putting Ms. Sohn on the Commission would create deep mistrust of the FCC amongst half our population."

Ideologue

Sohn, who previously worked in the Obama White House, has made little secret of her ideological bent.

Sohn has previously castigated Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for calling attention to online bias and claimed Fox News "has had the most negative impact on our democracy" and is "state-sponsored propaganda."

Biden's nominee also co-founded the telecom advocacy group Public Knowledge, which has received at least $1,148,984 in funding from radical leftist billionaire George Soros via his Open Society Foundations between 2016 and 2020.

In late 2021, the Wall Street Journal's editorial board claimed that Sohn "favors deploying the agency's regulatory power to shackle broadband providers and silence conservative voices."

The editorial board also warned that Sohn "could also use the agency's power to block mergers that expand conservative media's reach," adding, "Ms. Sohn's strident partisanship should disqualify her from serving as an officer of an independent agency with so much power to control the public airwaves."

Democrats under pressure to confirm censorial leftist Gigi Sohn as FCC commissioner before midterms

On January 4, President Joe Biden re-nominated Gigi Sohn to fill a commissioner seat on the Federal Communications Commission after her previous 2021 nomination had technically expired. The pressure is now on Democrats to fill the post, as they will be unable to do so if Republicans take control of Congress in November.

Owing to a successful and unified Republican blockade, Sohn's confirmation will require the support of all 50 Senate Democrats, unlikely since Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) aren't big fans.

The White House, which "continues to strongly back" Sohn, expects her to execute its so-called "digital equity" agenda, as her confirmation would provide Democrats with a majority on the FCC, which is presently deadlocked 2-2.

Republicans recognize that Sohn, a leftist with a history of criticizing conservative and right-leaning news outlets, may approach her responsibilities with a strong bias. This could prove impactful, as the FCC is a powerful regulatory arm of the state, granted oversight over technology, telecommunications, and media.

Last-ditch effort before the midterms

The Hill noted last month that Democrats may amplify claims that the current 2-2 partisan split "produces gridlock and prevents the agency from doing its job," but that such a claim "would be utterly disingenuous; the FCC has operated with fewer than five commissioners for more than 25 percent of its existence" and previously "had no trouble fulfilling its mission."

This claim was recently repeated by National Treasury Employees Union President Anthony Reardon in a letter to Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). Reardon stated, "I feel that any further delay in the confirmation of her nomination threatens to inhibit progress at the FCC to the detriment of both the workforce and the American consumer."

Harold Feld, senior vice president of George Soros-funded lobby group Public Knowledge — a nonprofit co-founded by Sohn — recently suggested that despite their wariness about Sohn's alleged extremism, Democrat senators may rally ahead of the November elections and confirm Biden's pick.

"Reality is setting in, and making sure the agency can fully function is critical," said Feld.

While there remain Democrat holdouts, it is possible that the Republican blockade may waver. Should the Senate Democrats pick up a handful of votes across the aisle, Manchin's or Kelly's support or lack thereof may not be deal breakers, especially not if, as reported by the the Federalist late last month, Sen. Cortez Masto ultimately gives Sohn her support.

Sohn has obtained unlikely support from so-called conservatives in the past.

Sohn gets support from purportedly conservative Newsmax

Despite Sohn's antipathy for conservative voices and the perceived likelihood that she would wield regulatory power to accomplish leftist aims, she has received support from the conservative news network Newsmax and its CEO, Chris Ruddy, as well as from the One America News network.

Tucker Carlson noted that Ruddy, "who claims to be conservative and runs Newsmax, the guy who gave a million dollars to the Clinton Foundation, is supporting her nomination."

Last fall, Ruddy stated, "Increasingly, independently operated cable news channels like Newsmax are being sidelined in favor of a small number of mega-corporations who dominate the channel line-ups, forcing upon consumers expensive and little-watched networks. ... It's bad for the public interest and dangerous for democracy."

Ruddy added, "While I don't always agree with the nominees on many policy matters, Newsmax fully supports the Commission's mandate to promote diversity, localism and competition in the marketplace."

OAN President Charles Herring reportedly extolled Ms. Sohn’s commitment to “diversity in media.”

Axios indicated that Newsmax and OAN, relatively smaller networks, might gain greatly from Sohn's prospective attacks on bigger conservative programmers with which they hope to compete.

Considerable bias

Extra to having co-founded the telecom advocacy group Public Knowledge, which has received at least $1,148,984 in funding from radical leftist billionaire George Soros via his Open Society Foundations between 2016 and 2020, Sohn has long been a partisan critic of Republican politicians, conservative causes, and right-leaning news outlets.

The Wall Street Journal's editorial board wrote on November 8, 2021, that Sohn, who previously worked in the Obama White House, "favors deploying the agency's regulatory power to shackle broadband providers and silence conservative voices."

The editorial board warned that she "could also use the agency's power to block mergers that expand conservative media's reach," adding, "Ms. Sohn's strident partisanship should disqualify her from serving as an officer of an independent agency with so much power to control the public airwaves."

