Mayor Adams says NYC must 'modify sanctuary city law' to facilitate deportation of law-breaking migrants

During a Monday evening town hall meeting, Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams called for changes to the city's "sanctuary" policy that would allow local law enforcement to turn over some law-breaking migrants to federal agents, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported.

Adams has previously expressed support for the city's sanctuary status. However, New York City's overwhelmed shelter system and increase in crime may be pushing the mayor to reconsider the policy.

A video of the town hall meeting posted on social media by independent photographer Leeroy Johnson captured Adams' remarks, where he appeared to walk back his stance on the city's sanctuary status policies.

"The overwhelming number of migrants and asylum-seekers that are here, they want to work. I still don't understand why the federal government is not allowing them to work. They need to have the right to work, like all of us that have come to this country have had the ability to do so," Adams stated.

"But those small numbers that have committed crimes, we need to modify the sanctuary city law that if you commit a felony or violent act, we should be able to turn you over to [United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and have you deported," Adams added.

The room erupted in applause in response to the mayor's comments.

In a separate video, Adams explained that the current laws are preventing him from curbing the illegal migrant crisis within the city.

"People tell me all the time, they see me on the street and they say, 'Well, Eric, why don't you stop the buses from coming in?' It's against the law, I can't. 'Why don't you allow those who want to work — allow them to work?' It's against the law — the federal law — I can't. 'Why do you say you have to house everyone that [comes] in?' Because that's the law. 'Why don't you deport those who commit crimes and harm people that are not doing the right thing?' It's against the law, I can't," Adams said.

Despite "inheriting a national crisis," Adams argued that New York City has handled the influx of migrants better than other cities across the country.

"You don't see tent cities in New York. You don't see children and families sleeping on the street in New York. This team here has managed the crisis each time they come," he added.

During the town hall meeting, New York Police Department Chief of Patrol John Chell noted that the city's law enforcement officials have seized 50,000 illegal scooters, bikes, and cars off of the streets. According to Chell, residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the stolen and illegal vehicles being used by migrants to commit crimes.

Earlier this month, minority Republicans in the New York state legislature proposed legislation that would effectively reverse the city's sanctuary policies, Blaze News previously reported. The bill, if passed, would allow local law enforcement agencies to coordinate with ICE.

Kenneth Genalo, the director of ICE's New York field office, has blamed the city's sanctuary policies for hindering the agency's ability to remove illegal migrants.

"We want to help. The problem is, due to city policies and state law, cooperation is no longer afforded between NYPD and ICE," Genalo told the New York Post.

"Once they're back in the community, we have to then go look for them," he added. "Instead of being able to take custody of these individuals in the confines of a jail or in the confines of a precinct, we now have to go out into the community and the streets where unfortunately the criminals have the upper hand."

Staten Island protesters block bus of migrants headed to former senior living home, leading to 10 arrests

Late Tuesday evening, a large group of protesters in the New York City borough of Staten Island blocked a bus carrying migrants headed to a former senior living facility. The residents' demonstration ultimately led to an altercation with local law enforcement, and 10 protesters were taken into custody.

According to WCBS-TV, the protesters blocked traffic at Father Capodanno Boulevard and Midland Avenue in Midland Beach. Several police units responded to the scene.

Residents voiced their frustrations with the worsening migrant crisis and protested the city's plan to move them into the former Island Shores Beach building, which was once a senior living facility with 288 beds.

Video taken of the protesters captured frustrated Staten Island residents shouting, "You're not welcome" and "You are illegal!" the New York Post reported.

Residents have been protesting near the building for weeks after rumors circulated that it would be turned into a shelter for migrants arriving in New York City.

Local law enforcement reported that 10 protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct, including a 48-year-old man who was charged with allegedly assaulting an officer. Residents insisted that officers were aggressive and suppressing their right to protest, WABC reported.

Police stated that no altercations involving migrants or bus personnel were reported.

Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, told the outlet, "As I told them, they don't have enough handcuffs, they don't have enough cops, they don't have enough cars. We're going to be out here 24/7, 365, and the illegals are not going to want to come here. They should stay in Manhattan."

On Wednesday morning, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams called the protest an "ugly display."

"We have 8.3 million New Yorkers and we cannot allow the numerical minority that shows an ugly display of how we deal with crisis be used as an example of what New Yorkers are doing. Of course, New Yorkers are frustrated, New Yorkers are really concerned," Adams stated.

"And even the migrants are really concerned," he continued. "We are both stating that this crisis should be dealt with in a manner where the national government carries out the role that it is supposed to. It should not be left on the backs of New York City residents."

Two municipal government sources told the New York Daily News Tuesday that the city is planning to limit shelter stays. Currently, single adult migrants are allowed to reside in city-operated shelters for 60 consecutive days. After that period, migrants who cannot find "alternative housing" must reapply for a new city shelter bed to restart the 60-day time limit. Sources claimed that New York City plans to limit stays to 30 days for single adult migrants. There is currently no shelter stay limit on families with children; however, the city is reportedly considering placing a time restriction in the near future.

Black Lives Matter stage vaccine mandate protest at NYC's Barclays Center to demand unvaccinated Kyrie Irving be able to play NBA games

Hundreds of demonstrators staged a protest against vaccine mandates on Sunday at the Barclays Center in New York City. The protesters – which included Black Lives Matter supporters – demanded that the Brooklyn Nets allow superstar Kyrie Irving to be able to play in NBA games despite being unvaccinated.

Demonstrators called for an end to New York City's vaccine mandate, and carried signs that read: "End medical mandates" and "No digital passports." There were also protesters supporting the Nets basketball player with "Stand with Kyrie" signs.

The crowd of protesters was extremely diverse, with conservatives with American, Gadsden, and "F*** Biden" flags, along with Black Lives Matter supporters, and a woman with a "Vegan unvaxxed" sign.

The protesters marched to the Barclays Center – where the Nets played on Sunday without Irving and lost at home to the visiting Charlotte Hornets.

Earlier this month, the Brooklyn Nets banned Irving from playing in all games and participating in practices because he is unvaccinated against COVID-19. New York City's draconian health guideline requires everyone to be vaccinated to enter indoor gyms. Kyrie was still eligible to play in away games, but the Nets barred him from all games.

The NBA ruled that unvaccinated players banned from playing games must forfeit their salary. If Irving misses the season because he doesn't get vaccinated against COVID-19, the seven-time All-Star and NBA champion stands to lose his entire $35 million salary this season.

Members of the Black Lives Matter of Greater New York organization participated in the protest against the vaccine mandate. Hawk Newsome – the co-founder and chairman of the group – led protesters in chants of "My body, my choice" and "Let Kyrie play!"

Some of the protesters knocked down barricades and attempt to storm the Barclays Center but were turned away by security.

The clash between protesters and security caused the Barclays Center to temporarily shutter its doors about an hour before Sunday's Nets game.

"Barclays Center briefly closed its doors today in order to clear protestors from the main doors on the plaza and ensure guests could safely enter the arena. Only ticketed guests were able to enter the building and the game proceeded according to schedule," Mandy Gutmann, a Barclays Center spokesperson, told CNN in a statement.

The New York Police Department's press office said no arrests were made.

Last month at a BLM protest in New York City against vaccine mandates, Newsome declared, "We are not anti-vaxxers. Some of us are vaccinated. It's an individual's choice. No one should be forced to put something in their body."

Chivona Newsome – a fellow co-founder of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York – threatened an "uprising" to the likes seen across the country following the George Floyd murder over vaccine mandates that she proclaimed to be "racist."
