Lightfoot laments 'toxicity' in public discourse — just days after publicly shouting 'F*** Clarence Thomas'

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lamented the loss of "respect for the institutions of our democracy" and "toxicity in our public discourse" in the wake of Monday's mass shooting during a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois. This is the same Lori Lightfoot who just last week publicly shouted "F*** Clarence Thomas," demonstrating a stunning lack of respect for a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

"What it feels like is happening in this moment in our democracy is people are losing respect for the institutions of our democracy," Lightfoot said during a news conference on Tuesday. "The toxicity in our public discourse is a thing I think we should all be concerned about," she added.

"We have got to focus on what brings us together and not what tears us apart, and we've got to get back to respect for each other and respect for community. And that's the thing, I think, that concerns me the most over the arc of the last two years," Lightfoot, who in May urged for a "call to arms," had the audacity to suggest.

Last week, however, the definitely-not-toxic Democrat publicly shouted "F*** Clarence Thomas," ripped into anyone who objected to her wanton lack of respect, and later doubled down with a tweet proudly captioned "I said what I said."

A tweet provided by Townhall.com put Lightfoot's hypocrisy on full display:

Former top FBI official openly questions efficacy of red-flag laws after Highland Park: 'Really calls into question'

How effective are red-flag laws?

That was the question former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, now a CNN analyst, posed on Tuesday after law enforcement disclosed two incidents that could have barred the suspected perpetrator of the Highland Park massacre from obtaining firearms.

What did McCabe say?

Speaking with CNN anchor John Berman, McCabe questioned the efficacy of red-flag laws because, in the case of Highland Park, such laws failed, once again, to thwart a mass killing.

"The heart of what we have been talking about a lot lately [is] these red-flag laws," McCabe said. "So, you know, [there] has been a lot of excitement over the fact that the recent national legislation provides incentive to the states to institute red-flag laws.

"If we have yet another situation where we have a mass shooter who is putting out plenty of signals that possibly his network of associates and family knew about, but yet no word was a ever passed on to law enforcement, really calls into question how effective can these red flag laws possibly be," he added.

“Andy McCabe: Chicago killer was "putting out plenty of signals that possibly his network of associates & family knew about, but yet no word was ever passed on to law enforcement -- really calls into question how effective can these red flag laws possibly be.””
— Tom Elliott (@Tom Elliott) 1657041659

Red-flag laws enable courts to temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals and prohibit them from possessing firearms if a court agrees they pose a significant threat against themselves or others.

Illinois has a red-flag law on the books. However, the suspected perpetrator was never barred from owning firearms despite two incidents in 2019 — an attempted suicide and a threat against his family to "kill everyone" — and other suspicious activity.

A red-flag law in New York state also failed to stop the perpetrator in the Buffalo massacre.

Anything else?

Last month, President Joe Biden signed a new gun bill into law, which lawmakers rushed to pass after mass killings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas. The law, in part, incentivizes the adoption of red-flag laws.

Red-flag laws generally receive bipartisan support. But critics of the measures say they deny Americans their constitutional right to due process. Their constitutionality aside, one wonders what the point of the laws are if they are not stopping mass killings like they are intended to do.

'Clear and present danger': Highland Park suspect flagged years before massacre; police reveal how he obtained firearms

The suspected killer who opened fire on a crowd of innocent people in Highland Park, Illinois, was not only known to law enforcement, but was involved in two previous incidents that might have barred him from obtaining firearms.

What are the details?

The Illinois State Police disclosed on Tuesday that they received a report in September 2019 indicating the now-alleged perpetrator was a "clear and present danger," related to threats he made against his family.

"There were no arrests made in the September 2019 incident and no one, including family, was willing to move forward on a complaint nor did they subsequently provide information on threats or mental health that would have allowed law enforcement to take additional action," an ISP press release explained. "Additionally, no Firearms Restraining Order was filed, nor any order of protection."

The press release does not explain what threats were made, but Lake County sheriff’s office public information officer Christopher Covelli explained at a press conference on Tuesday that the suspected perpetrator had threatened to "kill everyone."

In that incident, police collected 16 knives, a dagger, and a sword, but released the items and determined there was no probable cause for arrest.

The first incident happened five months earlier in April 2019.

"An individual contacted Highland Park Police Department a week after learning of [the alleged suspect] attempting suicide. This was a delayed report, so Highland Park still responded to the residence a week later, spoke with [the alleged suspect], spoke with [the alleged suspect’s] parents, and the matter was being handled by mental health professionals at that time. There was no law enforcement action to be taken. It was a mental health issue and handled by those professionals," Covelli explained.