Sohn has reportedly downplayed big tech's censorship of conservatives. She tweeted from her unverified account in May 2020, "For years @Twitter & @Facebook tried to appease @realDonaldTrump & other right-wing extremists on phony claims of conservative bias. It didn't work."

The Media Research Center reported that Sohn castigated Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for calling attention to online bias. She tweeted in July 2020, "No shock - @Jim_Jordan rants and raves about so-called anti-conservative bias on online platforms, which we all know is a bunch of BS.

On October 28, 2020, Sohn accused Fox News of being "state-sponsored propaganda."

— Gigi Sohn (@Gigi Sohn) 1603894689

Sohn also intimated that the FCC should deny the Sinclair Broadcast Group licenses when they come up for renewal, meaning the conservative local politics and news channels would be criminalized and silenced.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) characterized Sohn as a "complete political ideologue who has disdain for conservatives. She would be a complete nightmare for the country when it comes to regulating the public airwaves. ... I will do everything in my power to convince colleagues on both sides of the aisle to reject this extreme nominee."

In March, the Fraternal Order of Police sent letters to various senators, urging them to vote against Sohn's nomination in light of "extreme views" that "she has never moderated."

Biden FCC nominee previously described Fox News as 'state-sponsored propaganda'

Gigi Sohn, who has been nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), previously referred to Fox News as "state-sponsored propaganda" and said that the outlet has had a detrimental impact on American democracy.

"For all my concerns about #Facebook, I believe that Fox News has had the most negative impact on our democracy. It's state-sponsored propaganda, with few if any opposing viewpoints. Where's the hearing about that?" she tweeted in October 2020.

When GOP Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri asked Sohn whether she is biased against Fox News, Sohn told Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas that her tweets about Fox News were issued in the context of a hearing in which blame for misinformation was rightfully being attributed to Big Tech.

Sohn said that her "opinions as a public interest advocate will have no bearing on how I behave as a policymaker," in the event that she is confirmed as commissioner of the FCC.

Sohn told Cruz that she has "also been critical of liberal stations as well."

She said that she spent years working with "conservative cable channels" in order "to get them carriage on cable systems when those systems would not carry them."

America News Network President Charles Herring has issued a statement in support of Sohn.

"I'm fully aware of Gigi's personal views, yet I'm even more knowledgable on her strong belief and advocacy for diversity in the programming lineup, especially in news, regardless of conflicts with her personal views," Herring said in the statement.

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy has also backed the nomination: "While I don't always agree with the nominees on many policy matters, Newsmax fully supports the Commission's mandate to promote diversity, localism and competition in the marketplace," Ruddy said in a statement, according to Axios. "Newsmax believes both nominees are committed to that mandate."

Black community outraged after California cop shoots and kills a black man, but cellphone video shows he was pulling a gun

Some members of the black community in Southern California are expressing outrage over the latest incident of a police officer shooting and killing a black man, but cellphone video shows that he was pulling a gun during the altercation.

The violent and lethal confrontation unfolded outside a liquor store in the city of San Bernardino on Thursday.

Cellphone video from a bystander shows the police officer and the man wrestling before the man breaks free. The officer quickly pulls his gun and shoots at the man several times.

Authorities say that the man was taken to the hospital and later died of his injuries.

The San Bernardino Police Department posted a snippet of the cellphone video that shows the struggle and the shooting of the man.

They identified the man as 35-year-old Mark Matthew Bender Jr.

Some of the neighborhood members expressed outrage at the incident and condemned the officer for being so quick to shoot at the man, implying that racism was a motive for his actions.

But a closer look at the cellphone video shows that the man was reaching for his gun and pulled it out during the altercation the moment before the officer fired on him.

KTLA-TV's Gigi Graciette posted a screenshot showing the gun.

A statement released by the San Bernardino Police Department said that the officer had responded to a call about a man with a gun jumping on cars in the "King Tut" liquor store. He was near the store at the time and arrived quickly.

The officer confronted Bender, but the man refused to follow his commands and attempted to enter the liquor store, inside which were numerous employees and residents.

The statement said that the officer attempted to physically restrain Bender but that he was overpowered. It added that Bender reached for his gun and turned toward the officer when the officer shot at him four times.

Police said they provided Bender with medical aid but that he died at the hospital. They also claimed that they recovered a firearm at the scene. The 9mm handgun was loaded and not registered, and Bender was not legally allowed to possess a gun at the time.

The statement also lists Bender's long history of arrests for violent crimes, including false imprisonment, criminal threats, and attempted murder. In addition he also had been arrested for domestic violence, possession of narcotics for sale, grand theft, and various probation violations.

Despite the report of the gun, some community members still accused the police of acting inappropriately.

"You can't justify a murder because he had a gun," said John Anderson, a resident of the neighborhood, to KCAL-TV. "He had a gun, if he did, to protect themselves, probably from them. They're the ones doing the damage, they're the ones doing the hurt."
