Video: Gun-toting jewelry store owner knows just what to do after burglar breaks in — and shocked crook makes hilarious exit

After closing up Sidrony Jewelers on Saturday, goldsmith Garrett Peddicord was settling in for "benchwork" in the back of his Omaha, Nebraska, store when something caught his eye on a security monitor, KETV-TV reported.

Turns out, a crook tossed a large rock through one of the store's front windows around 11:30 p.m. After shattered glass littered the floor, the burglar — of course dressed completely in black — entered the store through the new opening.

"That sort of unprovoked attack on what I've worked so hard to build here is pretty upsetting."

Peddicord spent about three years in the U.S. military in Afghanistan and also owns Athena Arms in Bellevue, the station said. Naturally, he knew exactly what to do.

“I typically carry a firearm on my waist, even after hours. It’s just one of those things,” he told KETV before patting his pockets and running through his mental checklist. “Keys, wallet, firearm.”

'Hey, m-effer!'

Peddicord drew his gun and headed out to where the action was, explaining to KETV that he purposely made loud steps to warn the crook somebody was coming. Peddicord added to the station that he also shouted, "Hey, m-effer!" — substituting a redacted version of the curse word we all know he used.

Suffice it to say, the burglar was quite scared, immediately throwing up his hands and almost daintily jogging to the exit before dutifully jumping through the opening in the window he busted.

"That sort of unprovoked attack on what I've worked so hard to build here is pretty upsetting," Peddicord added to the station.

Peddicord explained to KETV that the gun he carries "is the same as any of the other tools" he keeps in his workshop. “They all serve a purpose," he added to the station. "But this is the one tool that I hope to never have to use.”

Omaha police could not immediately confirm whether the burglar was caught, KETV noted.

Nebraska Proposal Could Thwart Biden’s Easiest Path To Victory — If Republicans Pass It In Time

A Nebraska bill would cut off one of Biden's easiest pathways to victory, but Republicans may not be able to pass it before the session ends.

Cops arrest female suspected of brutally beating pair of women in store while crying child with attacker begged, 'Stop it!'

Police have arrested a female suspected of brutally beating a pair of women in an Omaha, Nebraska, convenience store last month while a crying child with the attacker begged, "Stop it!"

Police told Blaze News they arrested Zarria Nichols, 26, on Friday in connection with the Feb. 16 attacks caught on surveillance video. Nichols was criminally cited for two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of criminal mischief, and one count of child abuse/neglect, police said, adding that all the charges are misdemeanors.

What's the background?

KETV-TV reported that the suspect in the attacks entered the Mega Saver at 144th and Blondo Streets with a little girl just after 5 p.m. and requested "an iPhone charger for a car."

The chargers were along the wall, the station said.

KETV said the suspect was there for a while, after which a conflict arose over buying the charger. "I'll pay for it, that's cool, but if it doesn't work in my car, can I return it?" she asked, according to the station.

There was a mix-up, and the female got upset, KETV said. "I feel like I'm being discriminated because y'all think I don't know what y'all saying, and that pisses me off," the female stated, according to the station.

KETV indicated that the suspect started swearing, which upset a couple of customers, and a yelling argument ensued — and the little girl in pink with the suspect started crying.

Soon the female suspect physically attacked one of the women, hitting her in the face at least three times.

The station said the suspect yelled profanities at the other customer. The suspect loudly asked, "You wanna get smacked, too?"

With that, the suspect slapped the retreating customer in the head from behind and then shoved her into a display, after which the victim fell to the floor as items flew off shelves.

The suspect then walked over to the little girl, grabbed her hand, and appeared to begin to the leave the store — but she made a detour over to the victim she had just knocked to the floor and physically attacked her again.

As the crying little girl screamed for the suspect to "stop it!" the suspect attempted to stomp the victim, who had raised up her foot up to protect herself — and then the suspect walked out the door with the little girl.

But it still wasn't over.

After placing the child in a car, the suspect actually came back into the store and went after the already beaten woman on the floor, who yelled out, "Oh no! Here she comes again!"

The suspect replied over and over, "What'd you say? What'd you say?" as she hit and stomped and threw objects at the victim's head before finally leaving for good.

What else?

Police told Blaze News that several tipsters identified Nichols as the suspect, and she turned herself in after police ran video of the incident. While Nichols was criminally cited, police said she wasn't booked into jail.

Police added to Blaze News that Nichols has a record consisting of various misdemeanor charges and traffic violations. Douglas County Courts told Blaze News that Nichols is scheduled for a May 3 hearing.

Suspect breaks into rectory in small Nebraska city, stabs Catholic priest to death just hours before Sunday morning mass

A Catholic priest in Nebraska died violently over the weekend after a suspect broke into the church rectory and repeatedly stabbed him.

At 5:05 a.m. on Sunday morning, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff's Office received a report of an attempted break-in at the rectory of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, a small town of fewer than 1,000 residents about 20 miles north of Omaha. According to a statement from the sheriff's office, deputies arrived on the scene in six minutes.