How did he get firearms?

According to law enforcement, the suspected killer did not possess a Firearm Owners Identification card at the time of September 2019 incident. Illinois law requires a FOID card to own or posses firearms.

However, the suspected perpetrator later obtained a FOID card with the help of his father, ISP explained.

"In December of 2019, at the age of 19, the individual applied for a FOID card. The subject was under 21 and the application was sponsored by the subject’s father," the agency said. "Therefore, at the time of FOID application review in January of 2020, there was insufficient basis to establish a clear and present danger and deny the FOID application."

In a subsequent release, ISP said the suspected killer passed four background checks when purchasing firearms in 2020 and 2021.

The suspect has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder. Dozens of other criminal charges are expected to filed against him.

Whitlock: Highland Park massacre a reminder that only God can resurrect America

It feels like America died yesterday. Dead on the Fourth of July.

That’s how it felt Monday when I learned a gunman killed six and injured at least three dozen more during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

What was born on the Fourth of July – a system of governance predicated on the belief that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with unalienable rights – died on the Fourth of July. For 246 years, that belief united the states of America. That belief is gone now. It’s been eradicated from the minds of too many Americans for this country to remain whole.

The United States of America has been balkanized, polarized, and demonized to the point that we can no longer joyfully and unapologetically celebrate our birthday.

The New York Times, the nation’s alleged newspaper of record, claims the real founding of this country was in 1619 and the real motivation was slavery, not freedom. ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, published a piece Monday denigrating the Fourth and arguing that a three-hour riot at the Capitol, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the demise of Colin Kaepernick’s NFL career, Jack Del Rio calling January 6 a “dust-up,” and Justice Clarence Thomas’ objection to same-sex marriage prove America’s irreparable wickedness.

Half the country sees the American flag as a symbol of oppression and pride as a virtue.

We’re dead. Dead on the Fourth of July.

Robert Crimo, a 22-year-old kid arrested for the Highland Park shooting, allegedly ended what 46-year-old Crispus Attucks started on March 5, 1770. Accurate historians won’t credit Crimo with America’s death. The autopsy will show that the greatest experiment in human history succumbed to the cancer of cultural rot and the rejection of biblical truth. Highland Park, Uvalde, Waukesha, the summer of George Floyd riots, the COVID lockdowns, the family-friendly drag queen grooming, the New York Times 1619 Project, Trump derangement, critical race theory, and the vilification of law enforcement are all byproducts of the cultural decay.

Those of you hoping midterm elections will save this country will be greatly disappointed. Politics cannot fix what’s wrong with America. There are no political solutions to spiritual problems.

America is in need of a resurrection, a miracle, a spiritual rebirth.

Our current culture will continue to manufacture Robert Crimos the same way factory assembly lines produce SUVs. American culture is narcissistic by any means necessary and views the right to kill as fundamental to freedom.

The alleged killer Crimo sought attention and worth through the celebration of death. Like the Waukesha alleged mass murderer, Darrell Brooks, Crimo fashioned himself a rapper. Using the name “Awake,” Crimo rapped inside a classroom and insinuated he might one day shoot schoolchildren. YouTube has taken down his content.

Why?

Crimo’s rap content is no different, no more demonic, than the standard commercialized and celebrated rap music. A rapper in Florida, YNW Melly, sits in jail today waiting to be tried this summer for two cases of premeditated murder. Melly’s most popular song, which has more than 500 million views on YouTube, is "Murder on My Mind." It’s every bit as wicked and demented as Crimo’s rap content.

Crimo and Melly simply mimic the content of rap music’s biggest stars. Watch Dr. Dre and Ice Cube’s "Natural Born Killaz" video. Watch Snoop Dogg’s "Murder Was the Case." It’s an ode celebrating the deal Snoop cut with Satan. Watch 50 Cent’s "Many Men." It celebrates a revenge killing.

American culture is sick and depraved.

Educators are fighting for the right to talk with 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds about sexuality and gender. An adult talking about sex with kids was considered perversion in my childhood. Now we’re bringing drag queens into schools and libraries to teach kids to read. The people who object to this perversion are deemed villains.

The rejection of religious faith has empowered a culture of fear. We shut down the country because of COVID, a bad version of the flu. We denied kids an education because of COVID. We forced kids to wear masks and avoid interaction because of fear of COVID. We stole two years of their childhood out of fear.

