Evolutionary biologist shuts down science magazine editor for using a bird to push far-left gender narrative

An evolutionary biologist shut down the editor of a prominent science magazine on Wednesday for trying to use birds to push far-left gender ideology.

Laura Helmuth, editor in chief of the prestigious Scientific American, cited the white-throated sparrow, a small bird found in North America, as evidence that biological sex is not a binary.

"White-throated sparrows have four chromosomally distinct sexes that pair up in fascinating ways," she wrote on Twitter.

"P.S. Nature is amazing," she added. "P.P.S. Sex is not binary."

“White-throated sparrows have four chromosomally distinct sexes that pair up in fascinating ways
P.S. Nature is amazing
P.P.S. Sex is not binary https://t.co/NJhQI6uC0q via @audubonsociety”
— Laura Helmuth (@Laura Helmuth) 1684360028

The obvious problem with Helmuth's argument is that she constructed a non sequitur. Even if it is true that white-throated sparrows have four sex chromosomes, it does not discount the observable truth in nature that biological sex is, generally, binary, and that biological sex in humans is binary in the same way that humans are bipedal, though rarely some humans are born with one leg.

Aside from the fallacious argument, evolutionary biologist Dr. Colin Wright explained that Helmuth is just plain wrong.

In fact, Wright debunked this argument just two months ago. Interacting with other interlocutors who have advanced it, he explained:

The example they give of a species “with more than two sexes” is the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis). This species has two color morphs, males and females with either white or tan stripes. The more aggressive white stripe morph has a large inversion on chromosome 2, and the species mates disassortatively by color morph, meaning that white stripe morphs tend to mate with tan striped morphs. This chromosome inversion coupled with the disassortative mating by morph has led to a situation where chromosome 2 “behaves like” another sex chromosome.

But having more than two sex chromosomes is not the same as having more than two sexes. While this species may be an interesting case study for how sex chromosomes have evolved, it certainly isn’t an example of a species with “four sexes,” which would require four distinct gamete types.

Not only that, but Wright exposed how the very source to which Helmuth linked also does not say what she claimed. That article, after explaining the genetic peculiarities of the bird, declares, "It's almost as if the White-throated Sparrow has four sexes."

Wright mocked, "'Almost as if' means that it's not even 'as if,' meaning that they in fact do not have four sexes, but rather just two."

Campus security crumbles when leftist militants block entry to pro-woman movie in UK: 'No safe way we can get into the building'

Campus security crumbled in the face of leftist militants who blocked entrances to a building at Edinburgh University in Scotland where a pro-woman documentary was set to be shown Wednesday evening.

In the end, the screening was canceled in the face of the protest, the Guardian reported.

What are the details?

The outlet said this week's screening of "Adult Human Female" was organized with the university’s support after protesters in December confronted audience members and occupied a screening room, forcing a shutdown just minutes before the documentary was set to start.

Critics accuse "Adult Human Female" of transphobia by denying that transgender women have equality with biological women, the Guardian said.

Several hours before the scheduled screening Wednesday at the Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre, masked protesters blocked the building's doorways, the outlet reported.

“How do you counter hatred. With a conga to Born This Way of course”
— Mx Mike (They/Them) (@Mx Mike (They/Them)) 1682531187

University security staff refused to take action due to risks of physical confrontations with the protesters and decided to cancel the screening, the Guardian said.

STVNews political reporter Laura Alderman posted the university's message to the turned-away documentary attendees:

“A message sent to attendees of the film from the University ⬇️”
— Laura Alderman (@Laura Alderman) 1682528434

"Protestors are currently blockading all entrances to the venue," the statement read. "The University Security team have advised that there is no safe way we can get into the building, and the University have therefore advised that the screening cannot go ahead this evening."

The Guardian said there was a minor scuffle outside the theater when security held back two audience members who tried to push through to the entrance:

“One woman attempting to enter the lecture theatre is blocked by demonstrators. She tells them, "My rights are being denied by you. I want in there."”
— Laura Alderman (@Laura Alderman) 1682528434

If you thought the security response was lame...

