Mardi Gras parade shooting: 4 injured, 1 dead

One person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting along the Bacchus parade route in New Orleans as attendees gathered to celebrate Mardi Gras Sunday night, multiple outlets reported.

"Everyone ran. Everyone took cover. My whole family ducked. I kind of just hovered over my family, like the small children," witness Andrew Crawford told 4WWL.

"This is a family event," another witness told the outlet. "There is no reason for anyone to bring a gun."

Another witness told 4WWL at least a dozen shots were fired and that "people were falling all over themselves trying to get out of the way."

The victims included a girl, a woman, and three males, all of whom were taken to local hospitals. One male victim later died, the outlet also reported.

The remaining victims are in stable condition, Fox 8 reported in an update Monday morning.

The incident occurred at the intersection of St. Charles Avenue and Terpsichore around 9:30 p.m. local time in front of the Hoshun Restaurant. The parade temporarily halted before moving out of the area.

News anchor Jonah Gilmore shared footage of the scene on Twitter.

"We made one apprehension. We found two guns on scene. They were able to make one apprehension," New Orleans Police Department Chief Deputy Hans Ganthier said in an on-scene press conference.

"There were five victims. ... One was a juvenile," Ganthier added.

"This is really not something we wanted to see. We really wanted to see a safe Mardi Gras, and we will continue to work toward that end."

Ganthier said that NOPD officers, Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, the Department of Corrections, and the state police were all on hand to assist.

As of Sunday night, New Orleans police said they could not be sure the individual they apprehended was the sole shooter. Officials encouraged the public to contact them with any information they may have about the incident. Witnesses or others with information about the crime can contact police directly at 504-658-6060 or anonymously via Crimestoppers at 1-877-903-7867.

Bacchus is among the biggest parades during carnival weekend. The Krewe of Bacchus, named for the Greek god of wine, was founded in 1968. The group has 1,600 riders and 32 floats.

MSNBC host is confronted with reality check after defending Joe Biden's history of lying to slam George Santos

MSNBC host Chris Hayes received a prompt reality check on Tuesday after downplaying Democrats who embellished their past to slam Republican Rep.-elect George Santos.

Santos, a Republican from Long Island, admitted this week to lying about his personal background, education, and employment history.

What did Hayes say?

On Tuesday, writer Jonah Goldberg critiized Democrats for conveniently forgetting how often their leaders have been caught embellishing their biographies.

"I think Santos is a total embarrassment and has no place in public life," Goldberg tweeted. "But a lot of folks on this site dinging him seem to have forgotten how much both the current president and his predecessor 'embellished' about their accomplishments."

In response, Hayes drew a distinction between Santos and President Joe Biden, ultimately minimizing Goldberg's point.

"I think there's a line between 'normal' politican [sic] bs-ing and conman serial lying, and he's got infractions on either side of that line," Hayes responded. "I mean it would have been a pretty big deal if it turned out Joe Biden didn't actually have a law degree!"

“@JonahDispatch I think there's a line between "normal" politican bs-ing and conman serial lying, and he's got infractions on either side of that line. I mean it would have been a pretty big deal if it turned out Joe Biden didn't actually have a law degree!”
— Jonah Goldberg (@Jonah Goldberg) 1672156606

What was the response?

Hayes' attempt to dismiss Goldberg's point was confronted with Biden's history of serial lying.

 • "Sure, Biden lied about being the first in his family to go to college, lied about his scholarship, lied about finishing in the top half of his class, lied about having 3 undergrad degrees, and lied about being a professor.but, by God, the law degree is real!" journalist T. Becket Adams explained.
 • "The thing is, Biden was busted for plagiarizing 5 entire pages in law school -- he probably shouldn't have a law degree," writer Mark Hemingway noted.
 • "What if it turned out he cheated his way to a law degree by plagiarizing five full pages from a published law review? How could anyone pretend a person could accidentally type five full pages verbatim from a published law review?" commentator Phil Kerpen pointed out.
 • "Biden lies about the most important moments in his life all the time. From the tragic death of his daughter and first wife to the number of grandchildren he has. He lies incessantly about his education. Find something biographical he doesn’t lie about. Hell, he’s not even Irish," another person said.
 • "Conman serial lying is literally who Joe Biden is. He says he played football in college, was in the military, his son died in Iraq, he got arrested meeting Nelson Mandela, got arrested for supporting desegregation (he actually argued *FOR* segregation) & says he beat up cornpop," one person explained.
 • "What @chrislhayes means to say is that there is a difference between a serial-lying conman on my political team and a serial-lying conman on the other political team," one person responded.
 • "And for you that line is party affiliation," another person said, referring to Hayes' "line" of distinction.
 • "So you’re ok with Biden lying, plagiarizing, and just flat out making things up for decades? Why did he have to drop outta the 1988 Prez race again?" one person asked.