American culture is sick and depraved.

Elle Duncan, an ESPN broadcaster, released a video encouraging so-called “girl dads” to fight for abortion rights. She argued that women’s freedom is directly related to their access to abortion. Modern American culture is obsessed with murder. It’s reflected in our music, our TV shows, our perception of freedom.

We have rejected God’s natural order.

This nation’s founding documents were based on God’s natural order. This country was built for families. Family is at the center of a biblical worldview. The Founding Fathers could not predict that this country would abandon God’s prescribed family structure – man, woman, and children. How could they see that future?

In the 1700s, family was essential to survival. Men and women absolutely needed each other for survival. We still do. But we’ve convinced ourselves that we don’t. Technological advances have fooled us into believing that families are luxury items. Before the industrial revolution, when most work was backbreaking and hunting and farming were necessary for eating, women believed men were necessary and a force for good. The laws and customs established during that time frame reflected man’s essentialness to survival and woman’s essentialness to reproduction.

Two hundred years later, we look back and call those men and women unenlightened. Were they? I’m not so sure.

As it relates to family, we’re far more unenlightened than the founders. We don’t believe in family. We think it’s optional and unimportant. We think there’s no penalty for killing a child in the womb or walking away from a marriage when things turn difficult.

We think the Second Amendment, which grants us the ability to protect our rights, is destroying America. The destruction of family and the abandonment of God are destroying America.

The attack on God, family, and guns killed America.

Crimo is also known as "Awake the Rapper," according to Fox News.

IMDb describes Crimo as "an American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor and director from Chicago, IL. The hip hop phenom is mostly known for his hit song 'On My Mind' which was released on October 8, 2018. The track has amassed millions of plays so far across online streaming platforms."

The IMDb listing states that Crimo was born on Sept. 20, 2000.

Sgt. Christopher Covelli – from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force – said law enforcement recovered a rifle from the crime scene of the Fourth of July shooting. Covelli noted that the shooter appears to have been "shooting from a roof."

Covelli said Crimo is “from the area” of Chicago’s northern suburbs.

The ages of the victims ranged from eight to 85.

One of the alleged victims is Nicolas Toledo – who was reportedly 79 years old.

"We are all feeling pretty numb. We're all pretty broken inside," Toledo's granddaughter told WBBM-TV.

Active shooting situation at 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois leaves at least 5 dead, 16 injured

A mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois on Monday has left at least five people dead and 16 more injured, officials said.

Police are urging the public to stay away from the downtown area of the suburb, which sits north of Chicago, as they conduct a manhunt for the shooter.

The shooting happened a little after 10 a.m. local time, WMAQ-TV reports. The Lake County Sheriff's office and other law enforcement departments are assisting Highland Park Police with the shooting response.

"STAY OUT OF THE AREA — allow law-enforcement and first responders to do their work," the sheriff's office tweeted.

Illinois State Police said the shooting situation is "active."

"The Illinois State Police is currently assisting Highland Park PD with an active shoot situation that occurred at the Highland Park Parade," the state police said.

"Highland Park Police are responding to an active shooter incident that occurred in downtown Highland Park during the 4th of July parade," the city of Highland Park said in a statement. "This is an active incident. All individuals are advised to shelter in place. Law enforcement agencies are searching for the suspect; evidence of a firearm has been recovered. Numerous law enforcement officers are responding and have secured a perimeter around downtown Highland Park. 16 people have been transferred to the hospital; 5 individuals are confirmed deceased."

Witnesses told local news station WMAQ that parade spectators thought the sound of gunfire was part of the parade at first.

"You heard like a 'pop, pop, pop,' and I think everybody kinda thought maybe it was a display on one of the floats, and then it just opened up," witness Larry Bloom said.

"I was screaming and people were screaming," he said. "They were panicking and they were just scattering and I, you know, we didn't know. You know, it was right on top of us."

The rest of the Fourth of July festivities in Highland Park have been canceled as police continue the search for the shooter, the city of Highland Park said.

The neighboring city of Evanston has also canceled their holiday celebrations.

"Due to a tragic mass shooting that took place earlier this morning in Highland Park, the City of Evanston will be canceling this year’s 4th of July Parade and celebrations effective immediately," city officials said.

The mass shooting follows a violent holiday weekend in Chicago. At least 54 people had been shot, seven fatally, as of Monday morning.