The Guardian said the university offered a statement, saying it's “fully committed to upholding freedom of expression and academic freedom, and facilitating an environment where students and staff can discuss and debate challenging topics. We are disappointed that again this event has not been able to go ahead. In line with our commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and safe environment for our whole community, we worked with the organizers and put measures in place to mitigate risks associated with the event. However, with protesters restricting access to the venue, safety concerns were raised should the event proceed. It was therefore decided that the screening should not continue.”

More from the outlet:

Directly opposite the theater entrance, around 100 trans-rights activists, academics and students, standing behind a crowd barrier, took part in a sing-along organized by the trans rights group Cabaret Against the Hate Speech.

A Cabaret Against the Hate Speech spokesperson said they did not want the screening cancelled, but were implacably opposed to its positions. “Our goal was always to challenge it and make sure it was never going to be allowed to go unchallenged in society, because hate crime, transphobia and bigotry should never go unchallenged,” they said.

UN faces pushback against assertion that 'words can be weapons'

The United Nations caught flak on social media for claiming that "words can be weapons."

"Words can be weapons. Hate speech online can lead to cruelty & violence in real life. Get tips for how you can say #NoToHate," the U.N. tweeted, linking to a page on its website that discusses the topic of so-called "hate speech."

"I wish we'd defund you," conservative radio host Dana Loesch tweeted in response to the U.N.'s post.

"No they can't. Just stop. You have member nations engaged in slavery & mass murder. How about you get some priorities?" PJ Media columnist Stacey Lennox tweeted.

"No they are not. The UN is useless, corrupt, hypocritical and should be disbanded and forcibly removed from United States soil," someone else tweeted.

"I can't think of a more dangerous message than this one. There is a concerted effort to make the public fear free speech. This is authoritarianism," another person commented.

“I can’t think of a more dangerous message than this one. There is a concerted effort to make the public fear free speech. This is authoritarianism.”
— Laura Powell (@Laura Powell) 1669619595

The U.N.'s tweet linked to a webpage with suggestions about how people should react when they encounter "hate speech."

"Hate speech occurs in all societies, whether offline or online. It can sometimes be hard to assess when a comment is meant as hate speech – especially when expressed in the virtual world. It can also feel overwhelming to try to deal with obviously hateful content," the page states. "However, there are many ways you can take a stand, even if you are not personally the victim of hate speech. And you can make a difference."

"To detect false and biased information, including hate speech propaganda, be sure to check the content's origin with the help of search engines, fact-checking tools and other reliable sources," the U.N. suggested.

"One way to tackle hate speech is to spread your own counter-speech to make sure hate is not the dominant narrative. You can undermine hateful content with positive messages that spread tolerance, equality and truth in defense of those being targeted by hate," the page states. "Taking a public stand for, and extending solidarity to, people who are the targets of hate speech demonstrates that rejecting hate is the responsibility of every individual."

Video shows BRAINWASHED mask crusader threaten, assault Costco worker for not wearing mask

As local health departments and the CDC revise COVID safety guidelines, several of the nation’s largest retailers have relaxed mask policies for customers and employees. But the decision to release the masses from COVID mask captivity isn't sitting well with everyone.

A video circulating on social media shows a man wearing a vented mask wielding a canister of pepper spray inside a Costco. In the video, the masked man stands pointing pepper spray just inches away from an employee's face. Then without warning, he lunges forward to shove the employee, then jumps back and shouts, "Stay away! You're threatening my life!"

At this point, a second employee, presumably a manager, intervenes. The unhinged masker now points the pepper spray at the second employee and also tells him to "stay away."

When the second employee complies and takes a step back, the masker says, "Thank you. Now tell that to this a**hole" and gestures to the first employee.

"You can't be threatening people in here with pepper spray, okay? Do you understand that? You cannot threaten people in here with pepper spray," the employee says calmly.

"I can! You're not a cop. You're not a lawyer," insists the masker, before stalking away.

