Ilhan Omar claims a Jim Jordan speakership would mean 'more chaos in the house and electoral harm'

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota highlighted an old quote in which former House Speaker John Boehner had described Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio as "a legislative terrorist."

"Jordan was a terrorist as a legislator going back to his days in the Ohio House and Senate," Boehner said, according to a years-old Politico Magazine piece. "A terrorist. A legislative terrorist."

Omar shared Boehner's quote and then opined, "It should be interesting how things go after Republicans elect Jordan Speaker tomorrow. It would certainly bring more chaos in the house and electoral harm."

Last week, the House GOP voted 124-81 to nominate Jordan for the speakership, but in order to clinch the role in a full House vote, Jordan will need much more GOP support.

It took 15 rounds of balloting before Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) won the speakership earlier this year. He was ousted from the role of House speaker earlier this month, and so far, Republicans have failed to fill the slot.

"The role of a Speaker is to bring all Republicans together. That's what I intend to do," Jordan wrote in an Oct. 16 letter to colleagues. "We will make sure there are more Republican voices involved in our major decisions beyond the Five Families. Our goal will be to empower our committees and committee chairs to take the lead on the House's legislative work through regular order. This will bring us together to pass responsible legislation to fund our government and support our military. I will tirelessly work to defend and expand our majority and help every Republican member back at home."

The Secret to McCarthy's Success

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) notched a victory for himself and for Republicans with Wednesday's passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023. The bill will raise the debt ceiling through 2025, claw back pandemic and IRS spending, improve welfare programs, speed up permitting, reinstate student loan payments, and cut non-defense discretionary spending. The bill also has an enforcement mechanism: If Congress fails to pass the required appropriations bills by January 1, overall discretionary spending will be cut by 1 percent.

Biden Claims Veterans Law Lets Him Forgive Billions in Student Debt. The Law’s Authors Say Otherwise.

President Joe Biden claimed last month that a law designed to help veterans empowers him to forgive hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt. But former members of Congress who helped pass that law say the president is overstepping his authority and attempting "to radically change the student loan system" by canceling the debt.

Stop Crying In Congress, It’s Pathetic

Former House Speaker John Boehner gets choked up during remarks at event honoring Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Former GOP House Speaker John Boehner became emotional while delivering remarks honoring Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) at a portrait unveiling ceremony on Wednesday.

Boehner, who served as speaker from early 2011 through late October 2015, became choked up when saying, in an apparent reference to his daughters, that his "girls" told him to tell Pelosi how much they admire her.

Boehner said that no other modern speaker has lead with the "authority" or "consistent results" as Pelosi, and he described the lawmaker as "one tough cookie."

Pelosi later said of Boehner that she would have been a bit "disappointed if he did not get emotional."

Pelosi is the first and only woman ever to serve as speaker of the House. While she was recently elected to another term in office, she has opted not to seek the leadership role again. She has served as a lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than three decades.

"John Boehner crying as he paid tribute to Nancy Pelosi is the perfect symbol of uniparty pathology," Monica Crowley tweeted.

"Boehner crying in tribute to Pelosi while talking about how his daughters are Democrats is a pretty good summation of Republican leadership over the past couple of decades," Ben Shapiro tweeted.

"While you’re sniveling at Pelosi’s portrait reveal, conservatives are weeping for America — precisely because our country’s greatness and potential have been squandered by The Uniparty..." Tim Meads wrote.

Guy Benson tweeted, "In fairness, Boehner cries about everything."

Republican Congressman Don Young from Alaska has died at 88 years old

U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) died Friday night.

Rep. Young was the longest-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Fox News reported that his death occurred while at the Los Angeles International Airport on his way home to Alaska.

Young was 88-years old and his cause of death has not yet been determined. Young had served in Congress since 1973 after winning a special election.

“It’s with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce Congressman Don Young, the Dean of the House and revered champion for Alaska, passed away today while traveling home to Alaska to be with the state and people that he loved,” a statement from Young’s office said.

“His beloved wife Ann was by his side,” it continued.

Young’s office confirmed that in the coming days they “will be sharing more details about plans for a celebration of his life and legacy.”

Jack Ferguson, a current lobbyist who previously served as Young’s chief of staff said that despite his age, Young was excited to be running for re-election.

He said, “He was vibrant, he had a lot of energy, he’s very clear of mind, spoke clearly about what he wanted to accomplish, set goals that he wanted to make happen, and was happy to be running.”

Young served as dean of the House. This means that he was the most senior member of either political party. He was also the last active member of the House who was elected in the 1970s.

Before entering Congress, Young worked in construction, fishing and trapping, and gold mining. He also captained a tugboat and delivered products along the Yukon River.

Shortly after being sworn into Congress, Young found himself holding a leading role in the historic battle for approval of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. His success in this endeavor is often heralded as one of the most important achievements of his career.

Young even said, “Next to statehood itself, the most historical legislation passed that affected every Alaskan then, now, and in the future, was the passage of the pipeline legislation.

Despite his well-documented good nature, the Congressman was also known for his larger-than-life antics including famously wielding a walrus’s pubic bone on the House floor during a debate over the rights of Alaskan Natives to sell the sex organs of endangered animals, defending the controversial industry of fur trapping while attaching a steel trap to his own leg, and holding a knife to the neck of former U.S. Rep and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio).
