Hillary Clinton personally disparages Clarence Thomas after Roe overturned: 'A person of grievance'

Hillary Clinton disparaged Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Tuesday, calling him a "person of grievance."

What did Clinton say?

Speaking with Gayle King on "CBS Mornings," Clinton personally attacked Thomas and claimed that he is essentially using his position on the highest court in the land to enact his personal agenda.

"He's signaling, as people often did — I went to law school with him. He's been a person of grievance for as long as I've known him. Resentment, grievance, anger," Clinton claimed.

"And he has signaled in the past to lower courts, to state legislatures, 'Find cases, pass laws, get them up [to the Supreme Court]. I may not win the first, the second, or the third time, but we're going to keep at it,'" she added.

Elevating her rhetoric even further, Clinton claimed that "women are going to die" because of Thomas' rulings.

What was the response?

In response, Clinton was accused of "playing the angry black man card."

"If this were the other way around, we’d hear endless lectures about the perils of 'tone policing a black man who grew up under segregation,'" conservative writer Charles C.W. Cooke also noted.

Meanwhile, National Review editor Philip Klein observed several problems with Clinton's statements. First, Clinton and Thomas were not in the same class at Yale Law School; Clinton graduated in 1973, while Thomas graduated in 1974. Second, Klein noted that Thomas' conservative views were not fully formed when he attended Yale.

"Among other things, the law school reference isn't plausible. Not only was she in a different graduating class from Thomas, but to the extent they overlapped, he wasn't even a conservative in law school — that was just the beginning of his ideological transition," Klein explained.

Even Justice Sonia Sotomayor's recent comments about Thomas refute Clinton's claims.

While speaking to progressive lawyers earlier this month, Sotomayor described Thomas as "a man who cares deeply about the court as an institution" and "about the people who work there."

"Justice Thomas is the one justice in the building that literally knows every employee’s name, every one of them. And not only does he know their names, he remembers their families’ names and histories," Sotomayor said of her colleague.

"He’s the first one who will go up to someone when you’re walking with him and say, ‘Is your son OK? How’s your daughter doing in college?'" she explained. "He’s the first one that, when my stepfather died, sent me flowers in Florida."

Sotomayor later said that she and Thomas "share a common understanding about people and kindness toward them," which is "why I can be friends with him and still continue our daily battle over our difference of opinions in cases."

Former Fed chair Ben Bernanke says nixing student loan debt 'would be very unfair'

Former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke said that cancelling student loan debt would be unfair.

"It would be very unfair to eliminate. Many of the people who have large amounts of student debt are professionals who are going to go on and make lots of money in their lifetime. So why would we be favoring them over somebody who didn’t go to college, for example?" Bernanke said, according to the New York Times.

President Joe Biden said last month that he is "considering dealing with some debt reduction," though he added that $50,000 debt reduction is not on the table — some Democrats have pushed for Biden to nix up to $50,000 of federal student loan debt per person.

But the concept of wiping out some or all student debt obligations remains deeply polarizing. Debt forgiveness would not benefit those who have already worked diligently to pay off their own student loans or the millions of Americans who chose not to attend college.

"I just worked my butt off to pay off my very expensive student loans a few months ago. If Biden forgives student loans, I’m going to be livid," Kassy Dillon tweeted last month, expressing a viewpoint likely shared by many others who scraped to pay off their student debt.

"Biden essentially wants blue-collar workers like truck drivers — who didn't have the luxury of going to college to get drunk for four years — to bail out a bunch of upper-middle-class kids who chose to spend tens of thousands of dollars that they didn't have on worthless gender study degrees," Donald Trump Jr. said, according to the Washington Post.

Progressive Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has responded to a question about how cancelling student debt would benefit those who have already paid off their debts: "I've said it before and I'll say it again: Not every program has to be for everybody. People with apartments pay for first time homeowner benefits. Young people pay for Medicare for our seniors. People who take public transit pay for car infrastructure," Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

"Maybe student loan forgiveness doesn't impact you. That doesn't make it bad. I am sure there are certainly other things that student loan borrowers' taxes pay for. We can do good things and reject the scarcity mindset that says doing something good for someone else comes at the cost of something for ourselves.

