AOC & NYC mayor DUKE it out over Jordan Neely's death
Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless New Yorker, was killed on Monday afternoon while riding the subway.
According to reports, Neely had been put in a chokehold by a 24-year-old Marine who decided to step in when Neely became erratic — but it is now the center of debate as to whether or not the Marine was justified.
Whether it was justified or not, activists have wasted no time taking to the streets to protest Neely’s passing — and politicians like AOC are rapidly throwing their two cents in.
The politician claimed in a tweet that Neely was “murdered,” though the situation is still being investigated.
“We might have the next George Floyd event on our hands,” said Sara Gonzales of "The News & Why It Matters."
However, Neely’s previous record has been anything but clean.
A spokesman for the NYPD told Newsweek that “Neely has a record that includes 42 prior arrests between 2013 and 2021, including an active warrant for an assault at the time of his death.”
Even Mayor Eric Adams is warning New Yorkers not to jump to conclusions.
In an interview on CNN, Adams said, “I don’t think that’s very responsible at the time where we’re still investigating the situation. Let’s let the DA conduct his investigation with the law enforcement officials. To really interfere with that is not the right thing to do, and I’m going to be responsible and allow them to do their job and allow them to determine exactly what happened here.”
While some are claiming Neely’s death was not justified, others disagree.
Jaco Booyens notes that the Marine was not alone in restraining Neely, as several other men stepped in to help.
“The Marine did what he was supposed to do,” he says, “No, I don’t want the guy to lose his life, right? But you got to take action — put your phone down and settle the situation — and that’s what they did, and it wasn’t alone.”
