Gun control proponents pounce on Republican senator after Nashville shooting

Leftists pounced on GOP Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee after the lawmaker issued a statement reacting to the deadly school shooting perpetrated at a Christian school in Nashville on Monday.

The shooter, who killed three children and three adults at The Covenant School, was fatally shot by police.

"Chuck & I are heartbroken to hear about the shooting at Covenant School in Nashville," Blackburn tweeted. "My office is in contact with federal, state, & local officials, & we stand ready to assist. Thank you to the first responders working on site. Please join us in prayer for those affected."

California Gov. Gavin Newsom responded to Blackburn's post by calling on the senator to approve "commonsense gun laws."

"You received $1,306,130 in donations from the NRA. You voted against the most recent bipartisan gun package in June. If you're so 'ready to assist' -- start by doing your job and passing commonsense gun laws that will help prevent tragedies like the one today," Newsom tweeted.

Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez of California claimed that Blackburn does not care about doing anything to protect children, tweeting, "0. That's how many f— you give when it comes to actually doing something to protect our kids."

“Hey @MarshaBlackburn here are some numbers for you:

$1,306,130. That’s how much money you received from the NRA.

129. That’s how many mass shootings there have been this year.

0. That’s how many f— you give when it comes to actually doing something to protect our kids.”

Gun control activist David Hogg, who was a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, when a mass shooting was perpetrated there in 2018, suggested that Blackburn and others have enabled school shootings to occur.

"Let me re write that for you. Chuck & I are heartbroken to hear about the shooting at Covenant School in Nashville that was enabled by NRA puppets like me who are willing to let kids be f[***]ing slaughtered so long as the NRA continues giving me millions," Hogg replied to Blackburn's post.

Blackburn is calling for increased security at schools to protect students.

“We must take steps to protect our children by increasing the number of school safety officers.”

Democrats threaten retaliation against Republicans over move to censure Rep. Maxine Waters

Democrats are threatening retaliation after House Republicans forced a vote on censuring Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) over her incendiary comments related to the Derek Chauvin trial.

Republicans took action against Waters after she urged protesters in Minnesota last weekend to "get more confrontational" if Chauvin was found not guilty in the death of George Floyd. The judge who presided over Chauvin's trial later rebuked Waters for her comments, and admitted Chauvin's attorneys could use them to argue for a mistrial in appeal.

What are the details?

Prior to addressing the censure measure against Waters, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) warned Republicans their measure would make it "harder" to justify not taking action against Republicans in the future.

"As my friend — [House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy], knows — we haven't had all the resolutions that have been introduced on my side of the aisle," Hoyer said, The Hill reported. "This makes it harder, however, not to proceed on numerous resolutions on my side of the aisle."

More from The Hill:

The threat underscores how lawmakers have fewer qualms about imposing punishments as severe as censure or expulsion against each other as they continue to harbor fury over the insurrection more than three months ago. It's also a reflection of an ever-more-polarized environment where lawmakers are quicker to turn to demanding maximum sanctions when they're outraged over conduct by members of the opposing party.

Now, Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez (Calif.) is already pursuing renewed action against one Republican.

On Tuesday, Gomez announced he would revive efforts to expel Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from Congress.

Gomez initially introduced a measure to expel Greene in March, alleging the freshman Republican "advocated violence against our peers, the speaker and our government." Gomez said at the time, "[A]ny member who incites political violence and threatens our lives must be expelled."

Now, Gomez said he would now use Greene's alleged attempt to start the so-called "America First Caucus" as an incentive to get more Democrats to join his effort against Greene.

"[E]veryone — including House Republican leadership — knew this stunt was nothing more than an effort to promote white supremacy in the United States Congress," Gomez wrote to Democrats in a letter.

"From her open support for political violence against our colleagues to her brazen promotion of anti-Semitism and racism, there is no shortage of reasons as to why Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is unfit to serve in this legislative body. I hope everyone — both Republicans and Democrats — will join me in this endeavor to ensure our collective safety and preserve our democracy," he added.

Anything else?

Democrats ultimately killed the effort to censure Waters. The motion to punish Waters was tabled in a vote that split down party lines.