"An example: If a person is blessed enough to be in a position to have paid off their loans, maybe they have a home now and benefitted from first time homeowners programs that people crushed by student loans help subsidize when they aren't able to buy a home because of student debt. It all comes around. It's okay. We can support things we won't directly benefit from," the congresswoman concluded.

'Not every program has to be for everybody': AOC responds to question about how student debt forgiveness would benefit those who have already paid off their loans

In response to a question about how student debt cancellation would benefit people who have already paid off their loans, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) suggested that while individuals who have already paid down their student debt will not benefit from debt cancellation, they might benefit from another program — "It all comes around," she wrote.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again: Not every program has to be for everybody. People with apartments pay for first time homeowner benefits. Young people pay for Medicare for our seniors. People who take public transit pay for car infrastructure," Ocasio-Cortez noted.

"Maybe student loan forgiveness doesn't impact you. That doesn't make it bad. I am sure there are certainly other things that student loan borrowers' taxes pay for. Last week, the president said that he is "considering dealing with some debt reduction," though he indicated that forgiving $50,000 of debt is not on the table — many Democrats have advocated for Biden to nix up to $50,000 of federal student loan debt per borrower.

"Canceling $50,000 in debt is where you really make a dent in inequality and the racial wealth gap. $10,000 isn't," Ocasio-Cortez said, according to the Washington Post.

But a move to cancel any amount of student loan debt would likely be highly controversial because many Americans would be outraged such a policy.

"I just worked my butt off to pay off my very expensive student loans a few months ago. If Biden forgives student loans, I’m going to be livid," Kassy Dillon tweeted last week.

But while many people would likely share Dillon's sentiments on the issue, Democrats continue calling for Biden to cancel student debt.

"Canceling student loan debt for working- and middle-class Americans is the right thing to do," Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California asserted in an opinion piece. "No one should be prevented from pursuing higher education because they can’t afford the financial burden it poses. Furthermore, it makes economic sense: Relief from student debt would help young people buy homes, build wealth and otherwise grow our economy."

Watch: The best and worst jokes from the jam-packed White House Correspondents' Dinner – Biden needles Trump and DeSantis

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner took place in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night. This was the first WHCD since 2020 because of the pandemic.

The packed indoor event at the Washington Hilton was hosted by "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah, and attended by journalists, politicos, and celebrities. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden were also in attendance.

The WHCD began with a video of a pre-recorded skit with "Late Late Show" host James Corden filling in for White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

Corden is most concerned about President Biden's opinion on the budding romance between Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson – who were in attendance at the WHCD. Psaki provides Corden with talking points for his White House press conference – such as "War with Russia: bad," and "CDC: good."

Biden then took the podium and addressed his dismal approval rating by giving "a special thanks to the 42% of you who actually applauded." He then mocked journalists as the "only group of Americans with a lower approval rating than I have."

Biden noted that the 2022 White House Correspondents' Dinner was the first time a sitting U.S. president attended the event since 2016 because former President Donald Trump boycotted the WHCD during his presidency.

Biden then insinuated that the Trump presidency was a "plague."

"This is the first time a president has attended this dinner in six years," Biden said. "It's understandable, we had a horrible plague followed by two years of COVID."

The president then said that if Trump had attended the event, it would have been a "real coup" – a joke about the Jan. 6 riot, which Biden previously called an "armed insurrection" on a day that "democracy was attacked."

Biden then quipped, "I'm not here to roast the GOP. That's not my style. Besides, there's nothing I can say about the GOP that Kevin McCarthy hasn't already put on tape."

The president acknowledged the anti-Biden slogan "Let's go Brandon."

"Republicans seem to support one fellow," Biden said. "Some guy named Brandon. He's having a really good year. And I'm kind of happy for him."

Biden took aim at possible 2024 GOP presidential candidate and current Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over his handling of Disney's fight against the Parental Rights in Education law.

While flubbing Ronald Regan's iconic "tear down this wall" speech from 1987, Biden declared, "Ronald Reagan said, 'Mr. Gorbachev, tear this wall down!' Today’s Republicans say, 'Tear down Mickey Mouse's house!' And pretty soon they’ll be storming Cinderella's castle, and you can be sure of it."

Trevor Noah began his monologue by calling out the hypocrisy of press members attending a packed indoor event.

