Man pulls up to his house, spots burglar taking items from it. Suspect allegedly charges at homeowner, who's trying to hold him — so homeowner shoots him.

A homeowner in Mobile, Alabama, pulled up to his house last week and spotted a burglar taking items from the residence and its detached garage, WALA-TV reported.

What happened next?

Police told the station the homeowner tried to hold the burglar — but the suspect got aggressive and charged at the homeowner.

With that, the homeowner shot the suspect, WALA said, adding that the incident took place around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of North Ann Street.

After getting treatment for a gunshot wound, police arrested Johnny Bullard Jr., 42, and took him to Mobile County Metro Jail, the station said.

Bullard was charged with third-degree burglary, and jail records indicate he was still behind bars as of Monday afternoon.

Police said the homeowner who pulled the trigger won't be charged at this time and that people have a right under state law to defend themselves, WALA reported.

Anything else?

Dina Zirlott, who lives on the street, told the station she was helping her kids study at the time of the incident.

“And we were going over the regions of Alabama when we heard like a loud pop. And we all kind of hunched down at the table ... we weren’t sure what it was,” Zirlott recounted to WAGA.

She and other residents added to the station that the sound of gunfire is a frequent occurrence.

“You do hear some gunfire around this area, and usually it comes from behind us,” she explained to WAGA. “But every once in a while, you’ll hear it coming from around the street. And just a few weeks ago my husband woke us up in the middle of the night because we had a huge police presence on our road.”

Gun-wielding homeowner with deadly aim stops dangerous, middle-of-night crime spree that resulted in multiple injuries

A Mississippi homeowner armed with a gun — and a deadly aim — stopped a dangerous, middle-of-the-night crime spree that resulted in multiple injuries Tuesday.

What are the details?

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a disturbance call around 4 a.m. about a man who had threatened people at a house, WLBT-TV reported.

However, the man in question departed the scene before deputies got there, the station said.

But while deputies still were at the house, they received a call about someone breaking into another residence and assaulting two men there before leaving, WLBT said.

Then when deputies arrived at the second house, they not only discovered two people had been assaulted there but also that a neighbor had been attacked, the station said.

While deputies gathered details about the aforementioned assaults, they received yet another 911 call about a man attempting to break into another home, WLBT reported.

As deputies arrived at the third reported crime scene, they heard a gunshot at a nearby residence, the station said.

Arriving deputies found a man at the home who had been shot while trying to hit someone with his car, WLBT reported.

The man in question was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the station said.

An investigation found that the suspect was involved in every disturbance, WLBT said.

Two of the man's victims were treated at a hospital for various injuries, the station said, adding that the homeowner who killed the suspect wasn't charged.

Woman catches burglar in her home, holds him at gunpoint while waiting for police. When he makes a threatening move, she opens fire.

A homeowner in Vicksburg, Mississippi, defended herself and her property with a firearm Thursday morning.

What happened?

According to the Vicksburg Daily News, the woman arrived at the home just after 11 a.m. Thursday to perform a daily check when she discovered a burglary in progress at her residence.

She fired what she described as a warning shot before briefly exiting the home, alerting neighbors and telling them to call the police.

Investigators said the woman then re-entered the home and attempted to hold the burglar at gunpoint until police arrived. But when the burglar made a "threatening move," the homeowner felt compelled to open fire, striking the burglar in the arm, WAPT-TV reported.

A few minutes later, the burglar, reportedly a young man, showed up at the nearby River City Rescue Mission suffering from a gunshot wound to his forearm.

The suspect's injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. According to investigators, he was treated by paramedics before being transported to the Vicksburg Police station for processing. He will reportedly be charged with burglary.

The homeowner was also reportedly taken to the station for processing but is not expected to be charged because her actions are likely protected by the castle doctrine.

What else?

Neighbor Sharon Flowers said that she had just arrived at her home Thursday morning when she heard the woman shouting for help. Flowers told the Vicksburg Daily News that she alerted the police at the homeowner's request before witnessing the second shot being fired.

"The silence was terrifying," she recalled. "You couldn't see anything, you didn't see anyone move, it was silence."

Under Mississippi's castle doctrine — similar to "stand your ground" laws — the homeowner was legally permitted to fire upon the intruder.

According to the state's legal code, "a person who is not the initial aggressor and is not engaged in unlawful activity shall have no duty to retreat before using deadly force ... if the person is in a place where the person has a right to be, and no finder of fact shall be permitted to consider the person's failure to retreat as evidence that the person's use of force was unnecessary, excessive or unreasonable."