NPR reporter knocks her own newsroom for calling Hunter Biden laptop story a waste of time: 'It's always been is a story'

An NPR reporter disparaged her own newsroom for dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story. It wasn't the first time the reporter called out her employer for labeling Hunter Biden's emails a "waste" of time.

Weeks before the 2020 presidential election, the New York Post published bombshell reports about a laptop abandoned by Joe Biden's son. On the laptop, there were reportedly emails that indicated that Joe Biden – while vice president – met with a top executive at Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma – where Hunter was on the energy company's board. There were also allegedly emails from Hunter Biden pursuing "lasting and lucrative" deals with Chinese energy company China Energy Fund Committee (CEFC) that he said would be "interesting for me and my family."

A little more than a week after the alleged "smoking gun" emails surfaced, NPR announced that the news organization would not "waste" time covering the accusations because it was a "politically driven event."

NPR investigative correspondent Laura Sullivan broke rank with her employer by challenging NPR's decision not to have any journalistic curiosity about the report from the nation's oldest continuously published daily newspaper.

"Really love it when managers make our jobsharder. I don't know if that's #HunterBiden 's laptop or what's on it, but it's certainly not a 'waste of time' to find out," Sullivan wrote on Twitter in October 2020. "@NPR managers better hope that laptop was built out of an old Russian blender in Ukraine."

Sullivan knocked her own newsroom again this week for purposely avoiding the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald called out legacy media for intentionally ignoring the Hunter Biden email story.

"Most of the national corporate media lied in unison to the country for weeks right before the 2020 election by telling them that completely authentic emails about Joe Biden's dealings in Ukraine and China were 'Russian disinformation,' a lie they got from the CIA," Greenwald tweeted out on Wednesday. "Twitter founder Jack Dorsey apologized and admitted it was wrong for Twitter to have censored any mention of the story. The WPost this week called for a media 'reckoning' over what they did. Beyond those 2, they all let their lie stand to this day."

Sullivan responded to Greenwald by confronting her own newsroom's decision to completely ignore the Hunter Biden laptop story.

"Add @NPR to the list. Newsroom editors called it 'not a real story.' The 'Hunter Biden laptop' investigation may end up being a tax case, a hill of beans, or something else. But what it's always been is a story," Sullivan proclaimed.

The New York Times and the Washington Post waited 18 months after the story broke to finally confirm that Hunter's laptop and emails were authentic and not a Russian disinformation campaign – which both outlets previously suggested.

Earlier this month, liberal talk show Bill Maher host accused left-wing media outlets of burying the Hunter Biden email story.

"It looks like the left-wing media just buried the story because it wasn't part of their narrative and that's why people don't trust the media," Maher said of the story that was dismissed in the weeks leading up to the 2020 presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

WATCH: Christians tear down fences around shuttered Canadian church, government sends in 200 riot police

Hundreds of Canadian Christians gathered on Sunday at the GraceLife Church in Edmonton, Alberta. Government officials shut down the church for allegedly violating public COVID-19 health orders. Authorities erected a chain-link fence to prevent the house of worship from reopening last week. On Sunday, worshippers tore down the barricade, but were quickly met by a large contingent of riot police.

Alberta Health Services physically closed the GraceLife Church, preventing access to the building. AHS said the church would remain closed until the GraceLife Church "can demonstrate the ability to comply with Alberta's chief medical officer of health's restrictions." The Royal Canadian Mounted Police even closed off the access roads in front of the church to the public.

The AHS claimed it had received 105 complaints from the public about the GraceLife Church between July 10 and April 6. The church was shut down in January for breaching public health guidelines that limit worship services to 15% of capacity. The church was also accused of not ensuring that people wore face masks during religious services and for not practicing proper physical distancing.

In February, GraceLife's Pastor James Coates was charged violating COVID-19 public health orders. Coates spent 35 days in custody before pleading guilty to a charge of breaching bail and was fined $1,500. He returned to the pulpit on March 28.

