Man indicted on hate crime charges after allegedly spitting at Asian woman, yelling 'you f***ing Chinese' at her, and causing her injuries

A man who allegedly spit at an Asian woman in a Manhattan subway station, yelled "you f***ing Chinese" at her, and charged at her, after which she fell and was injured, has been indicted on hate crime charges, the New York Post reported.

What's the background?

Derrick Johnson, 40, approached two women of Asian descent at the Rockefeller Center station May 8 and doused them with an unidentified liquid amid his racist tirade, the Post said, citing prosecutors.

“You f***ing Chinese. I don’t know why you’re here in America,” Johnson allegedly hollered at one of the women before he charged at her, which resulted in her falling to the ground, law enforcement sources told the paper.

Johnson then allegedly spit at her while she was on the ground, the Post said, citing sources.

The 26-year-old woman who fell suffered “significant bruising” to her arms and legs and “substantial pain and swelling to her head and jaw,” the paper said, citing a press release from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Johnson was charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment, ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, and remanded to jail at his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, the Post reported.

“The subway is central to our city, and riders of all backgrounds deserve safety when they travel,” Bragg said in a statement. “The rise of bias-driven crimes is unacceptable. We are expanding our Office’s Hate Crimes Unit to enhance these prosecutions while increasing community engagement and other preventative measures. If you have been a victim of a hate crime, please call my Office’s Hate Crimes Hotline at 212-335-3100.”

The Post, citing police sources, also reported that Johnson was arrested last month for attacking two officers who were responding to a call about a lewd male in Chelsea.

In that attack, Johnson allegedly got on top of one officer and repeatedly struck that officer in the face and also hit the other officer in her face, sources added to the paper.

Middle schoolers hit with hate crime charges after allegedly jumping, beating white classmates in 'racially motivated' attack

Police in Broward County, Florida, have charged five middle school students with hate crimes and battery after they allegedly carried out "racially motivated" assaults on white classmates.

What are the details?

The incidents occurred Wednesday morning at the Coconut Creek Recreation Center near Lyons Creek Middle School, WTVJ-TV reported. The center is a place where children gather before school starts.

While at the community center, five young students between the ages of 11 and 15 reportedly charged four white students ages 11 to 12, shouting phrases such as "it's opposite day" and "brown power" while they punched and kicked the victims.

The outlet said an arrest report stated that the group targeted one student, saying, "He is white," before one of the members "tackled him to the ground." Once he was on the ground, "The group of middle school kids to start hitting him with their hands, feet, and phone chargers," the report added.

Another alleged victim told WTVJ that he was attacked right after he had been dropped off at the center. The group of students allegedly ran over to "jump" him and other classmates. He said they were yelling racial slurs and other phrases that made him believe he was attacked solely for being white.

"After they jumped me, they said, this is, like, revenge for what they did in the 1700s for slavery," the student reportedly said.

WSVN-TV reported that the victims claimed they were beaten with sticks and cable cords, as well.

What else?

The five students were each reportedly charged with battery and prejudice while committing battery, which elevates the charges to felonies. Their races have been described as both black and white, most with Hispanic surnames.

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported as a result of the attacks.

In a statement, Coconut Creek Police said, "We are disappointed to take law enforcement action in response to a racially-motivated crime by school-aged children within the city of Coconut Creek. This is an extremely rare occurrence in our community, but these are children, and as such, poor judgment can occur."

The school's principal reportedly sent a robocall to parents, informing them of what happened, and Broward County Public Schools put out a statement classifying the attacks as an off-campus incident.

But one of the alleged victim's parents, Frank Foster, told WSVN that he thinks more should have been done to prevent the attack.

"It’s concerning what’s going on in the school and they don’t really seem to be doing much about it. The steps they take don’t really protect the kids," Foster said. "The options are to go to a different school and run away or be in the same school with the same kids again."

Foster noted that his child is "scared to go back to school."

In an interview with WNTJ, he added, "They can't do anything to the other kids because it didn't happen on school property," presumably in reference to the school district.

TheBlaze reached out to Broward County Public Schools seeking clarification on what actions the district plans to take.

Man who faces 95 years in jail for hate crime robberies targeted Asian women daily, held prejudiced belief that they don't have bank accounts: Court documents

San Jose police recently made six arrests for related hate crime robberies and attacks against Asian American women — but what the primary suspect admitted stunned prosecutors, KGO-TV reported.

What are the details?

Anthony Robinson — who faces up to 95 years in jail — targeted multiple Asian women daily, the station said, and court documents show he deliberately targeted Asian victims based on his prejudiced assumption that they don't believe in bank accounts.

I was told by the SCC DA’s office Anthony Robinson targeted multiple Asian women DAILY.

He’s wake up, find someone to help target Asians b/c he believed “they did not believe in bank accounts….& they were easy victims.” #StopAsianHate #StopAAPIHate

https://abc7ne.ws/30y46bY pic.twitter.com/CX1eD4xLn4

"The callousness of these crimes we could not get past ... you can dehumanize the population literally by treating them as storefronts instead of people," Supervising Deputy District Attorney of Santa Clara County Marisa McKeown told KGO.

Authorities said Robinson, 24, and the other five suspects worked together on more than 70 incidents of robbery, theft, and burglary from October 2020 to September 2021, the San Jose Mercury News said.

The Mercury News reported that, along with Robinson who hails from Stockton, the police released the names of the other suspects: 27-year-old Cameron Alonzo Moody of East Palo Alto, 23-year-old Derje Damond Blanks of San Jose, 24-year-old Hassani Burleson Ramsey of Oakland, 21-year-old Clarence Jackson of East Palo Alto, and 21-year-old Malik Short of Tracy.

All six men were also charged with hate crime enhancements by the county D.A.'s office, the paper added.

McKeown also explained to KGO why three of the men — Short, Ramsey, and Blanks — were released from custody: "Not every member of this criminal group had an equal role. So Anthony Robinson quite clearly was engaged in a voluminous number of incidents, but some other individuals who were involved may have participated in only one or a few incidents, and therefore they stand in very different shoes in terms of the charging decision."

Anything else?

The station said that additional charges for all six men will soon be announced, and McKeown said the investigation is far from complete, noting dozens more unsolved incidents.