"It is my great honor to be speaking tonight at the nation's most distinguished superspreader event," Noah stated. "For real, what are we doing here? Did none of you learn anything from the Gridiron dinner? Nothing?”

Noah is referencing the corporate media dinner held last month that even MSNBC labeled as a "superspreader event." At least 72 people who attended the event tested positive for COVID-19, including Attorney General Merrick Garland and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Noah lambasted the press, "Do you read any of your own newspapers? I mean, I expect this out of Sean Hannity, but the rest of you? What are you doing here?

The "Daily Show" host highlighted the media's hypocrisy on COVID-19 precautions, "You guys spent the last two years telling everyone the importance of wearing masks and avoiding large indoor gatherings, then the second someone offers you a free dinner, you all turn into Joe Rogan.”

"I mean, Dr. Fauci dropped out," the comedian continued. "That should have been a pretty big sign."

"Fauci thought it was too dangerous to come tonight," Noah stated, before adding, "Pete Davidson thought it was okay. And we all went with Pete. Okay. Alright then."

Washington Post reporter Jada Yuan said the jam-packed room is "like a horror film."

"Literally getting trapped between tables," Yuan wrote on Twitter. "Fear of breathing near people but people are everywhere. Creeping sense that you’re the only one who know this is insane."

Noah mocked the president for the historic inflation that is causing financial ruin for Americans – which garnered laughter from the audience and Biden.

"Ever since you've come into office things are really looking up," Noah began. "Gas is up. Rent is up. Food is up. Everything."

Noah needled former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo and his cozy on-air relationship with his older brother – former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

"Some people think that this [dinner] shows that the media is too cozy with politicians, but what those people don’t understand is that you guys have integrity," Noah said. "You would never allow personal connections to affect your ability to be good journalists — isn’t that right Chris Cuomo. Where is Chris Cuomo, by the way, is he here?”

The Comedy Central talk show host skewered Jen Psaki about joining MSNBC, "When Trump was in office, your show was all about how bad he was. And now Biden is in office, your show is about how bad Trump was."

At #WHCD, Trevor Noah joked about Psacki joining MSNBC and actually took a mild shot at the left wing channel: \u201cWhen Trump was in office, your show was all about how bad he was. And now Biden is in office, your show is about how bad Trump was.\u201dpic.twitter.com/uestzYQanh

Startling video at impeachment trial shows how close rioters got to Mitt Romney, and how a Capitol officer saved him

Stunning new video presented at the Senate impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump showed the moment that a Capitol Police officer sprinted towards Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and turned him away from the advancing rioters.

The Senate heard arguments on Wednesday to convict Trump on an article of impeachment accusing him of inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

The video showed Romney walking down a Capitol hallway as officer Eugene Goodman rushes towards him and warns him to turn back to safety.

The video went viral promptly on social media:

Whoa: Eugene Goodman ran into Mitt Romney in the hallway and told him to turn around and get to safety, as the mob… https://t.co/G5RnLeew6i
— philip lewis (@philip lewis)1612992897.0

"On the first floor, just beneath him, the mob had already started to search for the Senate chamber," said Stacey Plaskett, the delegate to the House for the U.S. Virgin Islands, who narrated the events in the video for the trial.

"Officer Goodman made his way to the first floor, where he encountered the same insurrectionists we just saw breach the Capitol," she continued.

The video then turned to footage of Goodman confronting the rioters and stalling them.

"In this video we can see the rioters surge toward officer Goodman," Plaskett explains.

Goodman, an Iraqi War veteran, had already been hailed as a hero for his quick thinking in leading the rioters away from the Senate chambers. Viewers expressed even more praise for the officer after seeing that he had also saved Romney from what likely would have been a violent confrontation with rioters.

Among those were Romney, who told a reporter that he was seeking out Goodman to thank him, and said that it was incredibly emotional and distressing to see the new footage from the rioting.

Trump is unlikely to be convicted since the Constitution requires two thirds of the Senate to pass an impeachment conviction, and many Republicans have already vocalized their staunch opposition to the proceedings.

Here's a longer video of the footage at the trial:

Trump reportedly bans Pence chief of staff Marc Short from White House

President Donald Trump reportedly banned Marc Short, Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff, from the White House after Pence did not try to overturn the Electoral College results.