Coates' attorney, John Carpay, said the government's enforcement was excessive.

"I'm very disappointed to see this kind of draconian and aggressive enforcement of health orders when these health orders themselves are being challenged in court," Carpay told CBC News. "It shows a very aggressive government that is not answering questions about its policies, but wants to push its weight around and try and make an example out of GraceLife Church."

Alaska GOP vows all 'legally permissible' action to prevent Sen. Lisa Murkowski's re-election

The Alaska Republican Party has censured Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) for voting to convict former President Donald Trump in his second Senate trial in January.

Of the seven Republican senators who voted "guilty," many have faced censure from their state parties. But the Alaska GOP went further. Not only did the state party members censure Murkowski, but they vowed to actively campaign against her in 2022.

What are the details?

The Alaska GOP passed a censure resolution during a meeting in Anchorage over the weekend.

In a 53-17 vote, the Alaska GOP censured Murkowski not only for supporting Trump's second impeachment, but also for several past votes that have angered Republicans, the Associated Press reported. Also cited was Murkowski having "consistently opposed placing limits on abortion" and the fact that she supported Deb Haaland's nomination to become interior secretary

"The party does not want Lisa Murkowski to be a Republican candidate," Tuckerman Babcock, former chairman of the Alaska GOP, told the AP.

Babcock explained the censure resolution directed Alaska Republicans to do everything in their power to ensure Murkowski is not re-elected.

"It went further than censure, which was strong," Babcock said. "But it also directed the party officials to recruit an opponent in the election and to the extent legally permissible, prevent Lisa Murkowski from running as a Republican in any election."

The resolution states:

Resolved that under Alaska Republican Party Rules, Article 1, Section 4 (f) 4, the Party hereby willrecruit a Republican primary challenger to oppose and prohibit Senator Murkowski from being acandidate in any Republican primary to the extent legally permissible.

"The committee decided that they need to speak up early in order to encourage a candidate to come forward," Babcock added.

Trump has declared that he will campaign against Murkowski.

Why did Murkowski vote to convict?

After voting "guilty," Murkowski released a lengthy statement explaining that she believed Trump was guilty of inciting the deadly violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Later, when faced with the prospect of censure, Murkowski reiterated that her loyalty is to the U.S. Constitution — not Trump.

"They can make that statement. But I will make the statement, again, that my obligation is to support the Constitution that I have pledged to uphold, and I will do that, even if it means that I have to oppose the direction of my state party," Murkowski said last month.

Who might replace Murkowski?

Murkowski is up for re-election in 2022, but it's not yet clear if she will pursue another Senate term. However, several names have emerged as possible candidates for her seat.

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor, teased challenging Murkowski after she voted against Brett Kavanaugh in a procedural vote during Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation.

"Hey @LisaMurkowski — I can see 2022 from my house..." Palin tweeted in 2018.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R) is also a potential challenger.

Surprisingly, Fox News host Laura Ingraham even voiced interest in running for Murkowski's seat after the senator's vote against Kavanaugh in 2018.

"I like Alaska...a lot. Maybe it's time to run for Senate after all. @lisamurkowski has abandoned all principles of due process and fairness. Disgraceful," Ingraham said at the time. "Embarrassing to Alaska and to any who believe in due process and the presumption of innocence."

Twitter troll tricks Democrats into being outraged over Maxine Waters' 'dangerous' quote against Trump administration

Democrats are completely outraged over a fake quote from Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters. A Twitter troll replaced Waters' original tweet that targeted Trump administration staffers with Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Democrats took the bait and called Waters' words "dangerous" and many said it was "inciting violence."

In June 2018, Waters delivered a fiery speech where she called for members of the "Resistance" to harass staffers of the Trump administration.

"History will record while he tried to step on all of us, we kicked him in his rear and step on him," Waters bellowed. "If you think we're rallying now, you ain't seen nothin' yet!"

"Already, you have members of your Cabinet that are being booed out of restaurants...who have protesters taking up at their house, who say, 'No peace, no sleep! No peace, no sleep!" Waters said, referencing Trump's former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen being intimidated by socialists at a Mexican restaurant.