Despite their speed, deputies discovered a gruesome scene: Father Stephen Gutgsell — who lived at the rectory — was suffering from multiple stab wounds, and a "black male" suspect — later identified as 43-year-old Kierre L. Williams — was still inside the building. Medics rushed Fr. Gutgsell to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he soon afterward died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, Williams was arrested and taken to the Washington County jail. He has been charged with homicide and use of a weapon to commit a felony. According to jail records, he has already been denied bond.

The usual 8:30 a.m. Sunday mass at St. John the Baptist was canceled after the attack, and Deacon Tim McNeil told WOWT that the church will remain closed for the time being. The Archdiocese of Omaha also released a statement about the "invasion at the rectory of St. John the Baptist parish":

The Archdiocese of Omaha is praying for Father Stephen Gutgsell, who was assaulted during an invasion at the rectory of St. John the Baptist parish in Fort Calhoun early Sunday morning. Father Gutgsell was transported to Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, where he died of his injuries. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and there are no further details at this time. Please join Archbishop George Lucas in prayer for the repose of Father Gutgsell, for his family and for the St. John the Baptist parish community in this tragic time

At the time of his death, Fr. Gutgsell was an associate pastor with the archdiocese, serving at St. John the Baptist and the St. Francis Borgia parish in Blair, about nine miles away. Mike Fitzgerald, a parishioner at St. John the Baptist, called Gutgsell a "very holy man" who "did a lot of things for the community."

Other St. John the Baptist parishioners told news outlets that Fr. Gutgsell served the people faithfully for 11 years. However, if he did, he did so despite a shocking criminal conviction. In 2007, Gutgsell pled guilty to charges related to embezzling $127,000 from another church and was subsequently sentenced to probation and restitution.

After church leaders determined that Fr. Gutgsell had demonstrated sufficient contrition, he was assigned to a new church. Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson stated that the fatal attack on Fr. Gutgsell is likely unrelated to his prior conviction.

Gutgsell's brother, Michael — who was also once a priest with the Archdiocese of Omaha — was likewise convicted of stealing from church-related coffers. In 2021, Fr. Michael Gutgsell was arrested for allegedly stealing $155,000 from "an incapacitated retired priest who had willed his estate to the archdiocese," WOWT reported.

That Fr. Gutgsell, who had power of attorney over the unnamed disabled priest, claimed at the time that he had given the money to a homeless man. He later pled no contest to two counts of attempted theft and was sentenced last summer to two years' probation. He was also relieved of his parish duties.

Smiling woman holding pro-police sign infuriates Black Lives Matter protester who threatens, bullies her: 'Baby girl, you're not walking away anywhere!'

A smiling woman holding a pro-police sign stuck a decidedly opposing tone during a protest against cops in Omaha, Nebraska, following an officer-involved fatal shooting of a black man — and the woman was harassed and threatened for her stance.

What happened?

Multiple videos show the blonde-haired woman dressed in a light-colored "Nebraska" sweatshirt holding a sign that read, "I [heart] OPD" — presumably short for "I love the Omaha Police Department" — and she stuck out prominently among the mob of protesters dressed in black.

At one point as she weaves around the anti-cop crowd growing around her, one protester yells at her, "Baby girl, you're not walking away anywhere!" and continues hollering just feet from her face.

When the blond-haired woman dares to smile in response, her adversary loses it: "Do you think black people being murdered is f***in' funny, bitch?"

When the woman with pro-police sign moves some distance away, the angry protester actually follows her and continues yelling at her.

The accosted woman appears to push the protester's arm away from her face, and with that the protester appears to threaten and even dare her to "put your motherf***in' hands on me, bitch!"

Just as the woman with the pro-cop sign manages to get away from her adversary, it appears police used pepper spray on the unruly crowd, several of whom yell at cops for their actions and run away coughing.

Here are several sets of clips showing the confrontation. (Content warning: Language):

Two women arrested

WOWT-TV said two women were arrested during Saturday night's protest outside the Omaha Police Department headquarters — and that the arrests stemmed from assaults against a man and woman who came to the protest with pro-police signs.

Earlier on, protesters were chanting "Black Lives Matter" before arriving at police headquarters, KETV-TV said. And the man and woman arrived at the protest about 10:20 p.m. holding their signs but not obstructing the protest against cops, WOWT reported.

Five minutes later, protesters used a large cloth sign to block officers' view of the pro-police people, WOWT said, adding that when officers repositioned themselves, they saw the pro-police people being assaulted and their signs torn.

The station said officers went into the crowd and removed two women who allegedly assaulted the pro-police group as well as the pro-police individuals.

Pepper balls and pepper spray were used on the sidewalk "in front of agitators" while controlling the crowd and during suspects' arrests, WOWT reported.

One women was arrested for disorderly conduct and destruction of property, the station said, while the second woman was arrested for misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct.

It isn't clear if the arrests were related to the bullying episode of the blonde-haired woman — although one clip does show a man who appears to be with her getting his sign taken from him.
