Jake Tapper cannot hide his shock when he learns just how bad Kamala performed compared to Biden: 'Holy smokes'

CNN anchor Jake Tapper could not hide his astonishment when he learned that Vice President Kamala Harris badly underperformed compared to President Joe Biden four years ago.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning — after Donald Trump had already won Pennsylvania and sealed his path to victory — Tapper sought to better understand why Harris lost, asking CNN chief national correspondent John King if Harris was overperforming in any areas of the country compared to Biden in 2020.

Harris' dismal performance is raising an ironic question: Would Biden have been more competitive than Harris?

King then showed Tapper hard data showing that Harris was not outperforming Biden statewide in any state.

"Holy smokes!" Tapper reacted, according to a clip of their exchange. "Literally nothing?!"

"Literally nothing," King confirmed.

Next, King showed Tapper counties where Harris had overperformed by 3% or more compared to Biden in 2020. At the time, only 58 counties in the entire country could be included in that tally.

Harris' dismal performance is raising an ironic question: Would Biden have been more competitive than Harris?

For their part, Tapper and King believe he would not have been.

"I don't want to be disrespectful to the president of the United States," King began. "The vice president of the United States looks like she's about to lose the presidential election. She was campaigning vigorously from the second she got the nomination until the votes counted today. Is there any evidence on the table that the president of the United States could do half of what she did?"

"No," Tapper responded.

"A third of what she did?" King added.

"No," Tapper affirmed.

Trump's historic overperformance and a national red shift are two of the key reasons why he is headed back to the White House.

Trump, in fact, improved on his 2020 margins in more than 2,300 counties across America, while his margins decreased in fewer than 250, according to New York Times analysis.

WATCH: Compilation of mainstream media outlets admitting Vance destroyed Walz in the debate

“Every now and then, a debate is so clear ... who won and who lost that they can't really lie about it,” says Dave Rubin.

That was the case during Trump’s debate against Biden, which was the catalyst that kickstarted Biden’s dropping out, and it was certainly the case in the VP debate on Tuesday.

Even the mainstream networks couldn’t deny that Vance mopped the floor with Walz.

In a News Nation clip, Geraldo Rivera told Dan Abrams, “There is no doubt in my mind, however Governor Walz did in terms of sincerity that Vance won this debate.”

In another News Nation clip, Chris Cuomo said, “At one point, Vance wanted to correct something about how Haitians got into this country, and he was right, and the moderators wouldn't let him correct it.”

In a clip from CNN, John King told Jake Tapper, “The two issues driving the campaign right now are Harris has a big deficit on the economy; Harris has a big deficit on immigration. And Republicans were happy tonight and Democrats a little bit nervous that on those two issues, Vance carried it.” Tapper nodded in agreement.

In another CNN clip, Tapper said, “JD Vance is much more experienced at this — at public speaking, at defending himself, at pivoting.”

CNN’s Abby Phillip also told Dana Bash that she saw “a clear lack of preparation and execution” on the part of Tim Walz in the debate.

Bash disagreed and said, “I think actually it’s the opposite. I think he had too much preparation.”

As happy as Trump's supporters surely are, the event puts the nation in a highly precarious situation — what won't Democrats do now?

CNN reporter sends blunt warning to Biden for claiming economy is doing great: 'Voters don't like being told they're wrong'

CNN correspondent John King believes President Joe Biden should think twice before boasting about the economy.

In an interview with CNN anchor Erin Burnett, the president used rose-colored glasses to preach about the economy, claiming his economic policies have "already turned it around." Biden repeated his misleading claim about creating jobs and falsely said inflation was 9% when he came into office to claim that his policies have turned around inflation. The real problem, Biden claimed, is "corporate greed."

"Voters don't like being told they're wrong."

Those arguments and claims, King said, put Biden on "very dangerous ground" because, in his experience from the campaign trail, a lot of voters disagree with Biden.

"He is on very dangerous ground," King reacted. "I would say he risks offending — forgive my language — I would say he risks pissing off some of the voters I've talked to in my travels over the last six or seven months because they don't feel it."

King said he recently spoke with voters in Wisconsin and Michigan who are sour on the economy.

Those voters said they're facing a loss of jobs, the crushing weight of inflation, an unmanageable cost of living, and the inability to improve their lives — hardly anything good.

"Voters don't like being told they're wrong," King observed.

What is most interesting about King's observations is that polls and other interviews have corroborated them: Americans are generally sour on the economy because of inflation, high interest rates, and a rising cost of living that isn't slowing down.

And yet, King claimed: "The statistics back up the president's argument that the economy is much better and is growing and is the strongest in the world."

But do they?

First, inflation was not 9% when Biden entered office. The inflation rate when Biden entered office was 1.4%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It skyrocketed to 9.1% by June 2022 and remains above the Federal Reserve's targeted rate of 2%. In fact, inflation has increased every month of 2024 so far.

The rate aside, inflation has a compounding effect. So, despite inflation coming down from its highs two years ago, the purchasing power of each dollar in your pocket continues to diminish at an alarming rate.

Second, the GDP grew at just 1.6% in the first quarter, much lower than expectations. It's not exactly the signal of a booming economy.

Third, Biden has not created more than 10 million jobs, as he often likes to claim. Instead, the majority of jobs added to the economy under his presidency were people re-entering the workforce after the COVID pandemic lockdowns. And, while monthly jobs reports have looked good, those numbers are later revised, often to reflect that fewer jobs were added than first claimed.

Meanwhile, the number of Americans filing for unemployment reached the highest point in eight months last week, Reuters reported.