"God is on our side," Waters proclaimed. "Let's stay the course!"

"Let's make sure we show up wherever we have to show up and if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere," she yelled to rile the crowd into a frenzy.

Waters then zeroed in on then-President Donald Trump, "Mr. President, we will see you every day, every hour of the day, everywhere that we are to let you know you cannot get away with this!"

Twitter user @CuomoWatch took a portion of the congresswoman's speech, but altered it slightly to target the Cuomo administration instead of Trump's Cabinet.

"If you see anybody from the Cuomo Administration in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere," the now-viral tweet said.

Democrats, who are obviously not familiar with Waters' tempestuous tirade, immediately condemned the threatening words, likely assuming the menacing comments were made by Republicans or Trump supporters.

New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) fell for the fake quote, "This is encouraging violence against public officials - plain & simple. Absolutely disgusting. No tolerance for this. Haven't we learned the lessons from Washington D.C. just weeks ago?"

Former Pete Buttigieg adviser Lis Smith wrote, "Way way way over the line. Especially in light of what happened at the Capitol on Jan 6."

Democratic New York City Councilwoman Debi Rose reacted by saying, "Really? Did we not learn anything from the Capitol insurrection? We must condemn violence and harassment in any form. #StopTheViolence #MobMentality."

Democratic City Council Member Keith Powers said, "There are plenty of strong opinions and online angst these days, but there is no place for inciting violence or threatening people. This tweet should be removed ASAP. Full stop."

Democratic Senator for the 36th District of the New York Senate Jamaal T. Bailey tweeted, "This is more than tonedeaf, especially considering what's happened in recent days. This is unacceptable and ridiculous. Read the room."

Democratic member of the New York State Assembly Daniel Rosenthal said, "This is dangerous and unacceptable, especially after what happened in DC. Encouraging this kind of violence is unacceptable."

Democratic County Executive of Suffolk County Steve Bellone declared, "Democrats and Republicans must denounce this threat of violence against our fellow New Yorkers. After the Capitol riots, I call on @Twitter to ban this account immediately."

Former Democratic Speaker of the New York City Council Christine Quinn exclaimed, "This is dangerous and outrageous!"

Democratic County Executive of Nassau County Laura Curran was also fooled by the fake quote, "No matter your political party or beliefs, this is completely unacceptable. Nassau County has zero tolerance for hatred and inciting violence."

Democratic Speaker of the New York State Assembly Carl E. Heastie wrote, "This is appalling and dangerous. Encouraging violence must never be tolerated. Shame on whoever is behind this kind of garbage."

Democratic Assembly Member for the 42nd District of the New York State Assembly Rodneyse Bichotte was duped, "Threatening government officials & their staff is a crime for which there is a ZERO tolerance policy in Brooklyn & anywhere else. I condemn this tweet & the violence it incites, especially following the insurrection we just experienced at the capitol."

Democratic Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan wrote on Twitter, "This kind of dangerous rhetoric must be called out and condemned by all. Or else we risk repeating the horrendous events of Jan 6th. As leaders, especially in a time of such great challenge, it's incumbent on all of us to appeal to the 'better angels of our nature."

Democratic member of the New York State Senate Todd Kaminsky said, "Completely unacceptable. Haven't we learned the hard lesson that incitements to violence like this actually result in violence? There is no room for this in our discourse. None."

Luis A. Miranda, Jr. said, "You don't like the Governor, you vote him out. After the terrorist attack on our Capitol, threats, of any kind, especially as the right is targeting state capitals, are dangerous. And to target staff? Not cool."

Democratic Speaker of the New York City Council Corey Johnson stated, "The terrifying events of the last month have shown us more clearly than ever that words have consequences. This sort of targeting and incitement is simply wrong, and totally unacceptable."

Democrats finally condemn Maxine Waters' dangerous rhetoric, two years later, and only after they thought it was a Republican saying it.
