Concealed carrier reportedly opens fire on intruder who broke into his Chicago home after midnight, charged at him



A licensed concealed carrier opened fire on an intruder who broke into his Chicago home after midnight Monday and charged at him, CWB Chicago reported.

The 33-year-old victim called 911 at 1:24 a.m. and said he shot an intruder inside his home in the 2200 block of East 103rd Street — and had started CPR on him, the outlet said.

'Homeowner clearly was in fear of being killed! That’s a justification!'

The intruder was shot in the chest, the outlet said.

His victim's home is across the street from the South Chicago (4th) District police station, the outlet added.

Arriving officers took over lifesaving measures, but the intruder was pronounced dead at 1:43 a.m., the outlet said.

The intruder remained a “John Doe” as of Monday evening, CWB Chicago noted, adding that detectives are investigating the shooting.

The homeowner said he did not know the intruder, WBBM-TV reported.

The residence where the shooting took place is in the Far South Side’s Deering neighborhood, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Armed male enters Florida home, won't leave — then threatens homeowner while advancing toward him. But victim also is armed.



An armed male recently entered a Florida home and refused to leave — and then threatened the homeowner while advancing toward him, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said.

But the homeowner had a gun on hand — and used it.

'Stand your ground, baby!'

The sheriff's office in a Tuesday news release said deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the 5400 block of Touraine Drive around 9:40 p.m. Feb. 6 and discovered a male suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene. The incident occurred in Tallahassee.

Detectives determined the male in question entered the home uninvited and refused to leave after the homeowner's repeated requests, officials said.

What's more, the male then threatened the homeowner with a weapon while advancing toward him, officials said.

With that, the homeowner used a semiautomatic handgun to fire a single shot at the male, which struck him, officials said.

The male was taken to a hospital in critical condition, officials said.

After an investigation, deputies identified and arrested 42-year-old Scott Scruggs on charges of burglary of a structure while armed and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, officials said.

Scruggs remained hospitalized following the incident and was taken into custody upon his release from the hospital, officials said, adding that Scruggs is now behind bars in the Leon County Detention Facility.

Jail records indicate there is no release date assigned to Scruggs; there is no bond for his burglary charge; his bond for his aggravated assault charge is $2,500.

Jail records also note Scruggs has a long criminal history dating back to 2008 filled with charges that include battery, trespassing, criminal mischief, burglary, resisting arrest, theft, reckless driving, and drug possession.

'Should have shot him a couple more times': Canadian leader triggers woke foes after homeowner opens fire on alleged intruder



After a gun-toting homeowner in Ontario, Canada, opened fire and wounded an alleged intruder earlier this week, Premier Doug Ford lauded the homeowner and said intruders "need to be shot," the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

"Congratulations for shooting this guy — should have shot him a couple more times as far as I'm concerned," Ford replied after being asked about the incident during an unrelated news conference Wednesday, according to the CBC.

'We have seen far too many of these incidents involving individuals who were already known to police and out on release orders, highlighting a deeply broken bail system that is failing our communities.'

Ford also upbraided the Canadian government for "going after legal, law-abiding gun owners" and "weak-kneed judges" for letting suspects walk, the outlet noted.

"They always want to protect the bad guys, the judges always want to protect the Charter rights," Ford said, according to the CBC. "How about the charter of rights of the people to keep them safe rather than always protecting these criminals. I'm just sick and tired of it."

Opposition Leader Marit Stiles of the New Democratic Party called Ford's statement "very irresponsible nonsense" while speaking with reporters Wednesday morning, the outlet said.

"This premier has been premier of this province for eight long years now," she said, according to the CBC. "If people in Ontario feel less safe today, then that's on him as the premier of this province."

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner also used the term "irresponsible" to describe Ford's words in a statement to the outlet: "It is irresponsible for the premier to be making comments encouraging violence or celebrating the loss of life. He should focus on investing in measures that will make our province safer and empower first responders to do their jobs to serve and protect our communities.”

This wasn't the first time Ford has spoken out amid such matters. After a homeowner was charged with aggravated assault for fighting and injuring an armed male who allegedly broke into his Lindsay, Ontario, residence last year, Ford said that "something is broken" in the system when one is punished for self-defense. The CBC last month reported that the homeowner in question no longer will face prosecution.

In regard to this week's incident, York Regional Police said no charges were being filed against the homeowner who used a "legally owned" and "properly stored" gun.

Police said a middle-aged man and an elderly woman were home at the time of the incident, and no one living at the home was injured, the CBC reported.

