Man suspected of assaulting former Sen. Martha McSally arrested

Authorities have arrested a man suspected in the assault of former U.S. Sen. Martha McSally.

In a video, McSally recounted that while she was running on Wednesday a man approached her from behind, engulging her "in a bear hug, and he molested and fondled me until I fought him off."

"I ran after him, I threw my water bottle at him, and I chased him into the brush, where he was then hiding as I called 911 and waited for the police to come. I don't think they found him," she recalled in the video.

A press release from the Council Bluffs Police Department noted that 25-year-old Dominic M. Henton had been identified as a suspect.

"Utilizing surveillance video and other investigative means, detectives have identified Dominic M. HENTON of Papillion, NE as a suspect in the assault on Senator Martha McSally that occurred on 11-08-2023 in Council Bluffs, IA," the press release noted. "During the evening hours on 11-09-2023, an arrest warrant was issued charging HENTON with one count of Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse."

In a post on social media, McSally wrote, "Dominic Henton, like I screamed at you yesterday (with profanity), you will not get away with this or try to harm and violate another woman. You picked the wrong target."

The police press release noted that, "On 11-10-23 the Council Bluffs Police Department received information the suspect, Dominic M. Henton was taken into custody by the Omaha Police Department."

Former Sen. Martha McSally says she was sexually assaulted on Wednesday

Former U.S. Sen. Martha McSally disclosed that she was sexually assaulted while out running on Wednesday.

In a video posted on social media, McSally recounted that a man approached her from behind, engulfing her "in a bear hug, and he molested and fondled me until I fought him off."

"I ran after him, I threw my water bottle at him, and I chased him into the brush, where he was then hiding as I called 911 and waited for the police to come. I don't think they found him," she said.

A Council Bluffs Police Department press release notes that "McSally lost sight of the suspect prior to officers arriving. After a check of the area the suspect was not located."

In a Thursday post, McSally expressed her gratitude toward law enforcement, writing, "I very much appreciate local law enforcement and their efforts to keep the community safe and find my attacker. More on that later when appropriate."

"As I was sitting in the airport waiting to board my flight, I was tweaking my slides for my speech today. A wave of emotion came up. I didn’t push it away. Tears came. I didn't care what people around me thought. This is my journey," she noted. "The emotion was sorrow or sadness. Understandable. One of many that will arise in the days ahead. I felt it, experienced it with compassion, and let it pass. I didn’t resist it, shame it or push it down. But I didn't feed it."

McSally served as a U.S. senator from early January 2019 until early December 2020.

Buzz Aldrin shuns fellow astronaut Mark Kelly, will endorse Arizona Republican Martha McSally

Legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin endorsed Republican Sen. Martha McSally for the Senate seat in Arizona, snubbing her challenger, former astronaut Mark Kelly.

"Martha, check six - Mark? Buzz - over 100 jet hours in Arizona," Aldrin wrote on Twitter. "12 o'clock is straight ahead. 6 o'clock is behind. Fighter pilots understand what 'check six' means in FTR lingo talk. Martha, wave as you move ahead past Mark, to 12 o'clock, and you win for Arizona!"

Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who is a retired Air Force pilot, was speaking in aviation terms to McSally because she is also a former United States Air Force pilot. As commander of the 354th Fighter Squadron and an A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot, McSally was deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. McSally became the first woman in U.S. history to serve as the commander of any combat aviation squadron, to include fighters and bombers.

McSally thanked the iconic astronaut for his support.

"Absolute honor to have the support of hero astronaut Buzz Aldrin in this mission," McSally said on Twitter. "We must hold this seat, the Senate, and save the country. It's a dog fight, and as we fighter pilots say: Fight's On!"

Besides Aldrin, the celebrated Apollo 11 Lunar Module pilot and one of 12 humans who have walked on the moon, McSally has also been endorsed by three other former astronauts.

Former astronauts Tom Stafford, Charlie Duke, and Jack Lousma, shunned their fellow astronaut Mark Kelly to throw support to McSally.

"As former fighter pilots and test pilots, we know what it takes to get in the cockpit of a fighter jet for a test flight or combat: incredible determination, strength and grit," the former astronauts, who have spent about 2,400 hours in space combined, wrote earlier this month. "That's why we support Sen. Martha McSally. As the first woman in U.S. history to fly a fighter jet in combat and command a fighter squadron, she broke barriers in the Air Force and the military."

Despite losing the coveted astronaut vote, Kelly is leading in the polls. Kelly, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, is leading by 5.6 points, according to RealClearPolitics.

Earlier this month, Kelly issued an apology after his deputy press secretary referred to police officers as "worthless f***ing pigs" in a tweet.