What's a brief history here?

Ahead of Wednesday's certification, Trump urged Pence to challenge the results, even though Pence did not have unilateral authority to do so, Business Insider reported.

Ahead of the vote, Pence issued a statement on the certification, which stated, "It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not."

When Pence refused to comply with Trump's urging, Trump blasted the vice president for not having the "courage to do what should have been done" during the largely procedural vote.

In a since-deleted tweet, the president said, "Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!"

What are the details?

On Wednesday night, Bloomberg reporter Saleha Mohsin reported that Trump banned Short from the White House.

Mohsin took to Twitter with the report, writing, "Trump banned Pence chief of staff Marc Short from the WH today, sources tell @JenniferJJacobs, me, and @josh_wingrove[.] Top WH advisers including [national security adviser Robert] O'Brien, [deputy chief of staff Chris] Liddell, and [deputy national security adviser Matt] Pottinger are thinking about resigning after today's events, we are told."

In a late-night tweet, he wrote, "CONFIRMED: Short tells me he is not allowed back on White House grounds: 'He's blaming me for advice to VP.'"

Short himself has not publicly commented on the report at the time of this reporting.

BLM and anti-fascist supporters attack multiracial family at Million MAGA March

An ugly scene developed at the Million MAGA March on Saturday when a Black Lives Matter supporter and a man who was marching with an anti-fascist group harassed a multiracial family that was out showing their support for President Donald Trump.

Thousands of Trump supporters converged on Washington, D.C., on Saturday to rally around Trump. However, tensions flared in the afternoon after hordes of counterprotesters assembled.

One of the counterprotest groups at the Trump rally was Refuse Fascism, a self-described "national movement organizing to drive out the Trump/Pence regime." The anti-fascist group had announced days earlier that they were holding a counterprotest to "overwhelm" Trump supporters.

"We are gathering non-violently," Lucha Bright of Refuse Fascism told WUSA-TV. "We are not intending to engage them. We want to overwhelm them with our numbers. If they attack us, that is not out of the realm of possibilities of what they do. But we are hoping, especially if we gather in large numbers, that we will overwhelm them with our strength."

Video from Saturday shows a group dressed in all black holding bright orange "Refuse Fascism" signs pursue a multiracial family, which included three young children. Several people in the mob get in the face of the black mother who is wearing a Trump jacket and pushing a stroller with an infant at Black Lives Matter Plaza.

A woman wearing a "Black Lives Matter" shirt gets in the face of the mother, but is separated by a man, presumably the father. Then the BLM supporter gets in the face of the father, and it sounds as if she screams at him, "You're an ugly b****!" The mother yells, "Get away!" One of the daughters is seen crying.

The father prods the woman with his flag pole to keep the woman at a distance. The woman then charges at the father to try to take away his Gadsden flag, he waves her off with his hand. Then a man dressed in all black that was walking with the anti-fascist group advances at the father and attacks him.

The father retaliates by hitting the man with the flagpole. The woman runs at the father and is also struck with the flagpole. The father gets shoved to the pavement, and he falls on top of the small child, who screams in pain. Police immediately separate the two sides.

Video taken by photojournalist Jorge Ventura shows the woman and the man had bruises on their heads.

Passenger in rapper's vehicle accused of pointing gun at person amid pro-Trump rally in Beverly Hills — and is arrested on weapon charges

A passenger in a rapper's vehicle was arrested Saturday on weapon charges after being accused of pointing a gun at a person amid a rally supporting President Donald Trump in Beverly Hills, California.

What are the details?

Beverly Hills police said they received a report just after 5 p.m. of an individual saying someone in a vehicle pointed a gun at him near South Santa Monica Boulevard and North Beverly Drive — and that he took note of the license plate. A vehicle with a matching plate was stopped after driving past the pro-Trump rally, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The vehicle's driver was rapper Offset, the Times said. Offset is the husband of famed singer Cardi B, known far and wide for the sexually charged song "WAP," which glorifies woman as prostitutes.

Offset recorded part of the interaction with police on Instagram Live.

"You just watched somebody beat my car up with a flag!" Offset tells an officer who repeatedly asks him to shut off the vehicle. But Offset insists on keeping his hands on the steering wheel and threatens to sue cops.