Indeed, Biden's more notorious lies include his claim that he was arrested while trying to visit Nelson Mandela, claims about the tragic car accident that killed his wife and son in 1972, claims about his academic history and credentials. You can see more via PolitiFact here.

Most famously, Biden's falsehoods about his academic record forced him to end his 1988 presidential campaign.

David Hogg wants to know why you don't need a license to kill humans. No, really.

Gun control activist and Harvard whiz kid David Hagg took to Twitter to ask a very serious question about gun rights in this country, and he'd like to remind the court of public opinion that he's entitled to own special level of dumb.

“If you need a license to kill deer why don’t you need one to kill humans?” Hogg tweeted, adding “Plenty of people will think this is dumb- good for you. I’m not looking out for an election and I’m entitled to my own opinion no matter how much you disagree."

If you need a license to kill deer why don’t you need one to kill humans?

Well, ask and ye shall receive. Twitter was happy to offer David some friendly information and advice.

It's illegal to kill people.

Would rather keep murder illegal, but you're entitled to your opinion, Harvard McHitman
— Razor (@Razor) 1648933027
What if we made murder illegal? That could work.
— Rich (@Rich) 1648912868

The only time it is legal to kill someone, you have to get a lot more than a license, buddy. You have to get a final judgment from a jury that passes through dozens of appeals and then the person who does it still has to be licensed but otherwise sick burn on gun owners
— Leon Wolf 🇺🇦 (@Leon Wolf 🇺🇦) 1648917807
I'll type slowly so you can keep up. Because we don't give out licenses to kill humans. We charge people who intentionally kill humans -- save in self-defense -- with committing a crime (in some cases punishable by death). Maybe you've seen too many James Bond movies?https://twitter.com/davidhogg111/status/1510274623283281926 …

I bet this sounded way better in your head, lol.

A Harvard education, everyone.
— Buggward (@Buggward) 1648985394
Dear David - your thought is flawed. 1st deer are a food source like cows, chicken, pigs, etc. Your statement implies that by granting a license it would be perfectly fine to hunt fellow human beings. God Lord Son, seek professional help.
— Dr. Joe Tomaso (@Dr. Joe Tomaso) 1648988888
The last time I checked, unless it's in self-defense, killing humans was still illegal... has that changed?

Chris Wallace announces abrupt departure from Fox News effective immediately — and he's joining CNN (UPDATED)

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace announced Sunday that he is immediately leaving the network.

What are the details?

After working at Fox News for 18 years, Wallace announced his abrupt departure at the conclusion of "Fox News Sunday," the show he has anchored since 2003.

"After 18 years, this is my final 'Fox News Sunday.' It is the last time — and I say this with real sadness — we will meet like this," Wallace said.

"Eighteen years ago, the bosses here at Fox promised me they would never interfere with a guest I booked or a question I asked. And they kept that promise," Wallace continued. "I have been free to report to the best of my ability, to cover the stories I think are important, to hold our country’s leaders to account. It’s been a great ride."

"We’ve covered five presidential elections, interviewed every president since George H.W. Bush, travelled the world — sitting down with France’s Emanuel Macron and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. And I’ve gotten to spend Sunday mornings with you," Wallace said. "It may sound corny, but I feel we’ve built a community here. There’s a lot you can do on Sundays. The fact you’ve chosen to spend this hour with us is something I cherish."

— The Recount (@The Recount) 1639321805

Wallace did not provide many details about why he is leaving Fox News, other than saying he wants to shift his career "beyond politics."

"I want to try something new, to go beyond politics to all the things I’m interested in. I’m ready for a new adventure," Wallace said.

Before joining Fox News in 2003, Wallace worked at NBC News and ABC News. A source told Variety that Wallace could be headed to CNN.

What did Fox News say?

The network did not provide any additional details about the nature of Wallace's abrupt departure.

However, the network said that several anchors will host "Fox News Sunday" in the coming weeks until a permanent host is named.

"We are extremely proud of our journalism and the stellar team that Chris Wallace was a part of for 18 years," a statement from Fox News said. "The legacy of FOX News Sunday will continue with our star journalists, many of whom will rotate in the position until a permanent host is named."

Anything else?

Conservative writer Jonah Goldberg said he does not think it was Wallace's plan just one month ago to leave Fox News, suggesting something internal happened to prompt Wallace's abrupt departure.

Wow. Suffice it to say, I don’t think this was the plan a month ago.https://twitter.com/joshrogin/status/1470045795613356052 …
— Jonah Goldberg (@Jonah Goldberg) 1639321468

Goldberg himself left Fox News last month — after working as a Fox News contributor for more than a decade — in protest of host Tucker Carlson.