A police press release issued Wednesday said officers responded just before 1 a.m. Tuesday to reports of a shooting at a Vaughan home in the area of Carrville Woods Circle and Crimson Forest Drive, near Rutherford Road and Dufferin Street.

Officials said multiple suspects allegedly armed with at least one gun forced their way into the home and that the suspects later were seen getting into a black pickup truck and fleeing the scene.

Police on Tuesday released video of the incident showing masked suspects entering and leaving the home, the CBC said, adding that rapid gunfire can be heard as they run from the residence to the truck.

The male who was shot had been dropped off at a Toronto-area hospital shortly after the incident, the police press release said.

Police said Trestin Cassanova-Alman,a 24-year-old male with no fixed address, is facing charges of robbery with a firearm and disguise with intent as well with breaching a probation order "as he was on an outstanding probation order for unrelated offenses at the time of the home invasion."

Cassanova-Alman is in stable condition in the hospital in police custody, the news release said.

At least one politician in the area appears squarely on Ford's side — the mayor of the city where the shooting took place.

Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca in a social media statement posted Wednesday said he's thankful the homeowner wasn't charged given that it was an act of self-defense.

"We have seen far too many of these incidents involving individuals who were already known to police and out on release orders, highlighting a deeply broken bail system that is failing our communities," the mayor said.

Male breaks window of home after midnight. Homeowner warns him he has a gun — then uses it when intruder keeps advancing.



A male broke the window of a Pennsylvania home after midnight Monday and demanded to be let in. But the awakened homeowner warned him he had a gun — and then pulled the trigger when the intruder kept advancing.

State police said in a news release on X that troopers were called to a home on Locust Street in Somerset Township around 2 a.m. for the reported shooting, KDKA-TV reported. Somerset Township is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

'Another one bites the dust.'

Investigators found one person dead near the rear of the residence with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, the station said.

State police said the homeowner told investigators he woke up when a male demanding to be let in the residence was banging on his kitchen window, KDKA said.

The station, citing the news release, reported that the male soon broke a window and tried to enter the home.

The homeowner told authorities he warned the male that he was armed and then shot him when he continued trying to enter the home, KDKA said.

While the homeowner was detained and taken to the state police barracks in Somerset, a preliminary investigation found that the homeowner was acting in self-defense, the station said.

The identity of the fatally shot male was not released as of Monday evening, KDKA said.

No other information was released Monday, the station said, adding that those with information can contact the state police barracks in Somerset at 814-445-4104. State police told KDKA the investigation is continuing.

Somerset County District Attorney Tom Leiden previously reported that no charges have been filed at this time, and there is no danger to the public, according to WJAC-TV.

Female, 46, forces her way into home, attacks homeowner, cops say. But it's yet another poorly chosen home invasion target.



A 46-year-old female forced her way into an Iowa home over the weekend and attacked the homeowner, police said. But the homeowner was armed with a gun and used it to shut down the attack.

Des Moines police were called just before 11 p.m. Saturday to a residence in the 1500 block of Guthrie Avenue in the Union Park neighborhood after a 911 caller said an intruder was attacking the homeowner, KCCI-TV reported.

Investigators told KCCI the homeowner reported hearing someone yelling in the back yard — and then someone banging on the back door.

While officers were on their way to the home, the caller told dispatchers the intruder had been shot, the station said.

When officers arrived, they found Stannita Wilson inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds, KCCI said.

Officers provided first aid until Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel arrived and transported Wilson to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center for treatment, the station said.

Investigators told KCCI the homeowner reported hearing someone yelling in the back yard — and then someone banging on the back door.

When the homeowner unlocked the door, Wilson allegedly forced her way inside and began assaulting the resident, the station said.

But the homeowner was armed with a handgun and shot Wilson during the incident, police told KCCI.

Wilson’s injuries were described as minor, the station said.

After she was treated and released from the hospital, KCCI reported that Wilson was charged with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony.

Police added to the station that Wilson was not known to the homeowner — and as of Sunday, no charges had been filed against the homeowner.

Radio Iowa indicated that the homeowner is a male.

The incident remains under investigation, KCCI said.

Crook breaks into home late at night, points shotgun at homeowner. But victim also has gun and teaches crook painful lesson.



Police in Redlands, California, said officers responded to a call of shots fired shortly before midnight Thursday at a home in the 1500 block of Church Street. Redlands is about 15 minutes southeast of San Bernardino.

Police said the homeowner arrived at his residence and armed himself with a handgun before checking his house — after which he confronted an intruder, who pointed a shotgun at the homeowner.

'Mr. Carrion should have been IN Church, not ON Church Street.'

The homeowner won the gun battle.

Police said the homeowner shot the intruder and then immediately exited the residence to call 911.

