New poll shows Tim Walz is failing to help Kamala Harris win Minnesota

While the media is busy painting Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as "folksy," the folks in Minnesota are not rushing to jump onboard the Democratic ticket.

That's according to a new poll showing that independents are breaking toward former President Donald Trump even though Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has a lead in the state.

'You wanna rip open the champagne bottle, pop that cork, do not do it.'

The MinnPost-Embold Research poll said that Harris' lead has shrunk from 5% to just over 4% in just two weeks in a pivotal state where Democrats have a 7% advantage in voting registrations.

Of those voters who identify themselves as independents, 40% said they would vote for Trump while only 23% said they would back Harris, a 2 to 1 advantage for the former president.

The New York Post noted that unless something changes to improve Harris' standing in the state, it may become a dark horse battleground state in November.

Some poll experts have pointed out that Trump has historically underperformed in polling, owing in part to the reticence of his supporters to take polls. Democratic strategist James Carville warned Democrats that unless Harris is winning by more than three points in the popular vote, Republicans still have a good chance of prevailing on election day.

CNN polling analyst Harry Enten agreed.

"The bottom line is this: If you have an idea, if you're a Kamala Harris fan and you wanna rip open the champagne bottle, pop that cork, do not do it. Donald Trump is very much in this race," he said in August.

"If we have a polling shift like we've seen in prior years from now until the final result, Donald Trump would actually win," Enten added.

CNN pollster warns Democrats against popping champagne over Harris polling: 'Donald Trump is very much in this race'

While many Democrats are celebrating a surge in support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, CNN's polling analyst Harry Enten warns them that former President Donald Trump is likely to gain support based on historical trends.

Enten made the case for the race tightening up on CNN Tuesday.

While Harris is ahead in three swing states — Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — Enten pointed out that polling underestimated Trump's favorability in those states by 9% on average in 2016 and by 5% in 2020.

"The bottom line is this: If you have an idea, if you're a Kamala Harris fan and you wanna rip open the champagne bottle, pop that cork, do not do it. Donald Trump is very much in this race. If we have a polling shift like we've seen in prior years from now until the final result, Donald Trump would actually win."

Enten then pointed to polling that showed enthusiasm for Biden's re-election campaign had actually dropped slightly after Harris seized the nomination, while enthusiasm for Trump had actually increased in the same period.

"The bottom line here is yes, there may be more enthusiasm for Kamala Harris, but the fact is we're not seeing that necessarily translate in the almost-certain-to-vote," he explained.

Finally, Enten argued that Trump is more popular generally at this point in the 2024 campaign than he was at the same point in 2020 and at the same point in 2016.

Enten posted video of the segment to his X account.

New poll finds a majority of Americans say Kamala Harris is unfit to become president

Vice President Kamala Harris (D) saw even worsening favorability in a new poll as the Biden administration continued to get battered over the debacle in Afghanistan.

A Rasmussen poll released on Thursday showed that a majority of Americans, 55%, said that Harris was "not qualified" or "not at all qualified" to assume the duties of the presidency.

Alternately, only 43% of those polled said that Harris was either "qualified" or "very qualified" to be president.

This is a 6 percentage point drop from the same poll conducted in April, where 49% of respondents said she was qualified.

The precipitous fall of support for Harris likely resulted from the humiliating collapse of Afghanistan as the Taliban took over the country from which the U.S. had once driven them.

Prior to the Afghanistan disaster, Harris saw her net favorability turn negative in July when more Americans said they saw her in an unfavorable light than those that said they saw her favorably. Only 45% approved while 47% disapproved for a rating of negative 2 points. Prior to that poll she had a net equal rating, with 46% approving and 46% disapproving.

A separate poll from July found that a majority of Americans, 55%, were pessimistic about the future of the country for the following 12 months. The same poll found that only 35% of Americans were similarly pessimistic in May.

The vice president has been criticized by some for being quiet during the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan after she was previously very vocal about her role in making the decisions that led to the debacle.

A scathing assessment in the Los Angeles Times argued that Harris had to "own" the embarrassing withdrawal in Afghanistan after trying to take credit for the decision to leave the country.

Harris had also been faulted for the massive failure of the Biden administration to curb the growing migrant population at the southern border after President Joe Biden appointed her to tackle the issue.
