Joy Reid says no one used the word inflation until Republicans taught them what it means to damage Democrats

MSNBC anchor Joy Reid said that no one used the word inflation until Republicans taught them what it means in order to damage Democrats.

The bizarre charge was made by Reid on the progressive news channel Thursday.

"The only people you ever really hear use the word inflation are journalists and economists. Right? So that is not a part of the normal lexicon," she claimed.

"So it's interesting that Republicans are doing something they don't normally do, right, which is not use the common tongue, not use just common English, like do on their campaigns, like they do with crime," Reid continued.

"But what they've done is they've taught people the word inflation. Right? Most people who would have never used that word ever in their lives are using it now because they’ve been taught it. Including on TV, including in newspapers, they’ve been taught this word," she added.

"And they sort of wrap this word around whatever it is that they really want to vote, you know, the reason they really want to vote," Reid concluded.

Video of Reid's claims were circulated on social media and ridiculed by many on the right.

The Biden administration has tried to explain away high inflation by blaming the Russian war in Ukraine and supply chain issues caused by the global lockdown response to the coronavirus pandemic. However, polling shows that a plurality of Americans blame Biden's high spending policies for the damaging rise in prices.

In May, Steve Rattner, who worked for the Obama administration, admitted that most economists were saying Biden's spending was like tossing gasoline onto a fire in relation to inflation.

Meanwhile, Joy Reid's ratings are about as low as inflation is high. In April, her show garnered the lowest ratings in its entire two year span, both in overall viewers and among the most important demographic ages.

'Morning Joe' shouts down Obama-era adviser after he says 'most economists' would agree Biden's stimulus tossed gasoline on the fire of inflation

A former advisor for the Obama administration admitted that President Joe Biden's big spending was "gasoline" on the fire of inflation before an MSNBC host shouted him down to defend the president.

Joe Scarborough asked Steve Rattner what Republicans could pin on Biden as his responsibility for the high inflation hurting Americans, but he yelled at him after Rattner pointed to proposals for more spending.

"You had the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan which was passed early in his administration which handed out a bunch of stimulus checks," Rattner replied.

"No Republican votes on that," Scarborough interjected.

"No Republican votes on that," Rattner agreed. "And which candidly, I think most economists at this point would say was putting a bit of gasoline on a fire that was starting to raise but that would be your centerpiece. And then remember Biden wanted to propose another six and a half trillion ..."

"Yeah, but he didn't though!" Scarborough interrupted. "And see that's the thing, when Republicans ..."

"But you're asking me," Rattner broke in.

"No! No! No! No! No!" Scarborough yelled back. "But what I'm asking is, what is he responsible for? His words didn't fuel inflation!"

Scarborough went on to rattle out a list of other causes for inflation that had little or nothing to do with Biden, and Rattner generally agreed with him.

Earlier in the segment, Scarborough pointed out that Rattner had been one of the few voices warning the Biden administration that its big-spending policies would lead to damaging inflation but that he was ignored.

Rattner also said that even though it appeared that inflation had plateaued, there was little or nothing Biden could do before the midterm elections that would alleviate the problem enough to change Americans' minds about it.

Rattner worked as a counselor to the treasury secretary under President Barack Obama.
