JD Vance wipes the smirk off Tim Ryan's face when he corrects this lie during Ohio Senate debate
Ohio's U.S. Senate candidates, Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan and Republican candidate J.D. Vance, faced off during their first debate of the general election on Monday.
When asked about their views on abortion, Vance, who is fundamentally pro-life, said he would support "some minimum national standard" to limit elective mid- to late-term abortions.
"We’re talking about 5-month-old [gestational age] babies, fully formed babies, who can feel pain. No civilized country in the world allows elective abortion that late in pregnancy. I don’t think the United States should be an exception," he said.
Vance went on to specify that he does believe in “reasonable exceptions” to abortion laws, citing the highly publicized case of the 10-year-old rape victim who had to travel out of Ohio to get an abortion. He then turned the tables on Ryan, noting that the child's alleged rapist was in the country illegally.
"I have said repeatedly on the record that I think that that girl should be able to get an abortion if she and her family so choose," Vance said. "But let's talk about that case, because why was a 10-year-old girl raped in our community, raped in our state in the first place? The media and Congressman Ryan, they talk about this all the time. The thing they never mention is that that poor girl was raped by an illegal alien, somebody that should have never been in this state in the first place. You voted so many times against border wall funding, so many times for amnesty. Tim, if you had done your job, she would have never been raped in the first place. Do your job on border security. Don't lecture me about opinions I don't actually have," he added.
On "The Rubin Report," BlazeTV host Dave Rubin shared a clip of the fiery exchange and noted how it's the Republicans who are now more moderate on abortion, as most support some exceptions and are willing to compromise even though they are basically pro-life, while Democrats such as Tim Ryan want no limits on abortion at all.
"J.D.'s position is that he allows for exceptions, okay, in the case of rape and health of the mother, etc. So that's somewhat of a moderate position, okay?" Dave said. "By the way, Florida ... which is thought of as this very red state with a very mean guy named Ron DeSantis in charge, has a 15-week ban on abortion, which is basically three and a half months into a pregnancy. And nobody's arguing about abortion here in Florida ... because that's a compromise," he added.
"Let's compare and contrast that with Tim Ryan's position on abortion," Dave said to introduce a clip of Ryan telling Fox News' Bret Baier he doesn't believe in "any limits to abortion at any time."
"Okay, so you tell me, guys, which is the moderate position?" Dave asked.
