High-tech hero: Video shows police bomb squad robot outsmart, pin down hotel gunman in Texas showdown

There's a new RoboCop in town. A police bomb squad robot singlehandedly incapacitated and pinned down an armed suspect in a Texas showdown.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said there was a warrant out for the arrest of 39-year-old Felix Delarosa because he violated his parole by tampering with his electronic monitoring device, KCBD reported.

The robot approached the broken window, and the suspect shot his gun at the robot. The bomb squad robot countered by spraying tear gas into the room.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, Texas Anti-Gang unit members tracked down Delarosa at a Days Inn hotel in Lubbock. Delarosa — who was armed at the time — reportedly fired a shot at officers from inside his room when they went to approach him.

The officers called the Lubbock County Sheriff’s SWAT team to assist with apprehending the suspect.

Officials said Delarosa fired another shot while SWAT negotiators attempted to convince him to peacefully surrender. During the negotiations, Delarosa — who was barricaded in his hotel room — allegedly fired more shots at officers.

A sheriff’s office sniper returned fire and allegedly struck Delarosa.

By this time in the standoff, the room's large glass window had been shattered amid the exchange of gunfire.

Robot to the rescue

The Lubbock Regional Bomb Squad deployed a robot to deal with the suspect without putting the lives of law enforcement in jeopardy. The bomb squad robot rolled up to Delarosa's hotel room. The suspect first attempted to debilitate the robot by throwing a bed sheet on it, which was not effective.

The robot approached the broken window, and the suspect shot his gun at the robot. The bomb squad robot countered by spraying tear gas into the room.

The suspect is seen on video desperately crawling out of the room and appears to be extremely disoriented from the tear gas.

While Delarosa was wriggling on the ground, the robot drove on top of him.

Then, while pinning him to the ground, the wheels of the robot pulled down the suspect's pants.

SWAT team members swooped in to take Delarosa into custody two hours after the showdown began.

Delarosa was transported to University Medical Center for his injuries and then booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center.

Delarosa was charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice noted that Delarosa was sentenced to 20 years in prison for manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance in 2017.

Delarosa was released from prison and placed on parole in April 2022.

'Jeffrey Dahmer Special' display at Texas pizza joint sparks controversy

'Jeffrey Dahmer Special' display at Texas pizza joint sparks controversy

A Halloween display at one Lubbock, Texas, pizzeria has some people screaming — but not for the reasons the management had hoped.

Capital Pizza — which, according to its website, offers "hot, unique, & satisfying pies & sandwiches" — created a counter display entitled the "Jeffrey Dahmer Special," a gruesome-looking faux pie with toppings resembling eyeballs, fingers, intestines, and blood.

Jeffrey Dahmer was a notorious serial killer who dismembered and then consumed many of the bodies of his victims. Between 1978 and 1991, Dahmer murdered 17 men and underage boys, many of whom were black. He was convicted in 1992 and sentenced to life in prison. He was murdered by a fellow inmate in November 1994.

A recent Netflix series brought the story of Dahmer's heinous crimes back into the news. Between the Netflix series and the upcoming spooky holiday, one Capital Pizza server thought that a Dahmer-themed decoration might put people in the Halloween spirit. The "Jeffrey Dahmer Special" was then created for display purposes only. It is not a menu item and is not available for purchase.

Many customers have really enjoyed the display. According to an unnamed manager, people have come into the store just to see it in person. Some kids even want to have their picture taken with it.

Despite the enthusiasm expressed by some, the display has likewise left some customers and many social media users feeling sick to their stomachs.

"This is horrible! I am so tired of all of the 'celebration' over Dahmer," wrote one Facebook user. "I remember when all of that went down. I didn’t like it then and I am definitely not going to watch the Netflix series about him. Why would anyone want to put that in their minds? It is horrible that the families of Dahmer’s victims, have to have their bandages ripped off just so they can be reminded of what happened to their loved ones."

"Disgusting! People's minds are warped and twisted. Pray for them," another user commented on TMZ's Facebook page.

The store manager claimed that the display has been up for about three weeks. The restaurant intends to take it down after Halloween is over.

