A father of a student was arrested last week after threatening that blood would be shed if a Nashville school keeps teaching a book titled "PET," police said.

What are the details?

Jacob Majok, 48, arrived around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the STEM Preparatory Academy on Foster Avenue to pick up his daughter who had received detention for refusing to do an assignment related to "PET," Nashville police said.

"PET," according to a WSMV-TV video report, "tells the story of a non-verbal 15-year-old black trans girl who teams up with a creature to kill the monster in her town."

Majok was upset by the book's content and said if the school continued to teach "PET," he would return with other parents and blood would be shed, police said.

He also specifically threatened the teacher who had given his daughter the assignment, police said.

Detectives with the department's Specialized Investigations Division looked into things, police said, and Majok was taken into custody. WSMV said Majok was arrested Thursday night.

Police said Majok acknowledged he knew his statements would be viewed as threats and that he likely would go to jail.

Majok will be charged with making a threat of mass violence involving a school, police said.

How did the author react?

In reaction to the arrest, Akwaeke Emezi — the author of "PET" — posted a tweet Friday saying "PET" and another book Emezi wrote have been "banned and pulled from libraries, yet they haven’t really been part of the national conversation on banned books, and I haven’t tried to enter this matter because ... my books being banned isn’t a promo opportunity for me when the issue is so much bigger." Emezi added that "as a highly visible Black trans author, I happen to like peace and quiet and not being harassed by thousands of transphobes while ‘allies’ watch for entertainment. Again."

The "PET" author also declared, "But let’s be clear, the revolution is won on stories, and the control of which stories are allowed to live and breathe is no small game."