"Y'all know who I am?" he asks police.

Soon officers unlock the driver-side door and pull Offset out. Here's the clip. (Content warning: Language):

Whoa Offset was just arrested on IG live, like just now https://t.co/PTp4sEtAA5
— philip lewis (@philip lewis)1603585010.0

What happened next?

Offset was released after questioning, the Times said. But passenger Marcelo Almanzar, 20, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a loaded firearm in public, police said. Almanzar remained behind bars in lieu of $35,000 bail, the paper said, citing jail records.

There were multiple reports that Offset was arrested, but police denied those accusations.

Almanzar is reportedly a cousin of Cardi B, who also arrived at the scene at one point, the Times said, citing videos posted to social media.

The individual who told police a gun was pointed at him declined to press charges for that, police said.

'Aggressive Trump supporters'

An Offset publicist, Derrian Perry, told the paper in a statement that the rapper was detained "following an attack by aggressive Trump supporters."

BET, citing videos posted to Twitter, said just prior to the police stop, Offset and Cardi B. were seen making their way through a crowd where several people were waving Trump flags.

"Offset thanks his fans for their support and wishes everyone peace and safety during these trying times," the statement added, according to the Times. "He encourages everyone to get out and vote because nothing changes if nothing changes."

The paper also reported that Offset's representatives emphasized he was not the aggressor and that he complied despite having guns drawn on him and receiving conflicting directions from police.

"Offset's current focus is encouraging younger voters to get to the polls in order to keep incidents like this from continuously happening," a representative said, according to the Times.

Police estimated that more than 2,500 people attended the pro-Trump rally.

SF free speech rally canceled after organizer's tooth knocked out, police escort Trump supporters away from violent mob

A free speech rally was shut down in San Francisco on Saturday after counter-protesters became violent. The situation became so dangerous for conservatives that police needed to escort them to their cars for their own safety from an angry mob.

A "Free Speech Rally Against Twitter and Big Tech" was planned for Saturday at the Federal Building at U.N. Plaza, which is near Twitter's headquarters. The event was to protest Twitter's censorship of the New York Post's article about Hunter Biden's alleged emails regarding overseas dealings.

The rally, which was organized by Team Save America, was granted a permit by the city. There was a strong police presence in the area and barricades were set up to separate the rally-goers and the counter-protesters.

"The First Amendment ensures the right to assemble for everyone and the permit process is in place to allow for planning, to minimize disruptions and to create basic safety measures," San Francisco Rec & Parks spokesperson Tamara Aparton told SFist. "The San Francisco Police Department will be implementing all safety measures for this event."

Before the 1 p.m. free speech rally kicked off, hundreds of counter-protesters assembled in the area, including a group of black-clad individuals wielding shields. Demonstrators were holding signs that read, "Smash Fascism" and "Nazi Trump F*** Off."

The main organizer, Philip Anderson, was attacked and punched while he was walking to the stage to deliver his speech. The counter-protesters threw bottles at Anderson while he was on stage. Anderson announced the rally was canceled.

"Too bad it got canceled, that's what happens when you lose free speech, this is what our country has turned into," Anderson told the crowd.

Anderson shared a photo that shows his bloody mouth with his front tooth knocked out and another hanging loosely with the caption: "Antifa attacked me for no reason."

Anderson also posted a video from a hospital bed. "I have a question for you, Joe Biden. You said that Antifa is just an idea. This is what they did to me," Andersen said with a front tooth missing. "I'm at the hospital right now ... because of Antifa. Do you still think, after seeing this, that they're just an idea?"

Despite the free speech rally being canceled, police determined that the conservatives in the area were in danger after the riotous horde tried to knock down the barricades and threw glass bottles. Law enforcement provided a police escort to the conservatives, many of them wearing "Make America Great Again" hats.

San Francisco police said counter-protesters threw "plastic bottles filled with unknown liquid," metal cans and eggs at rally participants.

The San Francisco Police Department said six people were injured, including three officers who suffered non-life-threatening injuries when they were assaulted with pepper spray and caustic chemicals. One officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the department said.

One Trump supporter was seen being taken away in an ambulance with a leg injury.

No arrests were made, the department said.