ACLU already files suit against Texas 'sanctuary city for the unborn'

Lubbock, Texas became a "sanctuary city for the unborn" on Saturday following a 62-percent majority vote that will completely outlaw abortion.

Chad Prather shared details about story on Tuesday's podcast. Lubbock was added to a list of 24-cities in the State of Texas where abortion is completely illegal. Lubbock, however, took the measure a step further. The measure will not only outlaw abortion, it will also allow a family member to sue the physician who performed the abortion. Also , a family member will have a legal pathway to sue anyone who assisted and any individual who assisted the person in getting an abortion.

CBS reported that, "The measure is aimed at outlawing abortion in the West Texas city, a move likely to prompt legal action from opponents who call it an unconstitutional ban on the procedure."

"Obviously, the ACLU is losing their minds," Chad commented. "They are already suing in court." Watch the clip for more from Chad. Can't watch? Download the podcast here.

Lubbock, Texas Abolishes Abortion To Become Largest Sanctuary City For The Unborn

Voters in Lubbock, Texas, over the weekend, passed an ordinance abolishing abortion within city limits.

Texas voters make Lubbock a sanctuary city for the unborn: Largest city to outlaw abortion

Texans voted overwhelmingly to make Lubbock a "Sanctuary City for the Unborn" by outlawing abortion.

The ordinance makes Lubbock, which has a 2019 population of 229,943, the largest city to ban abortion in the country. Before Lubbock, thelargest city to pass a similar ordinance was Big Spring, Texas, which has an estimated population of 28,187, KWKT-TV reported. There are 22 smaller cities in Texas and two in Nebraska that passed "Sanctuary City for the Unborn" legislation. Lubbock is the only town with an active abortion clinic to pass the ordinance, according to KLBK-TV.

The Lubbock County Elections Office released the voting results for the Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance, which easily passed by a 62.46% to 37.54% margin, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The ordinance states, "Abortion at all times and at all stages of pregnancy is declared to be an act of murder."

"It shall be unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Lubbock, Texas," the ordinance reads. "It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly aid or abet an abortion that occurs in the City of Lubbock, Texas."

There are no exceptions for women becoming pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Procedures performed to save the life of the mother, remove a fetus whose death was the result of a miscarriage, or remove an ectopic pregnancy are permitted.

The ordinance would not be enforced by the government, but rather enables private citizens to file lawsuits.

The pro-life measure was introduced after Planned Parenthood opened a clinic in Lubbock in October that began offering abortion services on April 15, and "months after the City Council rejected the ordinance on legal grounds and warned it could tee up a costly court fight," according to the Texas Tribune.

Supporters of a measure to outlaw abortion in the city limits of Lubbock were celebrating Saturday night after results released by

"Those arguing against the local ordinance say it is unconstitutional and unenforceable," the Dallas Morning News reported. "The Lubbock City Council said it was unconstitutional when the seven members unanimously voted it down. It's on the ballot by way of a citizen-led petition. Many local officials there believe that if it passes, lawsuits will follow."

The Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas said the Lubbock clinic would remain open and follow legal restrictions.

"We are committed to expanding access to abortion and will provide abortion services when possible in Lubbock," Sarah Wheat, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, said. "We want Lubbock residents to know: Our doors are open and we will continue to advocate for our patients, no matter what."

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas issued a statement vowing to challenge the ordinance.

"The ACLU has a long history of challenging unconstitutional abortion bans and will continue to fight to protect the fundamental rights of the people of Lubbock," Drucilla Tigner, policy and advocacy strategist at the ACLU of Texas, said.

According to KWKT, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas has sued seven towns in Texas with similar pro-life ordinances, but ended up dropping the lawsuits.

In early 2020, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against seven Texas towns that passed similar ordinances outlawing abortion. The focus of the lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of two pro-choice groups in the state – was solely on the ordinances' designation of organizations assisting women in getting abortions as "criminal organizations." The ACLU later dropped the lawsuit after several cities amended their original ordinances to remove language declaring specific organizations as "criminal," while still preserving a ban on abortion.
