GOP Rep. John Katko, one of the House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year, announces that he will not seek another term in Congress

GOP Rep. John Katko of New York, one of the ten House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching then-President Donald Trump last year in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, has announced that he will not seek another term in office.

According to The Hill, the congressman noted in a statement that he has chosen not to pursue reelection to the nation's legislature, "so that I can enjoy my family and life in a fuller and more present way."

"My conscience, principles, and commitment to do what's right have guided every decision I've made as a member of Congress, and they guide my decision today," he noted. "It is how I've been able to unite people to solve problems, and how I was rewarded with resounding victories in every single campaign for Congress."

Katko, who has served in Congress since 2015, was also numbered among the 13 House Republicans who voted in favor of the massive infrastructure bill last year.

Former President Trump issued a brief statement in which he cheered the news that Katko will not seek reelection.

"Great news, another one bites the dust. Katko, from Upstate New York, is gone!" Trump declared.
