'Get out before I kill you!' Carjacker presses gun against Uber driver's head — but victim doesn't allow things to go down without a fight

Video captured inside a vehicle in Houston shows a carjacker pressing a gun against an Uber driver's head and ordering him to "get out before I kill you!"

However, KRIV-TV reported that the driver wasn't about to let the crime proceed without a fight.

What are the details?

While the crime took place Oct. 18 last year, Houston Police Robbery released video of the terrifying encounter Tuesday.

KRIV said the driver — named Dovran — picked up two riders around 4 p.m. near Westheimer and South Voss Roads. The station said that during the ride, the pair changed their drop-off location to an apartment complex on Dunvale Road.

But when the driver reached that location, things turned violent, KRIV said.

One of the suspects — who wasn't wearing a mask over his face — reached forward and tried to grab Dovran's phone.

Then the second suspect — who was wearing blue surgical mask — took things further.

"The second one put a gun to my head," Dovran recalled to the station.

At that point, the first rider is seen exiting the vehicle — and Dovran told KRIV that the first rider "pulled the driver's door, and tried to pull me out, but I was holding tight."

Despite a gun being held to his head, Dovran battled back.

The station said a struggle ensued, and Dovran managed to drive off — except the gunman was still in the back seat.

"He was holding a gun to my head, he was screaming, 'Stop the car, or I'll shoot you,'" Dovran recounted to the station. "I didn't stop, and then lucky for me, he decided to jump out."

KRIV said Dovran sustained only a few scratches, and a station reporter asked him how he managed to fight back and refuse the carjacker's orders with a gun pressed against his head.

"I don't know, I didn't think about it," he told the station, adding that it still was "scary."

Asked if he'd do anything differently with hindsight, Dovran told KRIV, "No."

Dovran still drives for Uber but told KRIV he's being more cautious about whom he picks up and where he does it.

Crime Stoppers is offering $5,000 for any tips leading to the suspects' arrests, the station said.

Anything else?

The station said Uber issued the following statement: "The actions of the riders shown in the video were chilling to watch, and we are grateful the driver wasn’t injured. We removed the rider’s [sic] access and have reached out to the driver to offer support. We look forward to assisting police in identifying those responsible."

KRIV noted that Uber recently rolled out a rider verification feature to add an extra layer of protection for drivers, saying that if a driver feels unsafe, the driver can end the ride immediately.

After their dad is shot and killed while driving, brothers — ages 6 and 8 — steer car safely off the road and alert police

Two young brothers, ages 6 and 8, steered a vehicle safely off a freeway last week after their father was shot and killed while driving.

What happened?

Police in Houston, Texas, said a 29-year-old man was driving along Interstate 10 near Federal Road Friday night when he was shot once in the head and died.

The man's two young sons, who were in the vehicle with him, first thought someone had thrown a rock at the car after hearing a singular pop. But once they realized something much worse had happened, they were forced to act quickly to save their own lives, KPRC-TV reported.

"When they saw their father slump over in his seat, they took control of the vehicle, using the steering wheel to guide it off the freeway and down the service road near Holland Avenue," the local news outlet reported. "Once the vehicle came to a rest, they immediately got out of the car and sought the help of a woman exiting a Chili's restaurant nearby."

When police arrived on the scene, they located the father dead in the vehicle. The two boys, however, did not sustain any injuries in the incident.

What else?

Investigators are now working to determine what the motive was in the shooting.

"Right now we don't know if it was a road rage incident, we're not really sure what exactly occurred," Houston Police Lieutenant R. Willkens told KPRC. "Our detectives are on the scene and hopefully we'll figure out who did this."

Police said the suspect was driving a white passenger car and are urging anyone with information to reach out to Crime Stoppers.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Sunday a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of those involved in the fatal shooting.

The shooting was reportedly one of at least three violent shooting incidents in Houston within a 12-hour period, though none of the incidents are believed to be related.

Houston police discover over 90 people crammed inside suspected stash house in 'disturbing' human smuggling case

More than 90 people were discovered crammed inside a Houston area home on Friday, and authorities believe those found are victims of human smuggling.

Houston police received several tips about a possible kidnapping on Thursday night. Law enforcement started an all-night investigation, which led SWAT officers to execute a search warrant at the house in Houston's southwest side on Friday morning.

"When we got into the house we realized that there were over 90 people inside," Assistant Chief D.B. Edwards told reporters. "When they got inside the house, they realized that this is actually gonna turn into a human smuggling investigation."

Edwards said the "disturbing" human smuggling case included about five women and the rest were men. There were no children found inside the home on Chessington Drive.

"They were found in basic clothing and were all huddled together in two sections of the two-story home," KHOU reported. "Police said they were not tied up."

Edwards said the house was mostly unfurnished, with mattresses leaning against the walls.

Police said the dozens of people inside the house had not eaten in a while, so authorities provided food and water.

There are concerns that many of the human smuggling victims could have COVID-19 since some said they had coronavirus symptoms, including fever and loss of taste and smell. Police called in the health department to test the people, and were considering quarantining the victims while they receive medical care inside the house.

The 2,319-square-foot home with five bedrooms and two baths was being rented to a single man, according to Fox News.

Neighbors didn't suspect anything unusual and were not aware that over 90 people were in the home.

"We always ask the community if you see something say something ... we all need to work together," Edwards said.

Homeland Security Investigations said it is working with the Houston Police Department on the suspected human smuggling case.

"Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is working with the Houston Police Department to investigate the suspected stash house discovered at 12210 Chessington Drive in Houston, Texas," HSI said.
