Chiefs fans flee in terror after shooting erupts at Kansas City championship parade; 1 dead, at least 9 injured
The air of celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl championship turned to terror after gunshots rang out and at least nine people were injured and one was killed.
Two armed suspects were reportedly detained by law enforcement.
Videos on social media showed fans fleeing after they heard the gunshots around Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, where a large stage was set up for speeches made by team players.
Kansas City police officers said they were clearing people around the facility as first responders cared for the injured.
Officials said that one of the injured had non-life-threatening injuries, five were in serious condition, and three were in critical condition.
About one million people were expected to attend the parade, and 600 law enforcement officials were providing security.
One woman at the parade said she was in an elevator when she heard the gunshots. She said the people on the elevator shut the doors and prayed.
"There was yelling and we didn't know if it was safe to leave, so we tried to block the doors. We heard the elevator start to move so we opened the doors and ran out -- there were officers there," she told KMBC-TV. "I've never been so glad to see an officer in my life."
Another woman described the rush of fans.
"All of the sudden, people started crushing forward. Everybody started running. There was screaming," Dana Brady said. "We didn't know what was happening, but in this day and age when people run, you run."
Some of the Kansas City Chiefs players posted their sentiments on social media.

"We need people to exit the area as quickly and safely as possible and avoid the parking garage in order to facilitate treatment of shooting victims," read a statement from police. "Many of you have footage of many officers securing Union Station, they are working to provide for the safety of everyone inside Union Station and expedite care of those injured."