Arriving officers cleared the home and followed a blood trail that led to the back yard, where they found the suspect suffering from a single gunshot wound, police said.

What's more, the suspect had property from the home on his person, police said.

Police also recovered the shotgun, which the suspect found inside the home in question, authorities added.

Daniel Torres Carrion, 52, of Redlands was arrested for attempted robbery, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Carrion later was discharged from the hospital and booked at West Valley Detention Center, where he was being held in lieu of $300,000 bail, police said.

Gun-wielding male kicks down door of home, opens fire at homeowner. But his target is armed too.



Law enforcement in Alexandria, Louisiana, responded to the 1800 block of Henry Street just after 7:30 a.m. Saturday for a reported home invasion, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office said. Alexandria is about 200 miles northwest of New Orleans.

Officials said a black male identified as 33-year-old Davante Deundra Thomas of Alexandria allegedly kicked down the door of the residence armed with a handgun and fired at the homeowner.

'People have a right to protect themselves.'

But the homeowner also had a gun — and wasted no time using it.

Officials said the homeowner returned fire, striking Thomas.

After deputies arrived, Thomas was found dead inside the home with the gun still in his hand, officials said.

Sheriff’s detectives and the Crime Scene Unit responded and began their investigation and processed the scene for evidence, officials said.

The sheriff's office said no arrests have been made.

3 armed thugs wearing ski masks allegedly break into Texas home. But homeowner also has gun — and simply does what Texans do.



Police responded to a home invasion call in the 1400 block of East Maddox Avenue in Fort Worth, Texas, just before 3:15 a.m. Friday, KDFW-TV reported.

According to police, the caller told dispatchers that several men wearing ski masks and carrying guns broke into his house, the station said.

'The guy ran and jumped in a white truck. ... Then I heard him after saying, "Help, help, help!"'

The homeowner used a gun in self-defense, KDFW reported, adding that the suspects returned fire.

The homeowner escaped the house through a window and called 911, the station noted, and the suspects fled the home and ran from the scene.

The homeowner cut his leg on glass while fleeing the residence, KDFW said, adding that the homeowner's injuries were minor and not life-threatening.

However, another male just a block away — in the 1400 block of East Myrtle Street — called 911 when police arrived, the station said.

Turns out this guy told authorities he'd been shot and needed assistance, KDFW said.

He was identified as 23-year-old Anthony Baeza; he faces a charge of burglary of a habitation, the station said.

First responders transported Baeza to a nearby hospital, where he had been in critical condition, KDFW said.

Alleged backyard burglar charges at homeowner while holding an unknown object, cops say. But homeowner is holding a gun.



California deputies responded just before 6 a.m. Monday to a residence in Taft regarding a reported burglary in progress, officials told KGET-TV. Taft is about 45 minutes southwest of Bakersfield.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office told the station that the homeowner confronted an alleged burglar in his backyard in the 300 block of Montview Avenue.

'We have the right to defend ourselves.'

The alleged burglar — whom investigators later identified as 36-year-old Felix Cortez Villasenor — was said to have charged at the homeowner while holding an unknown object, KGET said.

The homeowner also was holding an object — a gun.

Deputies said the homeowner shot Villasenor, the station reported.

The sheriff's office said Villasenor was airlifted to Kern Medical and was in the intensive care unit as of Tuesday, KGET said.

He was absentee-booked into the Kern County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary — and on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, the station said.

The sheriff's office told KGET that investigators will submit the case to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Male allegedly threatens to kill homeowner, bangs on door after midnight. But victim isn't playing — and shoots through door.



A male allegedly threatened to "kill" a homeowner in San Antonio, Texas, as he banged on the front door of the residence after midnight Thursday.

When the suspect tried to open the door, the homeowner fired through the door and wounded the male.

'FAFO situation. Don’t start none there won’t be none.'

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. in the 7700 block of Ingram Road near Culebra Road on the west side of town, KENS-TV reported, adding that the male is in his 40s.

Police told WOAI-TV that the male reportedly was banging on the door and making menacing threats.

Investigators added to WOAI that video from the scene showed the suspect banging on the door, waking up the homeowner, and demanding that the door be opened.

The suspect left but returned and began banging on the door again, WOAI said.

The homeowner told police that the suspect was threatening that he was going to "get inside and kill him," WOAI added.

When the suspect tried to open the front door, the homeowner fired through the door, striking the suspect in the left arm, WOAI said.

The suspect was rushed to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, WOAI noted, adding that police said he will be charged with attempted burglary with intent to assault.

The investigation is ongoing, WOAI noted. There's no word on whether charges will be filed against the homeowner, KENS said.
